Measurement of the water-Cherenkov detector response to inclined muons using an RPC hodoscope
The Pierre Auger Observatory operates a hybrid detector composed of a Fluorescence Detector and a Surface Detector array. Water-Cherenkov detectors (WCD) are the building blocks of the array and as such play a key role in the detection of secondary particles at the ground. A good knowledge of the detector response is of paramount importance to lower systematic uncertain- ties and thus to increase the capability of the experiment in determining the muon content of the extensive air showers with a higher precision. In this work we report on a detailed study of the detector response to single muons as a function of their trajectories in the WCD. A dedicated Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) hodoscope was built and installed around one of the detectors. The hodoscope is formed by two stand-alone low gas flux segmented RPC detectors with the test water-Cherenkov detector placed in between. The segmentation of the RPC detectors is of the order of 10 cm. The hodoscope is used to trigger and select single muon events in different ge- ometries. The signal recorded in the water-Cherenkov detector and performance estimators were studied as a function of the trajectories of the muons and compared with a dedicated simulation. An agreement at the percent level was found, showing that the simulation correctly describes the tank response.Peer Reviewe
Notas sobre a qualidade da produção leiteira: um estudo de caso sobre a COOPAVEL, (PR)
The new scene of economic globalization and commercial liberalism has instigated the increase of corporative competition. For the cooperative or any other company to survive in the context of tough competition, one of the core issues to be concerned is quality. In order to accompany the present changes, the vision of cooperatives has been facing important modifications. An example of is this is Coopavel (Brazilian cooperative situated in the southern State of Paraná), which has launched a differentiated system of raw milk payment to assure the quality of its received milk, and, consequently, the improvement of its products’ quality. This paper proposes to present a case about Coopavel, analyzing its quality improvement program of milk production.Cooperativism, Quality, Coopavel, Milk, Livestock Production/Industries,
Automatic speaker recognition with Multi-resolution Gaussian Mixture models (MR-GMMs)
Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) are the most widely used technique for voice modeling in automatic speaker recognition systems. In this paper, we introduce a variation of the traditional GMM approach that uses models with variable complexity (resolution). Termed Multi-resolution GMMs (MR-GMMs); this new approach yields more than a 50% reduction in the computational costs associated with proper speaker identification, as compared to the traditional GMM approach. We also explore the noise robustness of the new method by investigating MR-GMM performance under noisy audio conditions using a series of practical identification tests
Noise-robust speaker recognition using reduced Multiconditional Gaussian Mixture models
Multiconditional Modeling is widely used to create noise-robust speaker recognition systems. However, the approach is computationally intensive. An alternative is to optimize the training condition set in order to achieve maximum noise robustness while using the smallest possible number of noise conditions during training. This paper establishes the optimal conditions for a noise-robust training model by considering audio material at different sampling rates and with different coding methods. Our results demonstrate that using approximately four training noise conditions is sufficient to guarantee robust models in the 60 dB to 10 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) range
Control de la tuberculosis: percepción de los enfermos sobre orientación a la comunidad y participación comunitaria
To evaluate, from the patient’s perspective, actions of orientation for the community and community participation carried out in tuberculosis control in health services in Ribeirão Preto - SP. This was an evaluative quantitative exploratory study which used part of the Primary Care Assessment Tool, adapted and validated for tuberculosis care, applied through interview, with 100 patients. Indicators of the instrument and analysis of variance were used. The realization of social partnerships for delivery of the sputum pot together with the community, the delivery of the sputum pot to the community by professionals, and the participation of the community to discuss the problem of tuberculosis were identified, 5%, 6% and 5%, respectively. The health services with fewer patients in treatment showed the best indicators. The actions of social partnerships, searching for respiratory symptomatics in the community and community participation in tuberculosis control are poorly incorporated by health services.O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar, sob a percepção dos doentes, ações de orientação para a comunidade e participação comunitária, realizadas no controle da tuberculose em serviços de saúde de Ribeirão Preto, SP. Autonomous RPCs for a Cosmic Ray ground array
We report on the behaviour of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) developed for
muon detection in ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) experiments. The RPCs
were developed for the MARTA project and were tested on field conditions. These
RPCs cover an area of and are instrumented with 64
pickup electrodes providing a segmentation better than cm. By shielding
the detector units with enough slant mass to absorb the electromagnetic
component in the air showers, a clean measurement of the muon content is
allowed, a concept to be implemented in a next generation of UHECR experiments.
The operation of a ground array detector poses challenging demands, as the RPC
must operate remotely under extreme environmental conditions, with limited
budgets for power and minimal maintenance. The RPC, DAQ, High Voltage and
monitoring systems are enclosed in an aluminium-sealed case, providing a
compact and robust unit suited for outdoor environments, which can be easily
deployed and connected. The RPCs developed at LIP-Coimbra are able to operate
using a very low gas flux, which allows running them for few years with a small
gas reservoir. Several prototypes have already been built and tested both in
the laboratory and outdoors. We report on the most recent tests done in the
field that show that the developed RPCs have operated in a stable way for more
than 2 years in field conditions.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of the 35th International Cosmic Ray
Conference (ICRC2017), Busan, South Korea. Presented by R. Concei\c{c}\~{a}o.
