The Employment Retention and Advancement Project: Results from the Substance Abuse Case Management Program in New York City

Participants in an intensive care management program for public assistance recipients with substance abuse problems were slightly more likely to enroll in treatment than participants in less intensive services. However, the intensive program had no effects on employment or public benefit receipt among the full sample

Transitional Jobs for Ex-Prisoners: Implementation, Two-Year Impacts, and Costs of the Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) Prisoner Reentry Program

    Get PDF
A random assignment study shows that participants in CEO's transitional jobs program were less likely to be convicted of a crime, to be admitted to prison for a new conviction, or to be incarcerated for any reason in prison or jail over the first two years. The program also had a large but short-lived impact on employment

Transitional Jobs for Ex-Prisoners: Early Impacts from a Random Assignment Evaluation of the Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) Prisoner Reentry Program

After one year, CEO's transitional jobs program generated a large but short-lived increase in employment for ex-prisoners. A subgroup of recently released prisoners showed positive effects on recidivism: They were less likely to have their parole revoked, to be convicted of a felony, and to be reincarcerated than the control group

Depression in the Elderly: Attitudes of Seniors and Practices of Healthcare Providers

    Get PDF
Introduction: Support & Services at Home (SASH) is a model for independent housing for seniors that was developed in 2009 by a partnership of community providers and Cathedral Square Corporation. Results of a 2010 PHQ-9 screen on depression administered to seniors living at Heineberg Senior Housing, a Cathedral Square community, found that 30% of residents had mild depression, 6% moderate depression, and 6% moderate to severe depression. This topic has been targeted by SASH coordinators so that they may provide more support for their residents. Furthermore, a high prevalence of depression amongst the elderly population has been well-documented and this disease is often under-diagnosed, under-treated, or missed altogether.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1069/thumbnail.jp

Sunscreens - Which and what for?

    Get PDF
It is well established that sun exposure is the main cause for the development of skin cancer. Chronic continuous UV radiation is believed to induce malignant melanoma, whereas intermittent high-dose UV exposure contributes to the occurrence of actinic keratosis as precursor lesions of squamous cell carcinoma as well as basal cell carcinoma. Not only photocarcinogenesis but also the mechanisms of photoaging have recently become apparent. In this respect the use of sunscreens seemed to prove to be more and more important and popular within the last decades. However, there is still inconsistency about the usefulness of sunscreens. Several studies show that inadequate use and incomplete UV spectrum efficacy may compromise protection more than previously expected. The sunscreen market is crowded by numerous products. Inorganic sunscreens such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide have a wide spectral range of activity compared to most of the organic sunscreen products. It is not uncommon for organic sunscreens to cause photocontact allergy, but their cosmetic acceptability is still superior to the one given by inorganic sunscreens. Recently, modern galenic approaches such as micronization and encapsulation allow the development of high-quality inorganic sunscreens. The potential systemic toxicity of organic sunscreens has lately primarily been discussed controversially in public, and several studies show contradictory results. Although a matter of debate, at present the sun protection factor (SPF) is the most reliable information for the consumer as a measure of sunscreen filter efficacy. In this context additional tests have been introduced for the evaluation of not only the protective effect against erythema but also protection against UV-induced immunological and mutational effects. Recently, combinations of UV filters with agents active in DNA repair have been introduced in order to improve photoprotection. This article reviews the efficacy of sunscreens in the prevention of epithelial and nonepithelial skin cancer, the effect on immunosuppression and the value of the SPF as well as new developments on the sunscreen market. Effects of using virtual reality during exercise on perceptions of pain and fatigue in individuals with spinal cord injury

    Get PDF
Pain and fatigue are among the most commonly reported barriers to exercise for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Previous studies have documented virtual reality's (VR) pain and fatigue reducing properties. However, no study has investigated these effects during exercise in individuals with SCI. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of using VR during exercise on perceptions of pain and fatigue in individuals with SCI. Methods: Eleven individuals with traumatic SCI aged 43.29 + 17.5 years (X + SD) participated in this repeated measure comparative study. Three visits were required from each participant. Baseline data were collected during the first visit. The following two visits consisted of a 6-minute exercise test using arm ergometry. Participants were randomly assigned to an exercise condition, either VR or non-VR. Participants rated their pain and fatigue using visual analogue scales and qualitative data were collected following the completion of the exercise test. Dependent variables included pain and fatigue. Results: Statistically significant improvements were seen in pain (p 0.01) and fatigue (p 0.05). Three higher order themes emerged from the qualitative analysis, positive psychological impact, positive physiological impact, and virtual reality enhancing exercise experience. Conclusion: Virtual reality may be an effective, alternative addition to conventional exercise for reducing perceived pain and fatigue during arm-ergometry exercise in individuals with SCI.California State University, Northridge. Detección de anticuerpos contra el virus de diarrea viral bovina en ganado bovino de Finca San Julián, Patulul, Suchitepéquez en el año 2018

    Get PDF
