A Qualia-based description of specialized knowledge units in the lexical-constructional model
EcoLexicon és una base de dades de coneixement sobre medi
ambient basada en la idea de marcs semàntics. La informació
que conté està estructurada coherentment dins de l'esdeveniment
prototípic de domini, l'esdeveniment mediambiental
(EE). S'hi ha definit un inventari tancat de relacions, tant a
nivell intercategorial com intracategorial, que connecten els
conceptes entre si. Això és la base per a una ontologia formal
d'aquest àmbit que servirà per a finalitats computacionals, fer
cerques o extreure informació automàticament. Les premisses
teòriques de la terminologia basada en marcs, el lexicó generatiu
i la gramàtica de construccions lèxiques, proporcionen
un formalisme estricte que ens permet fer un pas endavant cap

The information it contains is coherently structured
within a prototypical domain event, the Environmental Event
(EE). At an intra- and intercategorial level, a closed inventory
of relations has been defined that relates concepts to each
other as well as to the EE. It will be the basis for a formal
domain ontology which will serve computational purposes,
enhance searches and allow for automatic information extraction.
Theoretical premises from Frame-Based Terminology,
the Generative Lexicon and the Lexical-Constructional Model
provide a streamlined formalism that brings us one step closer
to a formal ontology
Cultural Context and Multimodal Knowledge Representation: Seeing the Forest for the Trees
Context, especially cultural context, has long been neglected in Terminology. Even though recent approaches have acknowledged the relevance of culture in specialized communication, the development of culture in Terminology is still marginal. Culture is also underrepresented in terminological resources, which may respond to the complexity of reflecting the cultural component in the description of terms and concepts. However, conceptualization is dynamic and changes from culture to culture and, for that reason, an in-depth study on how the nature of human perception and cultural cognition influences the representation of concept systems and terms in specialized knowledge contexts is needed. Furthermore, to facilitate knowledge acquisition, contextual and conceptual information should go together with multimodal information, as the combination of textual and visual material improves understanding. This study integrates different types of context (i.e., semantic relations, frames, and culture) to describe a methodology for the selection and representation of multimodal information for culturally bound concepts such as forest in terminological knowledge bases, based on the theoretical premises of Frame-Based Terminology. Different ideas of forest in European countries were analyzed and represented by means of culturally adapted images, which are best suited to disseminate knowledge and foreground the role of culture in specialized communication.Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain (MICINN)

Presente y futuro de la base de conocimiento terminológica EcoLexicon
EcoLexicon is a multilingual terminological knowledge base on environmental science developed since 2003 by the LexiCon research group at the University of Granada (Spain). It constitutes the practical application of the Frame-based Terminology theory. This article describes how EcoLexicon works and presents its latest developments, including its new corpus and semantic word sketch grammar in English, a revised and improved phraseology module, a flexible terminological definition approach, and conceptual representation through images.EcoLexicon es una base de conocimiento terminológica multilingüe sobre ciencias medioambientales desarrollada desde 2003 por el grupo de investigación LexiCon de la Universidad de Granada (España) y constituye la aplicación práctica de la teoría de la terminología basada en marcos. Remarkable spatial variation in the seroprevalence of Coxiella burnetii after a large Q fever epidemic.
Prior to the 2007-2010 Q fever epidemic in the Netherlands, the seroprevalence of antibodies against Coxiella burnetii in the general population was 1.5%, which is low compared to other countries. We aimed to determine the seroprevalence after the Q fever epidemic among people living in the affected area, compare the seroprevalence with the incidence of Q fever notifications during the 2007-2010 Q fever epidemic, and to identify farm exposures associated with having antibodies against C. burnetii
Pollution in Environmental Law: Comparative Corpus Analysis
Abstract
Environmental Law has been mostly ignored in terminological knowledge bases (TKBs) on the environment. EcoLexicon, a multilingual and multimodal TKB on the environment, has recently begun to include information on this transversal domain. In this study, comparative corpus analysis is carried out in Sketch Engine (Kilgarriff et al. 2014) to analyse the differences between Environmental Law and Environmental Science from the theoretical and methodological perspective of Frame-Based Terminology (Faber 2012, 2015). More specifically, the focus is on multidimensionality: how concepts change their behaviour according to the context in which they participate. The results show that different facets of the Pollution frame are highlighted and its participants change in the Environmental Law domain as compared to Environmental Science. Finally, the complex multidimensional nature of the Pollution frame is represented in EcoLexicon with a combination of graphical and linguistic expression in conceptual networks and definitions.</jats:p

The use of verbs in research articles
The aim of the study described in this article is to examine the lexical characteristics of medical research articles in English. The article describes the results obtained from the analysis of a corpus of medical texts in which the use of verbs is studied in the different sections of the medical research article. After selecting a corpus of 30 texts and tagging them with a POS Tagger, concordances of verbs were obtained. The verbs were then classified according to their meaning in lexical domains. Results show that the lexical domains are distributed differently in each section of the article, reinforcing the rhetorical functions of each section. A proposal is also made for using these results in a more practical manner, for example to enrich an electronic manual, with information that could assist professionals and translators with the writing and translation of medical research articles.</jats:p
Framing terminology in legal translation
Abstract
Legal language and its translation are considerably more complex than scientific and technical translation because the legal object is a text that performs an action. For this reason it is not only necessary to consider the legal terminology but also the structure of the text itself as well as the verbs used and their performative act. In this paper, we explore how the analysis of terminological meaning in legal texts can be addressed from the perspective of Frame-Based Terminology (FBT), a cognitive approach to domain-specific language, which directly links specialized knowledge representation to cognitive linguistics and cognitive semantics. In a case study on international agreements in the context of environmental law, we analyze the argument structure of verbs as well as the conceptual categories of their semantic arguments providing insights into the semantic profile of this text type. The representation of the verb class and its semantic arguments can be considered a type of interlingua that could be used as a basis for translation.</jats:p
