Sound radiation from a high speed axial flow fan due to the inlet turbulence quadrupole interaction
A formula is obtained for the total acoustic power spectra radiated out the front of the fan as a function of frequency. The formula involves the design parameters of the fan as well as the statistical properties of the incident turbulence. Numerical results are calculated for values of the parameters in the range of interest for quiet fans tested at the Lewis Research Center. As in the dipole analysis, when the turbulence correlation lengths become equal to the interblade spacing, the predicted spectra exhibit peaks around the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. There has recently been considerable conjecture about whether the stretching of turbulent eddies as they enter a stationary fan could result in the inlet turbulence being the dominant source of pure tones from nontranslating fans. The results of the current analysis show that, unless the turbulent eddies become quite elongated, this noise source contributes predominantly to the broadband spectrum

Electron-phonon coupling in semimetals in a high magnetic field
We consider the effect of electron-phonon coupling in semimetals in high
magnetic fields, with regard to elastic modes that can lead to a redistribution
of carriers between pockets. We show that in a clean three dimensional system,
at each Landau level crossing, this leads to a discontinuity in the
magnetostriction, and a divergent contribution to the elastic modulus. We
estimate the magnitude of this effect in the group V semimetal Bismuth.Comment: 2 figure
The use of a battery of tracking tests in the quantitative evaluation of neurological function
A tracking test battery has been applied in a drug trail designed to compare the efficacy of L-DOPA and amantadine to that of L-DOPA and placebo in the treatment of 28 patients with Parkinson's disease. The drug trial provided an ideal opportunity for objectively evaluating the usefulness of tracking tests in assessing changes in neurologic function. Evaluating changes in patient performance resulting from disease progression and controlled clinical trials is of great importance in establishing effective treatment programs
On magnetic leaf-wise intersections
In this article we introduce the notion of a magnetic leaf-wise intersection
point which is a generalization of the leaf-wise intersection point with
magnetic effects. We also prove the existence of magnetic leaf-wise

Cotton harvest aids (1994)
Removing leaves and opening bolls with harvest aids are important components of a management plan for producing high-quality cotton fiber. When not properly managed, harvest aids may reduce yield and quality. By properly managing the time of defoliation, the crop can be prepared for a timely harvest, which is critical in Missouri's short season environment. The number of suitable hours for harvest operations decreases rapidly during the fall. With timely harvest, earlier stalk destruction can occur as an essential part of insect and disease management. The Role of Nonlinear Dynamics in Quantitative Atomic Force Microscopy
Various methods of force measurement with the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM)
are compared for their ability to accurately determine the tip-surface force
from analysis of the nonlinear cantilever motion. It is explained how
intermodulation, or the frequency mixing of multiple drive tones by the
nonlinear tip-surface force, can be used to concentrate the nonlinear motion in
a narrow band of frequency near the cantilevers fundamental resonance, where
accuracy and sensitivity of force measurement are greatest. Two different
methods for reconstructing tip-surface forces from intermodulation spectra are
explained. The reconstruction of both conservative and dissipative tip-surface
interactions from intermodulation spectra are demonstrated on simulated data.Comment: 25 pages (preprint, double space) 7 figure
Probability of local bifurcation type from a fixed point: A random matrix perspective
Results regarding probable bifurcations from fixed points are presented in
the context of general dynamical systems (real, random matrices), time-delay
dynamical systems (companion matrices), and a set of mappings known for their
properties as universal approximators (neural networks). The eigenvalue spectra
is considered both numerically and analytically using previous work of Edelman
et. al. Based upon the numerical evidence, various conjectures are presented.
The conclusion is that in many circumstances, most bifurcations from fixed
points of large dynamical systems will be due to complex eigenvalues.
Nevertheless, surprising situations are presented for which the aforementioned
conclusion is not general, e.g. real random matrices with Gaussian elements
with a large positive mean and finite variance.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figure
Measurement of the Survival Probabilities for Hot Fusion Reactions
We have studied the fission-neutron emission competition in highly excited
Hs (Z=108) (where the fission barrier is due to shell effects) formed
by a hot fusion reaction. Matching cross bombardments (Mg + Cm
and Mg + Cm) were used to identify the properties of first
chance fission of Hs. A Harding-Farley analysis of the fission neutrons
emitted in the Mg + Cm was performed to identify the pre- and
post-scission components of the neutron multiplicities in each system.

(E = 63 MeV) is 0.89 0.13, i.e., 90 of the highly
excited nuclei survive.The high value of that survival probability is due to
dissipative effects during de-excitation. A proper description of the survival
probabilities of excited superheavy nuclei formed in hot fusion reactions
requires consideration of both dynamic and static (shell-related) effects
