Spatially Resolving Ocean Color and Sediment Dispersion in River Plumes, Coastal Systems, and Continental Shelf Waters
Satellite remote sensing of ocean color in dynamic coastal, inland, and nearshorewaters is impeded by high variability in optical constituents, demands specialized atmospheric correction, and is limited by instrument sensitivity. To accurately detect dispersion of bio-optical properties, remote sensors require ample signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to sense small variations in ocean color without saturating over bright pixels, an atmospheric correction that can accommodate significantwater-leaving radiance in the near infrared (NIR), and spatial and temporal resolution that coincides with the scales of variability in the environment. Several current and historic space-borne sensors have met these requirements with success in the open ocean, but are not optimized for highly red-reflective and heterogeneous waters such as those found near river outflows or in the presence of sediment resuspension. Here we apply analytical approaches for determining optimal spatial resolution, dominant spatial scales of variability ("patches"), and proportions of patch variability that can be resolved from four river plumes around the world between 2008 and 2011. An offshore region in the Sargasso Sea is analyzed for comparison. A method is presented for processing Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua and Terra imagery including cloud detection, stray lightmasking, faulty detector avoidance, and dynamic aerosol correction using short-wave- and near-infrared wavebands in extremely turbid regions which pose distinct optical and technical challenges. Results showthat a pixel size of approx. 520 mor smaller is generally required to resolve spatial heterogeneity in ocean color and total suspended materials in river plumes. Optimal pixel size increases with distance from shore to approx. 630 m in nearshore regions, approx 750 m on the continental shelf, and approx. 1350 m in the open ocean. Greater than 90% of the optical variability within plume regions is resolvable with 500 m resolution, and small, but significant, differences were found between peak and nadir river flow periods in terms of optimal resolution and resolvable proportion of variability
Tailoring the frictional properties of granular media
A method of modifying the roughness of soda-lime glass spheres is presented,
with the purpose of tuning inter-particle friction. The effect of chemical
etching on the surface topography and the bulk frictional properties of grains
is systematically investigated. The surface roughness of the grains is measured
using white light interferometry and characterised by the lateral and vertical
roughness length scales. The underwater angle of repose is measured to
characterise the bulk frictional behaviour. We observe that the co-efficient of
friction depends on the vertical roughness length scale. We also demonstrate a

Remote Sensing of CDOM, CDOM Spectral Slope, and Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Global Ocean
A Global Ocean Carbon Algorithm Database (GOCAD) has been developed from over 500 oceanographic field campaigns conducted worldwide over the past 30 years including in situ reflectances and coincident satellite imagery, multi- and hyperspectral Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) absorption coefficients from 245715 nm, CDOM spectral slopes in eight visible and ultraviolet wavebands, dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC, respectively), and inherent optical, physical, and biogeochemical properties. From field optical and radiometric data and satellite measurements, several semi-analytical, empirical, and machine learning algorithms for retrieving global DOC, CDOM, and CDOM slope were developed, optimized for global retrieval, and validated. Global climatologies of satellite-retrieved CDOM absorption coefficient and spectral slope based on the most robust of these algorithms lag seasonal patterns of phytoplankton biomass belying Case 1 assumptions, and track terrestrial runoff on ocean basin scales. Variability in satellite retrievals of CDOM absorption and spectral slope anomalies are tightly coupled to changes in atmospheric and oceanographic conditions associated with El Nio Southern Oscillation (ENSO), strongly covary with the multivariate ENSO index in a large region of the tropical Pacific, and provide insights into the potential evolution and feedbacks related to sea surface dissolved carbon in a warming climate. Further validation of the DOC algorithm developed here is warranted to better characterize its limitations, particularly in mid-ocean gyres and the southern oceans
Algorithm Development and Validation of CDOM Properties for Estuarine and Continental Shelf Waters Along the Northeastern U.S. Coast
