The Role of the Radial Orbit Instability in Dark Matter Halo Formation and Structure
For a decade, N-body simulations have revealed a nearly universal dark matter
density profile, which appears to be robust to changes in the overall density
of the universe and the underlying power spectrum. Despite its universality,
the physical origin of this profile has not yet been well understood.
Semi--analytic models by Barnes et al. (2005) have suggested that the density
structure of dark matter halos is determined by the onset of the radial orbit
instability (ROI). We have tested this hypothesis using N-body simulations of
collapsing dark matter halos with a variety of initial conditions. For
dynamically cold initial conditions, the resulting halo structures are triaxial
in shape, due to the mild aspect of the instability. We examine how variations
in initial velocity dispersion affect the onset of the instability, and find
that an isotropic velocity dispersion can suppress the ROI entirely, while a
purely radial dispersion does not. The quantity sigma^2/vc^2 is a criterion for
instability, where regions with sigma^2/vc^2 <~1 become triaxial due to the ROI
or other perturbations. We also find that the radial orbit instability sets a
scale length at which the velocity dispersion changes rapidly from isotropic to
radially anisotropic. This scale length is proportional to the radius at which
the density profile changes shape, as is the case in the semi--analytic models;
however, the coefficient of proportionality is different by a factor of ~2.5.
We conclude that the radial orbit instability is likely to be a key physical
mechanism responsible for the nearly universal profiles of simulated dark

What's the point of knowing how?
Why is it useful to talk and think about knowledge-how? Using Edward Craig’s discussion of the function of the concepts of knowledge and knowledge-how as a jumping off point, this paper argues that considering this question can offer us new angles on the debate about knowledge-how. We consider two candidate functions for the concept of knowledge-how: pooling capacities, and mutual reliance. Craig makes the case for pooling capacities, which connects knowledge-how to our need to pool practical capacities. I argue that the evidence is much more equivocal. My suggested diagnosis is that the concept of knowledge-how plays both functions, meaning that the concept of knowledge-how is inconsistent, and that the debate about knowledge-how is at least partly a metalinguistic negotiation. High-Precision Measurement of the 19Ne Half-Life and Implications for Right-Handed Weak Currents
We report a precise determination of the 19Ne half-life to be s. This result disagrees with the most recent precision
measurements and is important for placing bounds on predicted right-handed
interactions that are absent in the current Standard Model. We are able to
identify and disentangle two competing systematic effects that influence the
accuracy of such measurements. Our findings prompt a reassessment of results
from previous high-precision lifetime measurements that used similar equipment

Retroperitoneal Castleman’s disease: advocating a multidisciplinary approach for a rare clinical entity
BACKGROUND: Castleman’s disease is a rare and poorly understood disease entity that may resemble more common conditions and represents a clinical challenge to the treating surgeon. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, we describe a case of a 61-year-old Caucasian woman with a symptomatic retroperitoneal mass. The specimen obtained from her resection contained a protuberant encapsulated mass, exhibiting microscopic features consistent with localized, unicentric Castleman’s disease. These characteristics included architectural features and immunohistochemical findings consistent with the hyaline vascular variant of Castleman’s disease. CONCLUSION: We report a very rare case of a retroperitoneal hyaline vascular type of Castleman’s disease. We discuss the diagnostic dilemma Castleman’s disease may present to the surgeon, with an emphasis on multidisciplinary management of these patients. Priority sites for wildfowl conservation in Mexico
A set of priority sites for wildfowl conservation in Mexico was determined using contemporary count data (1991–2000) from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service mid-winter surveys. We used a complementarity approach implemented through linear integer programming that addresses particular conservation concerns for every species included in the analysis and large fluctuations in numbers through time.
A set of 31 priority sites was identified, which held more than 69% of the mid-winter count total in Mexico during all surveyed years. Six sites were in the northern highlands, 12 in the central highlands, six on the Gulf of Mexico coast and seven on the upper Pacific coast. Twenty-two sites from the priority set have previously been identified as qualifying for designation as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and 20 sites are classified as Important Areas for Bird Conservation in Mexico. The information presented here provides an accountable, spatially-explicit, numerical basis for ongoing conservation planning efforts in Mexico, which can be used to improve existing wildfowl conservation networks in the country and can also be useful for conservation planning exercises elsewhere
A new class of dendrimeric gecko legs polymer particles with extraordinary structure- building, gelation and adhesive capabilities
Particulate rheology modifiers are important component of many cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical formulations. The efficiency of rheology modifiers is usually determined by the interplay between surface area and shape of suspended particles. We will present a new class of nanofibrilated dendrimeric polymer particles (DPPs) with very high surface area and morphology engineered for applications in rheology modifiers and adhesives. The DPPs are fabricated in a novel efficient and scalable process for liquid-based synthesis of nanomaterials by antisolvent precipitation in turbulently sheared medium. The process allows for a variety of polymers to be readily made into DPPs which are hierarchically structured, with a big branched corona of nanofibers spreading out in all directions. The hierarchical structure endows DPPs with high excluded volume. They build a stable three-dimensional network leading to gel-like behavior at fractions as low as 1-2 vol.% of DPPs in various liquids. In addition, the biomimetic similarity of their structure to the gecko lizards’ setae endows the DPPs with excellent adhesion and cohesion properties. Our results demonstrate that this strong adhesion and cohesion are attributed to the contact splitting and van der Waals interactions of their nanofibrous structures. This new class of polymeric particles opens new ways to make strong non-covalent binding coatings, new types of dry adhesives, nonwovens and fluid-gels. They could have a transformative role as rheology modifiers and nano-adhesives to hair and skin in many cosmetics formulations.
