Differentiation and Dynamics of Competitiveness Impacts from the EU ETS
We summarise the main factors that differentiate impacts of the EU ETS on profitability and market share. By examining and sampling a range of sectors, we present some simple metrics and indicators to help judge the nature of potential impacts. We also consider briefly the mitigation response to these impacts by sectors, and how they may evolve over time. The broad conclusion confirms the aggregate findings presented in the existing literature - more participating sectors are likely to profit under the current ETS structure out to 2012 at the cost of a modest loss of market share, but this may not hold for individual companies and regions. The period 2008-12 can assist technology investments and diversification, providing the continuation and basic principles of the EU ETS post-2012 is quickly defined and incentives are in place for sectors to pursue this
Improved Bounds for Drawing Trees on Fixed Points with L-shaped Edges
Let be an -node tree of maximum degree 4, and let be a set of
points in the plane with no two points on the same horizontal or vertical line.
It is an open question whether always has a planar drawing on such that
each edge is drawn as an orthogonal path with one bend (an "L-shaped" edge). By
giving new methods for drawing trees, we improve the bounds on the size of the
point set for which such drawings are possible to: for
maximum degree 4 trees; for maximum degree 3 (binary) trees; and
for perfect binary trees.
Drawing ordered trees with L-shaped edges is harder---we give an example that
cannot be done and a bound of points for L-shaped drawings of
ordered caterpillars, which contrasts with the known linear bound for unordered

Matrix Product Operators, Matrix Product States, and ab initio Density Matrix Renormalization Group algorithms
Current descriptions of the ab initio DMRG algorithm use two superficially
different languages: an older language of the renormalization group and
renormalized operators, and a more recent language of matrix product states and
matrix product operators. The same algorithm can appear dramatically different
when written in the two different vocabularies. In this work, we carefully
describe the translation between the two languages in several contexts. First,
we describe how to efficiently implement the ab-initio DMRG sweep using a
matrix product operator based code, and the equivalence to the original
renormalized operator implementation. Next we describe how to implement the
general matrix product operator/matrix product state algebra within a pure
renormalized operator-based DMRG code. Finally, we discuss two improvements of
the ab initio DMRG sweep algorithm motivated by matrix product operator
language: Hamiltonian compression, and a sum over operators representation that
allows for perfect computational parallelism. The connections and
correspondences described here serve to link the future developments with the
past, and are important in the efficient implementation of continuing advances
in ab initio DMRG and related algorithms.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figure
Trust as a mediator in the relationship between childhood sexual abuse and IL-6 level in adulthood
Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been shown to predict the coupling of depression and inflammation in adulthood. Trust within intimate relationships, a core element in marital relations, has been shown to predict positive physical and mental health outcomes, but the mediating role of trust in partners in the association between CSA and inflammation in adulthood requires further study. The present study aimed to examine the impact of CSA on inflammatory biomarkers (IL-6 and IL-1β) in adults with depression and the mediating role of trust. A cross-sectional survey data set of adults presenting with mood and sleep disturbance was used in the analysis. CSA demonstrated a significant negative correlation with IL-6 level (r = -0.28, p<0. 01) in adults with clinically significant depression, while trust showed a significant positive correlation with IL-6 level (r = 0.36, p < .01). Sobel test and bootstrapping revealed a significant mediating role for trust between CSA and IL-6 level. CSA and trust in partners were revealed to have significant associations with IL-6 level in adulthood. Counterintuitively, the directions of association were not those expected. Trust played a mediating role between CSA and adulthood levels of IL-6. Plausible explanations for these counterintuitive findings are discussed
Clonal expansion within pneumococcal serotype 6C after use of seven-valent vaccine
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes invasive infections, primarily at the extremes of life. A seven-valent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) is used to protect against invasive pneumococcal disease in children. Within three years of PCV7 introduction, we observed a fourfold increase in serotype 6C carriage, predominantly due to a single clone. We determined the whole-genome sequences of nineteen S. pneumoniae serotype 6C isolates, from both carriage (n = 15) and disease (n = 4) states, to investigate the emergence of serotype 6C in our population, focusing on a single multi-locus sequence type (MLST) clonal complex 395 (CC395). A phylogenetic network was constructed to identify different lineages, followed by analysis of variability in gene sets and sequences. Serotype 6C isolates from this single geographical site fell into four broad phylogenetically distinct lineages. Variation was seen in the 6C capsular locus and in sequences of genes encoding surface proteins. The largest clonal complex was characterised by the presence of lantibiotic synthesis locus. In our population, the 6C capsular locus has been introduced into multiple lineages by independent capsular switching events. However, rapid clonal expansion has occurred within a single MLST clonal complex. A type IV modification-dependent restriction enzyme SauUSI from Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus USA300
