Identification of photons in double beta-decay experiments using segmented germanium detectors - studies with a GERDA Phase II prototype detector
The sensitivity of experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta-decay
of germanium was so far limited by the background induced by external
gamma-radiation. Segmented germanium detectors can be used to identify photons
and thus reduce this background component.
The GERmanium Detector Array, GERDA, will use highly segmented germanium
detectors in its second phase. The identification of photonic events is
investigated using a prototype detector. The results are compared with Monte

Pulse shape simulation for segmented true-coaxial HPGe detectors
A new package to simulate the formation of electrical pulses in segmented
true-coaxial high purity germanium detectors is presented. The computation of
the electric field and weighting potentials inside the detector as well as of
the trajectories of the charge carriers is described. In addition, the
treatment of bandwidth limitations and noise are discussed. Comparison of
simulated to measured pulses, obtained from an 18-fold segmented detector

Characterization of the first true coaxial 18-fold segmented n-type prototype detector for the GERDA project
The first true coaxial 18-fold segmented n-type HPGe prototype detector
produced by Canberra-France for the GERDA neutrinoless double beta-decay
project was tested both at Canberra-France and at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer
Physik in Munich. The main characteristics of the detector are given and
measurements concerning detector properties are described. A novel method to

The GALATEA Test-Facility for High Purity Germanium Detectors
GALATEA is a test facility designed to investigate bulk and surface effects
in high purity germanium detectors. A vacuum tank houses an infrared screened
volume with a cooled detector inside. A system of three stages allows an almost
complete scan of the detector. The main feature of GALATEA is that there is no
material between source and detector. This allows the usage of alpha and beta
sources as well as of a laser beam to study surface effects. A 19-fold
segmented true-coaxial germanium detector was used for commissioning
Status of the profession
The number of astronomers has grown by about 40 percent over the past decade. The number of astronomers with jobs in industry, or with long-term, non-tenured, jobs has increased dramatically compared with traditional faculty positions. The increase in the number of astronomers and the declining share of the NSF budget going to astronomy has led to extreme difficulties in the NSF grant program and in support of the National Observatories. In 1989, direct NASA support of astronomers through the grants program exceeds that of NSF, although the total of the NSF grants program over decade far exceeds that of NASA. Access to major new telescopes will be important issue for the 1990s. US astronomers, who once had a monopoly on telescopes larger than 3 meters, will, by the year 2000, have access to just half of the world's optical telescope area
Characterisation of an n-type segmented BEGe detector
A four-fold segmented n-type point-contact "Broad Energy" high-purity
germanium detector, SegBEGe, has been characterised at the Max-Planck-Institut
f\"ur Physik in Munich. The main characteristics of the detector are described
and first measurements concerning the detector properties are presented. The
possibility to use mirror pulses to determine source positions is discussed as
well as charge losses observed close to the core contact
Speckle Interferometry of Metal-Poor Stars in the Solar Neighborhood. I
We report the results of speckle-interferometric observations of 109 high
proper-motion metal-poor stars made with the 6-m telescope of the Special
Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We resolve eight
objects -- G102-20, G191-55, BD+19~1185A, G89-14, G87-45, G87-47,
G111-38, and G114-25 -- into individual components and we are the first to
astrometrically resolve seven of these stars. New resolved systems included two
triple (G111-38, G87-47) and one quadruple (G89-14) star. The ratio of
single-to-binary-to-triple-to-quadruple systems among the stars of our sample

The Chromospheric Activity and Ages of M Dwarf Stars in Wide Binary Systems
We investigate the relationship between age and chromospheric activity for
139 M dwarf stars in wide binary systems with white dwarf companions. The age
of each system is determined from the cooling age of its white dwarf component.
The current limit for activity-age relations found for M dwarfs in open
clusters is 4 Gyr. Our unique approach to finding ages for M stars allows for
the exploration of this relationship at ages older than 4 Gyr. The general
trend of stars remaining active for a longer time at later spectral type is
confirmed. However, our larger sample and greater age range reveals additional
complexity in assigning age based on activity alone. We find that M dwarfs in
wide binaries older than 4 Gyr depart from the log-linear relation for clusters
and are found to have activity at magnitudes, colors and masses which are
brighter, bluer and more massive than predicted by the cluster relation. In
addition to our activity-age results, we present the measured radial velocities
and complete space motions for 161 white dwarf stars in wide binaries.Comment: 22 pages including 9 figures and 5 tables. Accepted for publication

Anomalous behavior of pion production in high energy particle collisions
A shape of invariant differential cross section for charged hadron production
as function of transverse momentum measured in various collider experiments is
analyzed. Contrary to the behavior of produced charged kaons, protons and
antiprotons, the pion spectra require an anomalously high contribution of an
