Heat flux evaluation in high temperature ring-on-ring contacts

A comprehensive methodology to investigate heat flux in a ring-on-ring tribometer is presented. Thermal fluxes under high contact pressures and temperature differences were evaluated through an experimental campaign and by a numerical procedure of inverse analysis applied to surface temperature measurements. An approximation of a two-dimensional time-dependent analytical solution for the temperature distribution was first developed and subsequently adapted to mimic the specific testing configuration characteristics; the problem was finally simplified to enable further inverse analysis. Experiments were performed using an innovative high temperature ring-on-ring tribometer. The evaluated contact heat transfer rates were reported as a function of normal load and temperature difference between the discs under steady-state conditions; the results reported here show that, in the present test configuration, the temperature difference has stronger influence than the applied load in terms of heat transfer induced by contact

Museum of the sea and ecological identity. Rethinking museums in Milazzo

Siso is the skeleton of a sperm whale that hangs from the vaulted ceiling of a deconsecrated church in the castle of Milazzo, a coastal city in the North-East of Sicily. Siso was stranded below the cliffs along the Milazzo peninsula in 2017 and its skeleton was rescued and reconstructed by a small group of volunteers in the deconsecrated church that would soon become the site of MUMA, Museo del Mare (https://www.mumamilazzo.com/site/). Siso's huge body with its tail helplessly entangled in one of the many illegal fishing nets abandoned in the sea shack, tugged on the local population's conscience and changed their vision of museums, tourism, and ecology. Starting as a private endeavour, MUMA has now established various forms of collaboration with local institutions and offers experiences to visitors that include, but go beyond, digitalisation, virtual and augmented reality. In particular, MUMA identifies as an inspirational and educational site where visitors, children in particular, participate, experience, and undertake a Dantesque path towards a novel awareness of the need to protect the sea and its creatures. MUMA is now a partner of the Chersoneso D'Oro ecomuseum, a community-based heritage project that supports sustainable development and offers tourists with experiential opportunities. The chapter concludes with some reflections on how grassroots realities such as ecomuseums can shape the perception people have of the place where they live or they visit. Such participatory realities encourage further cooperation and foster the improvement and appreciation of the natural environment and historical heritage

Dinamica di applicazioni olomorfe tangenti all'identita'

MODELING PROFESSIONAL FEMININITY THROUGH U.S. MEDIA CULTURE, 1963-2015

From 1963 to 2015, the introduction of women into the U.S. workplace has dramatically altered cultures of work. In this dissertation, I explore the relationship between women and work not through “work life balance,” but through an analysis of various models of professional femininity through U.S. media culture. I track these figures in terms of what I call, "the professionalization of femininity," considering forms of the professionalization of domesticity in entrepreneurial homemaking and home economics, and the professionalization of feminism in the form of the feminist professor, the feminist activist, and the career woman. I am interested in exploring degraded sites of feminist theory (the heterosexual cis-gender white woman, the domestic, the mainstream, etc.) precisely because these sites offer insight into liberal feminism’s internal contradictions. This is then, both a study of the contradictions implicit within femininity (between domesticity and feminism), and a study of historical change. My archive includes various materials from the women's liberation movement as well as the work and lives of three particular women, each of whom has a particular relation to professional femininity through U.S. media culture. Considering professional femininity since the publication of The Feminine Mystique and working across rhetoric, media studies, history, and feminist/gender studies, this project considers the figures under discussion as models and also as modeling forms of professional femininity at multiple levels and in relation to various scenes (of knowledge production, genre, media culture, etc). Individual chapters discuss Joan Didion’s literary and journalistic work in relation to the 1960s, Ree Drummond’s work as a blogger in relation to the invention of the internet and the emergence of new forms of domesticity, and Kelly Reichardt’s filmmaking in relation to realist aesthetics. The story I tell traces these contradictions, as I move from Joan Didion's depictions of professional femininity in relation to women’s liberation, to Ree Drummond's affirmatively positive professionalized domesticity in relation to the history of home economics, and finally, to Kelly Reichardt's America, where a crisis involving professional femininity is being represented through a kind of cinematic realism that has echoes in early (and forgotten) feminist film theory.Doctor of Philosoph

A case study of renaissance wall paintings in Granada (Spain): historical–artistic analysis, materials characterization, and state of conservation

    Get PDF
The research carried out on the wall paintings of Hernán Pérez del Pulgar’s Palace chapel in Granada (Spain) was aimed at determining its historical–artistic, stylistic, technical, and compositional aspects. For this, a 16th century frieze and an 18th century pendentive were studied. The mineralogical, chemical, and textural characterization of the constituent materials and the study of the state of conservation of the paintings have helped to determine the pictorial technique used, identify the nature of the salts present in the paintings, and other pathologies including a dormant fungal attack. To this end, optical microscopy (OM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy with microanalysis (FESEM-EDS), and micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS) were used. The information obtained helps clarify important aspects of the painting technique used, laying a basis to ensure effective and suitable conservation and restoration measures on the paintings that will ensure their durability over time.AERIMPACT | Ref. Oxygen Stability in the New [FeFe]-Hydrogenase from Clostridium beijerinckii SM10 (CbA5H)

© 2016 American Chemical Society. The newly isolated Clostridium beijerinckii [FeFe]-hydrogenase CbA5H was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy coupled to enzymatic activity assays. This showed for the first time that in this enzyme the oxygen-sensitive active state Hox can be simply and reversibly converted to the oxygen-stable inactive Hinact state. This suggests that oxygen sensitivity is not an intrinsic feature of the catalytic center of [FeFe]-hydrogenases (H-cluster), opening new challenging perspectives on the oxygen sensitivity mechanism as well as new possibilities for exploitation in industrial applications
