Characterization of a Silicon strip detector for radiotherapy use

    Get PDF
The present work aims at the rst characterization of a silicon strip detector to be used for quality assurance of intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatments. After a rst feasibility study, a new prototype has been designed and built in the framework of a collaboration between the University of Seville, the National Accelerator Centre (CNA Centro Nacional de Aceleradores, Seville, Spain), the Virgen Macarena University Hospital and the private company Micron Semiconductor Ltd. It is composed of two single-sided silicon strip detectors, mounted in a back-to-back conguration with the strips arranged along two orthogonal directions, and separated by a Kapton layer. This detecting unit can be housed in two dierent phantoms, a slab and a cylindrical one: in the former, the detector is placed orthogonally to the beam axis, in the latter, it is placed vertically, with the aim of obtaining on-line, measurement-based dose maps in the axial plane of a hypothetical patient. This work discusses the rst characterization of the new detecting unit, housed in the slab phantom and irradiated with a clinical linear accelerator in the 6 MV photon mode. Linearity, reproducibility, minimum dose threshold and leakage current have been analysed; a Geant4 simulation of the dosimetry system has also been carried out to gain further insight on the physical processes at play. The detector has then been calibrated and used to reproduce routine quality assurance hospital measurements; the comparison between the two shows remarkable agreement.ope

    New Perspectives in Nanodosimetry

The biological effectiveness of ionizing radiation is closely related to the number and spatial distribution of its initial interactions within critical subcellular structures of nanometric size, such as the DNA. The detailed analysis of this interaction pattern is the main aim of nanodosimetry, which is the study of the stochastics of radiation interactions at the nanometre scale. At the Legnaro National Laboratories of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics, the Startrack nanodosimetric counter is operative, which can measure the ionization yield in sensitive volumes of nanometric size. From these data, new track structure descriptors can be defined, which are measurable and directly correlated to given biological effects. This thesis aims at the development of new techniques and methodologies to be applied to the nanodosimetric analysis, in order to optimize the correlation between the physical description of track structure given by nanodosimetry and biological effects at cellular level, as a first step towards its application to radiation therapy and radiation protection

Evolution of Scientific Production on Health Literacy and Health Education—A Bibliometric Analysis

    Get PDF
In the last few years, there has been an emphasis on the importance of health literacy (HL) and health education (HE) as basic tools to empower individuals and the community. The increasing interest in HL and HE has been observed through the evolution of publications and the nature of the main trends in the last few years. Knowing how HL and HE have evolved in scientific publications can help us to identify trends and set work priorities in this scope. Based on this, a bibliometric analysis (from 2000 to 2021) was conducted in two phases: first, an analysis was performed on the publications included in the Web of Science (WOS); second, a more specific analysis was conducted on the Core Collection from WOS. The data were analyzed with two software programs, the and Bibliometrix package for RStudio, and VOSviewer to analyze number of publications, citations, authors, collaborations, keywords trends, keywords evolutions and clusters of related terms. A total of 1799 articles were found in the first phase, and 727 in the second. The results from both analyses showed that the publications increased unequally until 2020, and considerably decreased in 2021; however, in spite of this, the number of citations remained constant. Likewise, five word clusters related with HL and HE were identified. D. Nutbeam stood out as the most prolific author on the subject, the USA as the country with the most publications, and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health as having the most articles on the subject. This analysis may be a useful and helpful tool for future studies on the subject. This study has been co-financed under the RETSASO EFA 341/19 Project with FEDER funds. In addition, it has been subsidized by the DOTS University Chair (Chair for the Development of Healthy and Sustainable Organizations and Territoires), approved by agreement No. 193/2017 of the Governing Council of the University of Lleida on 19 July 2017

Satisfaction and experience with colorectal cancer screening: a systematic review of validated patient reported outcome measures

    Get PDF
Background: Patient satisfaction or experience with colorectal cancer screening can determine adherence to screening programs. An evaluation of validated patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) for measuring experience or satisfaction with colorectal cancer screening does not exist. Our objective was to identify and critically appraise validated questionnaires for measuring patient satisfaction or experience with colorectal cancer screening. Asymptomatic inflammatory bowel disease; Colorectal cancer; Population screeningEnfermedad inflamatoria intestinal asintomática; Cribado poblacional; Cáncer colorrectalMalaltia inflamatòria intestinal asimptomàtica; Cribratge poblacional; Càncer colorectalIntroduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is usually diagnosed when symptomatic. Prognosis and evolution of preclinical IBD is largely unknown. However, colorectal cancer screening programs (CRCSP) detect a subset of patients with IBD with no symptoms. The aim of this study was to describe the natural history of asymptomatic IBD diagnosed through CRCSP. Methods: An observational, longitudinal, and retrospective study was performed at 22 centers in Catalonia between January 2010 and December 2019 including patients with asymptomatic IBD detected in the CRCSP. Demographic data and IBD characteristics, evolution, and treatment were recorded. Descriptive statistics and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used for the analysis. Data were given separately for IBD, Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and IBD unclassified (IBDU). Results: One hundred eighty-eight patients were included: 103 UC (54.8%), 60 CD (31.9%), and 25 IBDU (13.3%). Sixty-six (35.1%) were women, and the average age was 59.9 ± 5.9 years. Sixty-four patients (34.0%) developed symptoms after a median follow-up of 35.6 months. Diarrhea was the most frequent symptom for CD and IBDU (25.4% and 11.5%, respectively) and blood in stools for UC (21.4%). The median time to first symptom was 11.6 months. Treatment was prescribed in 135 patients (72.2%); mesalazine was the most prescribed drug (123 patients; 65.4%). Thirteen patients (6.9%) required biological treatment. None underwent surgery. Discussion: Around one-third of asymptomatic patients with IBD developed symptoms after a medium follow-up of 3 years. Only 6.9% required biological treatment, and none required surgery. Overall, prognosis of asymptomatic IBD seems better. This study received a 6,000€ grant for initiation to research from the Societat Catalana de Digestologia
