Applying the Circumplex Model to the Examination of Job Stress

    Get PDF
This study investigated job stress as a dynamic phenomenon and the possibility of job stress spin. The concept of spin is typically associated with affect and examined using the Circumplex Model of Affect. In an effort to better assess job stress, the circumplex model was adapted to reflect the dynamic nature of job stress. One preexisting data set is utilized in this study. In the sample, burnout was collected once using the Oldenberg 15-item Burnout Inventory; experiences of job stress were also collected once using the Stanton measure of work stress. Two items, pumped and excited, were added in the measure of work stress scale. The measure of work stress items was used to calculate job stress spin. A multilevel hierarchical regression was conducted with daily mean job stress and daily job stress spin serving as predictors, controlling for positive and negative affect, trait anger, and job control. Burnout served as the outcome in both steps of the regression. It was hypothesized that daily job stress spin will be associated with incremental variance in associated outcomes, such as burnout, over daily mean job stress. The hypothesized research questions were supported. Daily job stress spin was a significant predictor of burnout and did predict significant variance over daily mean job stress

Updated Composite Materials Handbook-17 (CMH-17) Volume 5 - Ceramic Matrix Composites

    Get PDF
A wide range of issues must be addressed during the process of certifying CMC (ceramic matrix composite) components for use in commercial aircraft. The Composite Materials Handbook-17, Volume 5, Revision A on ceramic matrix composites has just been revised to help support FAA certification of CMCs for elevated temperature applications. The handbook supports the development and use of CMCs through publishing and maintaining proven, reliable engineering information and standards that have been thoroughly reviewed. Volume 5 contains detailed sections describing CMC materials/processing, design/analysis guidelines, testing procedures, and data analysis and acceptance. A review of the content of this latest revision will be presented along with a description of how CMH-17, Volume 5 could be used by companies applying for certification with the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and others in the future

Behavioral determinants of successful early melanoma detection

BACKGROUND. Reduced melanoma mortality should result from an improved understanding of modifiable factors related to early detection. The authors of this report surveyed newly diagnosed patients to identify differences in prediagnosis behavioral and medical care factors associated with thinner versus thicker melanoma. METHODS. In total, 566 adults with invasive melanoma completed questionnaires within 3 months of diagnosis on demographics, health care access, skin self‐examination (SSE), and physician skin examination (PSE) practices in the year before diagnosis. SSE was measured by us e of a melanoma picture aid and routine examination of some/all body sites versus none. Patient‐reported partial or full‐body PSE also was assessed. Melanoma thickness was dichotomized at 1 mm. RESULTS. Patient ranged in age from 18 years to 99 years, and 61% were men. The median tumor thickness was 1.25 mm, and 321 tumors (57%) were >1 mm thick. Thinner tumors (≤1 mm) were associated with age ≤60 years ( P = .0002), women ( P = .0127), higher education level ( P = .0122), and physician discovery ( P ≤ .0001). Patients who used a melanoma picture aid and performed routine SSE were more likely to have thinner tumors than those who did not (odds ratio [OR], 2.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.48‐4.80). Full‐body PSE was associated with thinner tumors (OR, 2.51; 95% CI, 1.62‐3.87), largely because of the effect of PSE in men aged >60 years (OR, 4.09 95% CI, 1.88‐8.89). CONCLUSIONS. SSE and PSE were identified as complementary early detection strategies, particularly in men aged >60 years, in whom both partial and full‐body PSE were associated with thinner tumors. Given the high rates of physician access, PSE may be a more practical approach for successful early detection in this subgroup with highest mortality. Cancer 2012. © 2011 American Cancer Society. Physician skin examination (PSE) in the year before melanoma diagnosis is strongly associated with thinner tumors in men aged >60 years. Improving rates of PSE in this high‐risk group is likely to result in earlier detection of melanoma.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/92369/1/26707_ftp.pd

Dostoevsky: The Philosophy of the Hideout

    No full text
This article reads Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground with regard to the idea of the people from hideouts, formulated in Józef Tischner’s philosophical writing and inspired by Antoni Kępiński’s Psychopatie. It fi rst discusses Dostoevsky’s book in the context of Lev Shestov’s philosophy of tragedy so as to juxtapose this approach with Kępiński’s psychiatric and Tischner’s philosophical theses. In particular, Tischner’s concept of hope is interpreted in opposition to the pessimism that informs Shestov’s ideas, the difference exemplifi ed by references to the behaviour of Dostoevsky’s protagonist. </jats:p

On the usefulness of Józef Tischner’s "Historia filozofii po góralsku" (The History of Philosophy, Highlander Style) as a source of knowledge of the Podhale dialect and culture

    No full text
The aim of this article is to show the extent to which Józef Tischner’s Historia filozofii po góralsku (The History of Philosophy, Highlander Style) is a cognitively attractive source of learning about Podhale’s dialect and culture and the possible threats or difficulties that may be associated with using the work to this end. The author begins his discussions by considering such features of the work under examination as its apocryphal and fairy-tale-like nature and proceeds to showing it on three different planes. From the linguistic perspective, he notes the dialectal features characteristic of the work in terms of phonetics, inflection, syntax, word formation, lexis, and phraseology. In terms of cultural studies, he devotes his attention to the customs and traditions of the Podhale region as well as to the regional cuisine, which found their places in individual stories. In some of the considerations focused to a greater extent on philosophy, the author indicates the characteristic features of the highlander worldview, which Tischner captures in his work, and conducts the word-formation and semantic analysis of selected neologisms and neosemantisms, which were used by the author of the stories to enrich the highlanders’ speech with philosophical terminology
