The Momentum Distribution of Liquid He
We present high-resolution neutron Compton scattering measurements of liquid
He below its renormalized Fermi temperature. Theoretical predictions are in
excellent agreement with the experimental data when instrumental resolution and
final state effects are accounted for. Our results resolve the long-standing
inconsistency between theoretical and experimental estimates of the average
atomic kinetic energy.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Atomic kinetic energy, momentum distribution and structure of solid neon at zero-temperature
We report on the calculation of the ground-state atomic kinetic energy,
, and momentum distribution of solid Ne by means of the diffusion Monte
Carlo method and Aziz HFD-B pair potential. This approach is shown to perform
notably for this crystal since we obtain very good agreement with respect to
experimental thermodynamic data. Additionally, we study the structural
properties of solid Ne at densities near the equilibrium by estimating the
radial pair-distribution function, Lindemann's ratio and atomic density profile
around the positions of the perfect crystalline lattice. Our value for
at the equilibrium density is K, which agrees perfectly with the
recent prediction made by Timms {\it et al.}, K, based on their
deep-inelastic neutron scattering experiments carried out over the temperature
range K, and also with previous path integral Monte Carlo results
obtained with the Lennard-Jones and Aziz HFD-C2 atomic pairwise interactions.
The one-body density function of solid Ne is calculated accurately and found to
fit perfectly, within statistical uncertainty, to a Gaussian curve.
Furthermore, we analyze the degree of anharmonicity of solid Ne by calculating
some of its microscopic ground-state properties within traditional harmonic
approaches. We provide insightful comparison to solid He in terms of the
Debye model, in order to size the relevance of anharmonic effects in Ne.Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures. To be published in Physical Review
Beyond the binary collision approximation for the large- response of liquid He
We discuss corrections to the linear response of a many-body system beyond
the binary collision approximation. We first derive for smooth pair
interactions an exact expression of the response , considerably
simplifying existing forms and present also the generalization for interactions
with a strong, short-range repulsion. We then apply the latter to the case of
liquid He. We display the numerical influence of the correction
around the quasi-elastic peak and in the low-intensity wings of the response,
far from that peak. Finally we resolve an apparent contradiction in previous
discussions around the fourth order cumulant expansion coefficient. Our results
prove that the large- response of liquid He can be accurately understood
on the basis of a dynamical theory.Comment: 19 p. Figs. available on reques
Poetry, Religion, and Empowerment in Nigerian Lesbian Self-Writing
The Nigerian LGBT community is nearly invisible and mostly functions underground or through pseudonyms, in spite of the emerging visibility of queer writing in recent times. As a Nigerian lesbian woman and writer, in this article I seek to analyse some of my queer poems through an auto-ethnographic lens. While providing a brief history of contemporary Nigerian queer writings, their beginnings, their struggles, and their growth, even in the midst of their attacks, I will focus on and draw upon specific ex-periences as narrated in some of my poems, to explore how the religious constructions of my life and the lives of LGBT Nigerians can both limit and empower us. Through my experiences and the sharing of these involve-ments, I hope to be a part of the process that dismantles the religious block of homophobia that crushes us, and to reclaim religious language and imagery as a site of empowerment. Through my poetic testimonies, I liberate myself and, hopefully, my queer community
External Influences on Students’ Choice of Clothing in Takoradi Polytechnic
Clothing is an important factor in the interpretation of body image which affects the response behaviour of the beholder. A person’s appearance profoundly affects the way he or she is treated by others at home, social gathering, market, job area, office or school. Selecting clothing requires careful considerations. The purpose of the study was to find out external influences on students’ choice of clothing in Takoradi Polytechnic. The research design was descriptive. Questionnaires and focus group discussion guide were used. Departments of Fashion and Accounting participated with respondents chosen through stratified random sampling. Sample consisted of 207 with a total population of 699 students, 77 males and 130 females. Study revealed students dress casually for lectures instead of formally because casual wear could take any form. Male students’ were normally driven internally indicating individuality while female students were mostly externally directed. Both sexes would least choose clothing for warm relationship. The more individuals they were aware of their inner feelings, the more differentiation they exhibited in their choice of clothing. This is contrary to the general perception that students or the youth choice of clothing is socially driven. However, some external factors were also quite significant in students’ choices and should be given close attention if youth clothing are undesirable. This calls for continues education to streamline vital issues that are of significance to academic institutions and the African society as a whole
High-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures: a microscopic approach
The high-momentum dynamic structure function of liquid 3He-4He mixtures has
been studied introducing final state effects. Corrections to the impulse
approximation have been included using a generalized Gersch-Rodriguez theory
that properly takes into account the Fermi statistics of 3He atoms. The
microscopic inputs, as the momentum distributions and the two-body density
matrices, correspond to a variational (fermi)-hypernetted chain calculation.
The agreement with experimental data obtained at \AA is not
completely satisfactory, the comparison being difficult due to inconsistencies
present in the scattering measurements. The significant differences between the
experimental determinations of the 4He condensate fraction and the 3He kinetic
energy, and the theoretical results, still remain unsolved.Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.