A gene encoding a putative DNA helicase from Staphylococcus aureus USA300 was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The protein was purified to over 90% purity by chromatography. The purified enzyme, SauUSI, predominantly cleaves modified DNA containing 5mC and 5-hydroxymethylcytosine. Cleavage of 5mC-modified plasmids indicated that the sites S5mCNGS (S = C or G) are preferentially digested. The endonuclease activity requires the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or dATP whereas the non-hydrolyzable γ-S-ATP does not support activity. SauUSI activity was inhibited by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. It is most active in Mg++ buffers. No companion methylase gene was found near the SauUSI restriction gene. The absence of a cognate methylase and cleavage of modified DNA indicate that SauUSI belongs to type IV restriction endonucleases, a group that includes EcoK McrBC and Mrr. SauUSI belongs to a family of highly similar homologs found in other sequenced S. aureus, S. epidermidis and S. carnosus genomes. More distant SauUSI orthologs can be found in over 150 sequenced bacterial/archaea genomes. Metal-Poor Stars Observed with the Magellan Telescope. III. New Extremely and Ultra Metal-Poor Stars from SDSS/SEGUE and Insights on the Formation of Ultra Metal-Poor Stars
We report the discovery of one extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H]<-3) and one
ultra metal-poor (UMP; [Fe/H]<-4) star selected from the SDSS/SEGUE survey.
These stars were identified as EMP candidates based on their medium-resolution
(R~2,000) spectra, and were followed-up with high-resolution (R~35,000)
spectroscopy with the Magellan-Clay Telescope. Their derived chemical
abundances exhibit good agreement with those of stars with similar
metallicities. We also provide new insights on the formation of the UMP stars,
based on comparison with a new set of theoretical models of supernovae
nucleosynthesis. The models were matched with 20 UMP stars found in the
literature, together with one of the program stars (SDSS J1204+1201), with
[Fe/H]=-4.34. From fitting their abundances, we find that the supernovae
progenitors, for stars where carbon and nitrogen are measured, had masses
ranging from 20.5 M_sun to 28 M_sun and explosion energies from 0.3 to
0.9x10^51 erg. These results are highly sensitive to the carbon and nitrogen
abundance determinations, which is one of the main drivers for future
high-resolution follow-up of UMP candidates. In addition, we are able to
reproduce the different CNO abundance patterns found in UMP stars with a single

Broad activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system by Parkin is critical for mitophagy
Parkin, an E3 ubiquitin ligase implicated in Parkinson's disease, promotes degradation of dysfunctional mitochondria by autophagy. Using proteomic and cellular approaches, we show that upon translocation to mitochondria, Parkin activates the ubiquitin–proteasome system (UPS) for widespread degradation of outer membrane proteins. This is evidenced by an increase in K48-linked polyubiquitin on mitochondria, recruitment of the 26S proteasome and rapid degradation of multiple outer membrane proteins. The degradation of proteins by the UPS occurs independently of the autophagy pathway, and inhibition of the 26S proteasome completely abrogates Parkin-mediated mitophagy in HeLa, SH-SY5Y and mouse cells. Although the mitofusins Mfn1 and Mfn2 are rapid degradation targets of Parkin, we find that degradation of additional targets is essential for mitophagy. These results indicate that remodeling of the mitochondrial outer membrane proteome is important for mitophagy, and reveal a causal link between the UPS and autophagy, the major pathways for degradation of intracellular substrates
The Chemical Compositions of Very Metal-Poor Stars HD 122563 and HD 140283; A View From the Infrared
From high resolution (R = 45,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N > 400) spectra
gathered with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) in the H and
K photometric bands, we have derived elemental abundances of two bright,
well-known metal-poor halo stars: the red giant HD 122563 and the subgiant HD
140283. Since these stars have metallicities approaching [Fe/H] = -3, their
absorption features are generally very weak. Neutral-species lines of Mg, Si, S
and Ca are detectable, as well as those of the light odd-Z elements Na and Al.
The derived IR-based abundances agree with those obtained from
optical-wavelength spectra. For Mg and Si the abundances from the infrared
transitions are improvements to those derived from shorter wavelength data.
Many useful OH and CO lines can be detected in the IGRINS HD 122563 spectrum,
from which derived O and C abundances are consistent to those obtained from the
traditional [O I] and CH features. IGRINS high resolutions H- and K-band
spectroscopy offers promising ways to determine more reliable abundances for
additional metal-poor stars whose optical features are either not detectable,
