Optimal witnessing of the quantum Fisher information with few measurements

We show how to verify the metrological usefulness of quantum states based on the expectation values of an arbitrarily chosen set of observables. In particular, we estimate the quantum Fisher information as a figure of merit of metrological usefulness. Our approach gives a tight lower bound on the quantum Fisher information for the given incomplete information. We apply our method to the results of various multiparticle quantum states prepared in experiments with photons and trapped ions, as well as to spin-squeezed states and Dicke states realized in cold gases. Our approach can be used for detecting and quantifying metrologically useful entanglement in very large systems, based on a few operator expectation values. We also gain new insights into the difference between metrological useful multipartite entanglement and entanglement in general.Comment: 14 pages including 7 figures, revtex4.1, v2:typos corrected, published versio

Spin squeezing and entanglement for arbitrary spin

A complete set of generalized spin-squeezing inequalities is derived for an ensemble of particles with an arbitrary spin. Our conditions are formulated with the first and second moments of the collective angular momentum coordinates. A method for mapping the spin-squeezing inequalities for spin-1/2 particles to entanglement conditions for spin-j particles is also presented. We apply our mapping to obtain a generalization of the original spin-squeezing inequality to higher spins. We show that, for large particle numbers, a spin-squeezing parameter for entanglement detection based on one of our inequalities is strictly stronger than the original spin-squeezing parameter defined in [A. Sorensen et al., Nature 409, 63 (2001)]. We present a coordinate system independent form of our inequalities that contains, besides the correlation and covariance tensors of the collective angular momentum operators, the nematic tensor appearing in the theory of spin nematics. Finally, we discuss how to measure the quantities appearing in our inequalities in experiments.Comment: 18 pages including 3 figures, revtex4; v2: references added, typos corrected; v3: typos corrected, published versio

On the ongoing multiple blowout in NGC 604

Several facts regarding the structure of NGC 604 are examined here. The three main cavities, produced by the mechanical energy from massive stars which in NGC 604 are spread over a volume of 106^6 pc3^3, are shown here to be undergoing blowout into the halo of M33. High resolution long slit spectroscopy is used to track the impact from massive stars while HST archive data is used to display the asymmetry of the nebula. NGC 604 is found to be a collection of photoionized filaments and sections of shells in direct contact with the thermalized matter ejected by massive stars. The multiple blowout events presently drain the energy injected by massive stars and thus the densest photoionized gas is found almost at rest and is expected to suffer a slow evolution.Comment: 15 pages (11 text), 4 figures. Entanglement and extreme spin squeezing of unpolarized states

We present criteria to detect the depth of entanglement in macroscopic ensembles of spin-j particles using the variance and second moments of the collective spin components. The class of states detected goes beyond traditional spin-squeezed states by including Dicke states and other unpolarized states. The criteria derived are easy to evaluate numerically even for systems of very many particles and outperform past approaches, especially in practical situations where noise is present. We also derive analytic lower bounds based on the linearization of our criteria, which make it possible to define spin-squeezing parameters for Dicke states. In addition, we obtain spin squeezing parameters also from the condition derived in [A. S. Sorensen and K. Molmer, Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 4431 (2001)]. We also extend our results to systems with fluctuating number of particles.Comment: 18 pages including 4 figures; v2: published versio

Young Super Star Clusters in the Starburst of M82: The Catalogue

Recent results from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have resolved starbursts as collections of compact young stellar clusters. Here we present a photometric catalogue of the young stellar clusters in the nuclear starburst of M82, observed with the HST WFPC2 in Halpha (F656N) and in four optical broad-band filters. We identify 197 young super stellar clusters. The compactness and high density of the sources led us to develop specific techniques to measure their sizes. Strong extinction lanes divide the starburst into five different zones and we provide a catalogue of young super star clusters for each of these. In the catalogue we include relative coordinates, radii, fluxes, luminosities, masses, equivalent widths, extinctions, and other parameters. Extinction values have been derived from the broad-band images. The radii range between 3 and 9 pc, with a mean value of 5.7 +/- 1.4pc, and a stellar mass between 10e4 and 10e6 Mo. The inferred masses and mean separation, comparable to the size of super star clusters, together with their high volume density, provides strong evidence for the key ingredients postulated by Tenorio et al. (2003) as required for the development of a supergalactic wind.Comment: 45 pages, 5 figures, 12 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ. Added Erratu

Tremendous forces are radically reshaping the world of work and workforce diversity is steadily growing. If effective diversity management can only be achieved by means of the use of appropriate human resources strategies, HRM need to change his role. This chapter intends to explore such new trends and new practices on HRM, analyze which of them can be employed and which are more appropriate for an optimal management of workforce diversity and to obtain a competitive advantage for companies in the global economy

The young stellar population of NGC 4214 as observed with HST. I. Data and methods

We present the data and methods that we have used to perform a detailed UV-optical study of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214 using multifilter HST/WFPC2+STIS photometry. We explain the process followed to obtain high-quality photometry and astrometry of the stellar and cluster populations of this galaxy. We describe the procedure used to transform magnitudes and colors into physical parameters using spectral energy distributions. The data show the existence of both young and old stellar populations that can be resolved at the distance of NGC 4214 (2.94 Mpc) and we perform a general description of those populations.Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures, and 8 table

[EN] This paper analyses the perception the people working at the organizations of ner Group in the Basque Country have of the cultural features of the new style of relationships (ner), created by Koldo Saratxaga during his successful running of Irizar Group. The ner, an innovation in culture and management, an answer to the challenges placed by the Technologies of Information and Communication and the Knowledge Society, is based on persons, basic pillars of the organizations; persons who work in self-managed teams with responsibility, confidence and freedom to reach customers satisfaction. The commitment and integration of persons with the organization they work for are strengthened by implementing internal solidarity based on the reduction of the wage differences, the profit sharing and the employment security in case of crisis, using then the relocations between organizations of ner Group. The developed empirical research, once designed an specific questionnaire, allows us to conclude that the majority of the people declare a high level of Involvement, consider the ner an organizational and management tool which makes directing activity to reach customer satisfaction feasible, they perceive the existing Consistency and voice that this makes possible relationships based on mutual trust and they judge positively the existing Adaptability, portrayed by commitment to the internal solidarity and to society and community