An extensive set of field measurements have been collected throughout the continental margin of the northeastern U.S. from 2004 to 2011 to develop and validate ocean color satellite algorithms for the retrieval of the absorption coefficient of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (aCDOM) and CDOM spectral slopes for the 275:295 nm and 300:600 nm spectral range (S275:295 and S300:600). Remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) measurements computed from in-water radiometry profiles along with aCDOM() data are applied to develop several types of algorithms for the SeaWiFS and MODIS-Aqua ocean color satellite sensors, which involve least squares linear regression of aCDOM() with (1) Rrs band ratios, (2) quasi-analytical algorithm-based (QAA based) products of total absorption coefficients, (3) multiple Rrs bands within a multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis, and (4) diffuse attenuation coefficient (Kd). The relative error (mean absolute percent difference; MAPD) for the MLR retrievals of aCDOM(275), aCDOM(355), aCDOM(380), aCDOM(412) and aCDOM(443) for our study region range from 20.4-23.9 for MODIS-Aqua and 27.3-30 for SeaWiFS. Because of the narrower range of CDOM spectral slope values, the MAPD for the MLR S275:295 and QAA-based S300:600 algorithms are much lower ranging from 9.9 and 8.3 for SeaWiFS, respectively, and 8.7 and 6.3 for MODIS, respectively. Seasonal and spatial MODIS-Aqua and SeaWiFS distributions of aCDOM, S275:295 and S300:600 processed with these algorithms are consistent with field measurements and the processes that impact CDOM levels along the continental shelf of the northeastern U.S. Several satellite data processing factors correlate with higher uncertainty in satellite retrievals of aCDOM, S275:295 and S300:600 within the coastal ocean, including solar zenith angle, sensor viewing angle, and atmospheric products applied for atmospheric corrections. Algorithms that include ultraviolet Rrs bands provide a better fit to field measurements than algorithms without the ultraviolet Rrs bands. This suggests that satellite sensors with ultraviolet capability could provide better retrievals of CDOM. Because of the strong correlations between CDOM parameters and DOM constituents in the coastal ocean, satellite observations of CDOM parameters can be applied to study the distributions, sources and sinks of DOM, which are relevant for understanding the carbon cycle, modeling the Earth system, and to discern how the Earth is changing
Barriers, Roles, and Information Source Preferences for Utilizing Agricultural Science Projects Among Utah 4-H Extension Professionals
Agriscience is the growing study of biotechnology, business, and economics within the agriculture industry. Through 4-H, youth can experience hands on learning through different program areas. The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers, roles, and how Utah 4-H personnel preferred to learn about new programs. The study showed time and available volunteers were a barrier for 4-H Extension personnel to implement Agriscience projects. Other results included internet and workshops as the top choices for training programs. The Extension personnel agreed it was their job to involve and educate youth. Yet, need training in how to integrate Robotics; Biotechnology; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and Agriscience into their existing program areas

ANALISIS PUTUSAN HAKIM TERHADAP ANAK SEBAGAI KURIR NARKOTIKA (STUDI KASUS PENGADILAN NEGERI MATARAM NOMOR 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr)
Abstrak
Penyalahgunaan narkotika pada anak terjadi pada putusan Pengadilan Negeri Mataram Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr. Anak bertindak sebagai pengguna, perantara jual beli narkotika Golongan I, dan pelaku penggelapan. Hakim menjatuhkan pidana berupa pembinaan dalam Lembaga BRSAMPK “Paramita” Mataram. Penelitian ini mengkaji dan menganalisis pertimbangan hakim dalam putusan Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr apa telah sesuai dengan ancaman pidana Pasal 114 Ayat (1) UU Narkotika dan apakah telah sesuai dengan kesalahan terdakwa. Tujuan yang hendak dicapai adalah untuk mengetahui kesesuaian pertimbangan hakim dalam putusan Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr dengan ancaman pidana pada Pasal 114 Ayat (1) UU Narkotika dan untuk mengetahui kesesuaian pertimbangan hakim dalam memutus Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr dengan kesalahan terdakwa. Hasil penelitian ini adalah Putusan Hakim Pengadilan Negeri Mataram dengan Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr belum sesuai dengan ancaman pidana yang terdapat dalam Pasal 114 Ayat (1) UU Narkotika. Dalam Putusan Hakim Pengadilan Negeri Mataram dengan Perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr, anak pelaku bertindak sebagai menjadi perantara jual beli narkotika Golongan I, pemakai dan pelaku tindak pidana penggelapan, dikategorikan dalam concursus idealis. Maka kasus yang diputus oleh Hakim Pengadilan Negeri Mataram perkara Nomor 26/Pid.Sus.Anak/2022/PN.Mtr sudah sesuai dengan Pasal 81 UU SPPA terutama jika mendasarkan pada ayat (5) nya.
