Exploring the Experiences of School Nurses Identifying and Initiating Migraine Treatment in School-Age Children

    Get PDF
Migraines affect about one child in twenty worldwide and have important implications for attainment and quality of life. Whereas migraines among adolescents are common, little is known about school nurses’ experience caring for this population within the school setting. This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of school nurses in managing and treating students with migraines. Using Imogene King’s goal attainment theory as the theoretical framework, interviews with eight school nurses were conducted to understand the emotional, communicative, and practical challenges they face in providing care (Gonzalo, 2023). Key themes identified include the emotional toll of care communication barriers with students and families, limited resource access, and insufficient migraine-specific training. The findings highlight the critical need for enhanced migraine education and collaborative care strategies within schools. Although the findings are consistent with the literature, the current study is restricted by geography and does not involve any contribution from students and parents. Further studies should be done to compare different regions and school types and to study particular interventions that might help improve the student\u27s performance. Additionally, implementing collaborative programs could foster partnerships between school nurses, parents, and medical professionals to develop tailored care plans. Overall, this research contributes to an understanding of the challenges faced by school nurses and informs strategies for improving migraine management and providing support within the educational setting

Irony and the self in the lyric poetry of James Merrill.

The paper also discusses Merrill's use of form and formal poetic convention in his early lyric poetry, as well as the function of form in his two novels. His use of form suggests that it is a distancing device so that the material he is dealing with (the pain of his childhood and of love relationships) may be made more manageable. With regard to irony, the paper deals with Merrill's great theme of the evolution of the self. This great theme is manifested through two important subjects found in all of his lyric poetry: childhood and love. Merrill chooses his own life as the subject matter of most of his lyric work so that he may, through writing, resolve many of the problems his childhood created. His later lyrics suggest that he has come to terms with his past and with the fundamental ironies of existence so that he is free to live in the present. Ultimately, it is vision, and the poet as visionary, which resolves the dilemmas of his history. This vision is the stance he takes in the three book-length poems which crown his poetic career and were published in 1976, 1978, and 1980 respectively. This study was concerned with the lyric poetry of James Merrill and how irony functions in his work. The paper focuses upon the lyric poetry found in six volumes published between 1951 and 1972. It examines the concept of irony, both superficial (rhetorical) and profound, and discusses how Merrill uses both types in his work

Building ventilation implies managing the “clean” air and extracting the contaminated air through the walls, distributing and circulating the incoming air and preventing the contamination of the indoor air. The Spanish Technical Building Code, in his section HS3 – IAQ, usually set up minimum ventilation flow rates according to its typology, surface, possible contamination sources or the number of occupants, without thinking over the path of the air from the inlet to the exhaust point. For that reason, even if such standards are met within the spaces of the home, there may still be areas in the interior that suffer an excess or deficit of ventilation. The present study aims to overcome the purely quantitative performance of DBHS3, to control qualitatively the air renewal throughout the living space; this allows even to reduce the volumetric flow rate with the consequent energetic saving.

Efficient CO2-Reducing Activity of NAD-Dependent Formate Dehydrogenase from Thiobacillus sp KNK65MA for Formate Production from CO2 Gas

NAD-dependent formate dehydrogenase (FDH) from Candida boidinii (CbFDH) has been widely used in various CO2 reduction systems but its practical applications are often impeded due to low CO2-reducing activity. In this study, we demonstrated superior CO2-reducing properties of FDH from Thiobacillus sp. KNK65MA (TsFDH) for production of formate from CO2 gas. To discover more efficient CO2-reducing FDHs than a reference enzyme e. CbFDH, five FDHs were selected with biochemical properties and then, their CO2-reducing activities were evaluated. All FDHs including CbFDH showed better CO2-reducing activities at acidic pHs than at neutral pHs and four FDHs were more active than CbFDH in the CO2 reduction reaction. In particular, the FDH from Thiobacillus sp. KNK65IVIA (TsFDH) exhibited the highest CO2-reducing activity and had a dramatic preference for the reduction reaction, i.e., a 84.2-fold higher ratio of CO2 reduction to formate oxidation in catalytic efficiency (k(cat)/K-B) compared to CbFDH. Formate was produced from CO2 gas using TsFDH and CbFDH, and TsFDH showed a 5.8-fold higher formate production rate than CbFDH. A sequence and structural comparison showed that FDHs with relatively high CO2-reducing activities had elongated N- and C-terminal loops. The experimental results demonstrate that TsFDH can be an alternative to CbFDH as a biocatalyst in CO2 reduction systemsope

Quantitative Analysis of Dynamic Protein Interactions during Transcription Reveals a Role for Casein Kinase II in Polymerase-associated Factor (PAF) Complex Phosphorylation and Regulation of Histone H2B Monoubiquitylation

Using affinity purification MS approaches, we have identified a novel role for casein kinase II (CKII) in the modification of the polymerase associated factor complex (PAF-C). Our data indicate that the facilitates chromatin transcription complex (FACT) interacts with CKII and may facilitate PAF complex phosphorylation. Posttranslational modification analysis of affinity-isolated PAF-C shows extensive CKII phosphorylation of all five subunits of PAF-C, although CKII subunits were not detected as interacting partners. Consistent with this, recombinant CKII or FACT-associated CKII isolated from cells can phosphorylate PAF-C in vitro, whereas no intrinsic kinase activity was detected in PAF-C samples. Significantly, PAF-C purifications combined with stable isotope labeling in cells (SILAC) quantitation for PAF-C phosphorylation from wild-type and CKII temperature-sensitive strains (cka1Δ cka2–8) showed that PAF-C phosphorylation at consensus CKII sites is significantly reduced in cka1Δ cka2–8 strains. Consistent with a role of CKII in FACT and PAF-C function, we show that decreased CKII function in vivo results in decreased levels of histone H2B lysine 123 monoubiquitylation, a modification dependent on FACT and PAF-C. Taken together, our results define a coordinated role of CKII and FACT in the regulation of RNA polymerase II transcription through chromatin via phosphorylation of PAF-C

SelenoDB 1.0 : a database of selenoprotein genes, proteins and SECIS elements

    Get PDF
Selenoproteins are a diverse group of proteins usually misidentified and misannotated in sequence databases. The presence of an in-frame UGA (stop) codon in the coding sequence of selenoprotein genes precludes their identification and correct annotation. The in-frame UGA codons are recoded to cotranslationally incorporate selenocysteine, a rare selenium-containing amino acid. The development of ad hoc experimental and, more recently, computational approaches have allowed the efficient identification and characterization of the selenoproteomes of a growing number of species. Today, dozens of selenoprotein families have been described and more are being discovered in recently sequenced species, but the correct genomic annotation is not available for the majority of these genes. SelenoDB is a long-term project that aims to provide, through the collaborative effort of experimental and computational researchers, automatic and manually curated annotations of selenoprotein genes, proteins and SECIS elements. Version 1.0 of the database includes an initial set of eukaryotic genomic annotations, with special emphasis on the human selenoproteome, for immediate inspection by selenium researchers or incorporation into more general databases.
