    Get PDF
Cystic hygroma (lymphangioma) is often a benign congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that occurs as a result of sequestration or obstruction of lymphatic vessels. Theselesions are usually discovered in infant or children younger than two years of age.Occurrence in adults is uncommon, and fewer than 100 cases of adult lymphangioma have been reported in the literature (1,2) . The objectives of this case report are to present theclinical history and surgical findings, review of literature and the unique problems encountered in the surgical management of this particular patient

    Authenticated teleportation with one-sided trust

We introduce a protocol for authenticated teleportation, which can be proven secure even when the receiver does not trust their measurement devices, and is experimentally accessible. We use the technique of self-testing from the device-independent approach to quantum information, where we can characterise quantum states and measurements from the exhibited classical correlations alone. First, we derive self-testing bounds for the Bell state and Pauli σX,σZ\sigma_X, \sigma_Z measurements, that are robust enough to be implemented in the lab. Then, we use these to determine a lower bound on the fidelity of an untested entangled state to be used for teleportation. Finally, we apply our results to propose an experimentally feasible protocol for one-sided device-independent authenticated teleportation. This can be interpreted as a first practical authentication of a quantum channel, with additional one-sided device-independence.Comment: published versio

Management of Tuberculosis - The Need to Enforce Proper Treatment Guidelines among Private Practitioners in India

    Get PDF
Tuberculosis continues to be a daunting challenge for our healthcare system. Even after fifteen years of the much publicised Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme that envisages directly observed short course chemotherapy (DOTS), TB continues to spread and drug resistant strains, MDR and XDR, are also increasingly reported. More than 50% of TB patients seeking private health care, but the level of awareness regarding treatment of TB among private practitioners appears to be poor. All this call for an urgent revamp of TB control strategy in India

A hypothesize-and-verify framework for Text Recognition using Deep Recurrent Neural Networks

Deep LSTM is an ideal candidate for text recognition. However text recognition involves some initial image processing steps like segmentation of lines and words which can induce error to the recognition system. Without segmentation, learning very long range context is difficult and becomes computationally intractable. Therefore, alternative soft decisions are needed at the pre-processing level. This paper proposes a hybrid text recognizer using a deep recurrent neural network with multiple layers of abstraction and long range context along with a language model to verify the performance of the deep neural network. In this paper we construct a multi-hypotheses tree architecture with candidate segments of line sequences from different segmentation algorithms at its different branches. The deep neural network is trained on perfectly segmented data and tests each of the candidate segments, generating unicode sequences. In the verification step, these unicode sequences are validated using a sub-string match with the language model and best first search is used to find the best possible combination of alternative hypothesis from the tree structure. Thus the verification framework using language models eliminates wrong segmentation outputs and filters recognition errors

bit.ly/malicious: Deep Dive into Short URL based e-Crime Detection

Existence of spam URLs over emails and Online Social Media (OSM) has become a massive e-crime. To counter the dissemination of long complex URLs in emails and character limit imposed on various OSM (like Twitter), the concept of URL shortening has gained a lot of traction. URL shorteners take as input a long URL and output a short URL with the same landing page (as in the long URL) in return. With their immense popularity over time, URL shorteners have become a prime target for the attackers giving them an advantage to conceal malicious content. Bitly, a leading service among all shortening services is being exploited heavily to carry out phishing attacks, work-from-home scams, pornographic content propagation, etc. This imposes additional performance pressure on Bitly and other URL shorteners to be able to detect and take a timely action against the illegitimate content. In this study, we analyzed a dataset of 763,160 short URLs marked suspicious by Bitly in the month of October 2013. Our results reveal that Bitly is not using its claimed spam detection services very effectively. We also show how a suspicious Bitly account goes unnoticed despite of a prolonged recurrent illegitimate activity. Bitly displays a warning page on identification of suspicious links, but we observed this approach to be weak in controlling the overall propagation of spam. We also identified some short URL based features and coupled them with two domain specific features to classify a Bitly URL as malicious or benign and achieved an accuracy of 86.41%. The feature set identified can be generalized to other URL shortening services as well. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first large scale study to highlight the issues with the implementation of Bitly's spam detection policies and proposing suitable countermeasures.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1405.151

Concerns of Groundwater Depletion and Irrigation Efficiency in Punjab Agriculture: A Micro-Level Study

    Get PDF
The present study, conducted during 2005-06, in two districts, viz. Amritsar and Faridkot of Punjab, (former having pre-dominantly tubewell-irrigated area and the latter having canal + tubewell irrigation facilities) has assessed the extent of water depletion and has measured irrigation efficiency at the farm level. Due to profitability and availability of water at shallow depths during 1970s, paddy and wheat (two of the high water-consuming crops) replaced other crops like maize, groundnut and pulses in the entire state. The area under these two crops increased from 7.22 per cent to 32.92 per cent for paddy and from 37.12 per cent to 43.53 per cent for wheat, from TE 1965 to TE 2005. Consequently, the problem of groundwater depletion has become severe in the Amritsar district, with a fall of 77cm/ annum in watertable. In the district of Faridkot, this fall has been of 33cm/annuum. The technical efficiency of irrigation on farms estimated through Data Envelopment Analysis, has indicated the mean irrigation efficiency of 57 per cent and 65 per cent in paddy production and 61 per cent and 68 per cent in wheat production, in tubewell-irrigated and canal+tubewell irrigated farms, respectively. It has clearly indicated that there is potential to improve irrigation efficiency by 39 per cent and 32 per cent, respectively in the sample farms. To sustain production system in the state, there is an urgent need to (i) do away with the rice-wheat cropping system in the regions where groundwater depletion is very severe, (ii) evolve regulation for use of groundwater and conjunctive use of surface water, and (iii) disseminate improved agronomic practices for increasing use-efficiency of water and other inputs.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Optical observations of the fast declining type Ib supernova iPTF13bvn

We present optical UBVRI photometry and medium resolution spectroscopy of the type Ib supernova iPTF13bvn, spanning a phase of \sim 13-13\,d to +71+71\,d with respect to BB-band maximum. The post maximum decline rates indicate a fast decline with Δm15(B)=1.82\Delta m_{15}(B) = 1.82. Correcting for a galactic extinction E(BV)MW=0.045E(B-V){\rm_{MW}}=0.045 and host galaxy extinction of E(BV)host=0.17E(B-V){\rm_{host}}=0.17, the absolute VV-band magnitude peaks at MV=17.23±0.20_V=-17.23\, \pm \,0.20. The bolometric light curve indicates that 0.09\sim 0.09 M_{\odot} of 56^{56}Ni was synthesized in the explosion. The earliest spectrum (13-13d) shows the presence of He~{\sc i} 5876 \AA\ feature at a velocity of \sim15000 km s1^{-1}, which falls rapidly by the time the SN approaches the epoch of B-band maximum. The photospheric velocity near maximum light, as indicated by the Fe~{\sc ii} 5169~\AA\ feature, is 9000\sim 9000 km s1^{-1}. The estimate for the 56^{56}Ni mass, together with the estimates for the ejected mass (MejM_{\rm{ej}}) and kinetic energy of the explosion (EkE_{\rm{k}}) indicate that iPTF13bvn is a low luminosity type Ib supernova, with a lower than average ejected mass and kinetic energy. Our results suggest that the progenitor of iPTF13bvn is inconsistent with a single Wolf-Rayet star.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages, 12 figure
