Predicting the long time dynamic heterogeneity in a supercooled liquid on the basis of short time heterogeneities
We report that the local Debye-Waller factor in a simulated 2D glass-forming
mixture exhibits significant spatial heterogeneities and that these short time
fluctuations provide an excellent predictor of the spatial distribution of the
long time dynamic propensities [Phys.Rev.Lett. 93, 135701 (2004)]. In contrast,
the potential energy per particle of the inherent structure does not correlate
well with the spatially distributed dynamics
Visual Speech Enhancement
When video is shot in noisy environment, the voice of a speaker seen in the
video can be enhanced using the visible mouth movements, reducing background
noise. While most existing methods use audio-only inputs, improved performance
is obtained with our visual speech enhancement, based on an audio-visual neural
network. We include in the training data videos to which we added the voice of
the target speaker as background noise. Since the audio input is not sufficient
to separate the voice of a speaker from his own voice, the trained model better
exploits the visual input and generalizes well to different noise types. The
proposed model outperforms prior audio visual methods on two public lipreading
datasets. It is also the first to be demonstrated on a dataset not designed for

Localised soft modes and the supercooled liquid's irreversible passage through its configuration space
Using computer simulations, we show that the localized low frequency normal
modes of a configuration in a supercooled liquid are strongly correlated with
the irreversible structural reorganization of the particles within that
configuration. Establishing this correlation constitutes the identification of
the aspect of a configuration that determines the heterogeneity of the
subsequent motion. We demonstrate that the spatial distribution of the
summation over the soft local modes can persist in spite of particle
reorganization that produces significant changes in individual modes. Along
with spatial localization, the persistent influence of soft modes in particle
relaxation results in anisotropy in the displacements of mobile particles over

“Kind and Grateful”: A Context-Sensitive Smartphone App Utilizing Inspirational Content to Promote Gratitude
Background
Previous research has shown that gratitude positively influences psychological wellbeing and physical health. Grateful people are reported to feel more optimistic and happy, to better mitigate aversive experiences, and to have stronger interpersonal bonds. Gratitude interventions have been shown to result in improved sleep, more frequent exercise and stronger cardiovascular and immune systems. These findings call for the development of technologies that would inspire gratitude. This paper presents a novel system designed toward this end.
Methods
We leverage pervasive technologies to naturally embed inspiration to express gratitude in everyday life. Novel to this work, mobile sensor data is utilized to infer optimal moments for stimulating contextually relevant thankfulness and appreciation. Sporadic mood measurements are inventively obtained through the smartphone lock screen, investigating their interplay with grateful expressions. Both momentary thankful emotion and dispositional gratitude are measured. To evaluate our system, we ran two rounds of randomized control trials (RCT), including a pilot study (N = 15, 2 weeks) and a main study (N = 27, 5 weeks). Studies’ participants were provided with a newly developed smartphone app through which they were asked to express gratitude; the app displayed inspirational content to only the intervention group, while measuring contextual cues for all users.
Results
In both rounds of the RCT, the intervention was associated with improved thankful behavior. Significant increase was observed in multiple facets of practicing gratitude in the intervention groups. The average frequency of practicing thankfulness increased by more than 120 %, comparing the baseline weeks with the intervention weeks of the main study. In contrast, the control group of the same study exhibited a decrease of 90 % in the frequency of thankful expressions. In the course of the study’s 5 weeks, increases in dispositional gratitude and in psychological wellbeing were also apparent. Analyzing the relation between mood and gratitude expressions, our data suggest that practicing gratitude increases the probability of going up in terms of emotional valence and down in terms of emotional arousal. The influences of inspirational content and contextual cues on promoting thankful behavior were also analyzed: We present data suggesting that the more successful times for eliciting expressions of gratitude tend to be shortly after a social experience, shortly after location change, and shortly after physical activity.
Conclusions
The results support our intervention as an impactful method to promote grateful affect and behavior. Moreover, they provide insights into design and evaluation of general behavioral intervention technologies.Robert Wood Johnson FoundationMIT Media Lab Consortiu
CoExpNetViz: comparative co-expression networks construction and visualization tool
Motivation: Comparative transcriptomics is a common approach in functional gene discovery efforts. It allows for finding conserved co-expression patterns between orthologous genes in closely related plant species, suggesting that these genes potentially share similar function and regulation. Several efficient co-expression-based tools have been commonly used in plant research but most of these pipelines are limited to data from model systems, which greatly limit their utility. Moreover, in addition, none of the existing pipelines allow plant researchers to make use of their own unpublished gene expression data for performing a comparative co-expression analysis and generate multi-species co-expression networks.
Results: We introduce CoExpNetViz, a computational tool that uses a set of query or "bait" genes as an input (chosen by the user) and a minimum of one pre-processed gene expression dataset. The CoExpNetViz algorithm proceeds in three main steps; (i) for every bait gene submitted, co-expression values are calculated using mutual information and Pearson correlation coefficients, (ii) non bait (or target) genes are grouped based on cross-species orthology, and (iii) output files are generated and results can be visualized as network graphs in Cytoscape.

Decision-making on intra-household allocation of bed nets in Uganda: do households prioritize the most vulnerable members?
Abstract
Background
Access to insecticide-treated bed nets has increased substantially in recent years, but ownership and use remain well below 100% in many malaria endemic areas. Understanding decision-making around net allocation in households with too few nets is essential to ensuring protection of the most vulnerable. This study explores household net allocation preferences and practices across four districts in Uganda.
Methods
Data collection consisted of eight focus group discussions, twelve in-depth interviews, and a structured questionnaire to inventory 107 sleeping spaces in 28 households.
Results
In focus group discussions and in-depth interviews, participants almost unanimously stated that pregnant women, infants, and young children should be prioritized when allocating nets. However, sleeping space surveys reveal that heads of household sometimes receive priority over children less than five years of age when households have too few nets to cover all members.
Conclusions
When asked directly, most net owners highlight the importance of allocating nets to the most biologically vulnerable household members. This is consistent with malaria behaviour change and health education messages.
