Raman studies of suspensions and solutions of singlewall carbon nanotubes
Raman spectroscopy is used to probe the structure and electronic properties
of nanotubes dispersed in a liquid phase. We show that the radial breathing
modes are upshifted in suspensions due to the molecular pressure of the
solvent. On the other hand, we directly probe charge transfer in solutions of
nanotube polyelectrolytes and its reversibility after oxydation in air
Multi-spectroscopic investigation of the structure of single-wall carbon nanotubes
We present a multispectroscopic structural study of various nanotube samples
with different tube diameters. We determine for each sample the mean bundle and
tube diameter as well as the tube diameter distribution. The possibility to
work on SWNT of various structural characteristics opens new opportunities to

Nanotube-based systems for broadband optical limiting: towards an operational system
Nanotube-based systems are good candidates for optical limiting against
broadband laser pulses. We explore new routes to improve their limiting
performances. We show that the diameter of the nanotubes is a key factor to
control the performances. On the other hand, we demonstrate that chemically
modified nanotubes can be mixed with organic chromophores, leading to high
performance composite limiting systems which are particularly efficient in the
nanosecond regime due to the cumulative effects of nonlinear scattering and
multiphoton absorption
Scaling-up co-trimoxazole prophylaxis in HIV-exposed and HIV-infected children in high HIV-prevalence countries.
Co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) is a widely available antibiotic that substantially reduces HIV-related morbidity and mortality in both adults and children. Prophylaxis with co-trimoxazole is a recommended intervention of proven benefit that could serve not only as an initial step towards improving paediatric care in young children with limited access to antiretroviral treatment, but also as an important complement to antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings. Despite co-trimoxazole's known clinical benefits, the potential operational benefits, and favourable recommendations by WHO, UNAIDS, and UNICEF, its routine use in developing countries--particularly sub-Saharan Africa--has remained limited. Out of an estimated 4 million children in need of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis (HIV-exposed and HIV-infected), only 4% are currently receiving this intervention. We discuss some of the major barriers preventing the scale-up of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis for children in countries with a high prevalence of HIV and propose specific actions required to tackle these challenges
Demographic characteristics and opportunistic diseases associated with attrition during preparation for antiretroviral therapy in primary health centres in Kibera, Kenya.
Using routine data from HIV-positive adult patients eligible for antiretroviral therapy (ART), we report on routinely collected demographic characteristics and opportunistic diseases associated with pre-ART attrition (deaths and loss to follow-up). Among 2471 ART eligible patients, enrolled between January 2005 and November 2008, 446 (18%) were lost to attrition pre-ART. Adjusted risk factors significantly associated with pre-ART attrition included age <35 years (Odds Ratio, OR 1.4, 95% Confidence Interval, CI 1.1-1.8), severe malnutrition (OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.1-2.0), active pulmonary tuberculosis (OR 1.6, 95% CI 1.1-2.4), severe bacterial infections including severe bacterial pneumonia (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.2-2.8) and prolonged unexplained fever (>1 month), (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.3-5.2). This study highlights a number of clinical markers associated with pre-ART attrition that could serve as 'pointers' or screening tools to identify patients who merit fast-tracking onto ART and/or closer clinical attention and follow-up
Combination of carbon nanotubes and two-photon absorbers for broadband optical limiting

We demonstrate that the association of non-linear scattering from single-wall
carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and multiphoton absorption (MPA) from organic
chromophores is a promising approach to extend performances of optical limiters
over broad spectral and temporal ranges. Such composites display high linear
transmission and good neutral colorimetry and are particularly efficient in the

Influence of structure on the optical limiting properties of nanotubes
We investigate the role of carbon nanotubes structure on their optical
limiting properties. Samples of different and well-characterized structural
features are studied by optical limiting and pump-probe experiments. The
influence of the diameter's size on the nano-object is demonstrated. Indeed,
both nucleation and growth of gas bubbles are expected to be sensitive to
diameter
On the diffraction pattern of C60 peapods
We present detailed calculations of the diffraction pattern of a powder of
bundles of C peapods. The influence of all pertinent structural
parameters of the bundles on the diffraction diagram is discussed, which should
lead to a better interpretation of X-ray and neutron diffraction diagrams. We
illustrate our formalism for X-ray scattering experiments performed on peapod
samples synthesized from 2 different technics, which present different
structural parameters. We propose and test different criteria to solve the

Quantum states and specific heat of low-density He gas adsorbed within the carbon nanotube interstitial channels: Band structure effects and potential dependence
We calculate the energy-band structure of a He atom trapped within the
interstitial channel between close-packed nanotubes within a bundle and its
influence on the specific heat of the adsorbed gas. A robust prediction of our
calculations is that the contribution of the low-density adsorbed gas to the
specific heat of the nanotube material shows pronounced nonmonotonic variations
with temperature. These variations are shown to be closely related to the band
gaps in the adsorbate density of states
Vibrations of a chain of Xe atoms in a groove of carbon nanotube bundle
We present a lattice dynamics study of the vibrations of a linear chain of Xe
adsorbates in groove positions of a bundle of carbon nanotubes. The
characteristic phonon frequencies are calculated and the adsorbate polarization
vectors discussed. Comparison of the present results with the ones previously
published shows that the adsorbate vibrations cannot be treated as completely
decoupled from the vibrations of carbon nanotubes and that a significant
hybridization between the adsorbate and the tube modes occurs for phonons of
