A Systematic Search for High Surface Brightness Giant Arcs in a Sloan Digital Sky Survey Cluster Sample
We present the results of a search for gravitationally-lensed giant arcs
conducted on a sample of 825 SDSS galaxy clusters. Both a visual inspection of
the images and an automated search were performed and no arcs were found. This
result is used to set an upper limit on the arc probability per cluster. We
present selection functions for our survey, in the form of arc detection
efficiency curves plotted as functions of arc parameters, both for the visual
inspection and the automated search. The selection function is such that we are
sensitive only to long, high surface brightness arcs with g-band surface
brightness mu_g 10. Our upper limits on
the arc probability are compatible with previous arc searches. Lastly, we
report on a serendipitous discovery of a giant arc in the SDSS data, known

M1/M2 Macrophage Polarity in Normal and Complicated Pregnancy
Tissue macrophages play an important role in all stages of pregnancy, including uterine stromal remodeling (decidualization) before embryo implantation, parturition, and postpartum uterine involution. The activation state and function of utero-placental macrophages are largely dependent on the local tissue microenvironment. Thus, macrophages are involved in a variety of activities such as regulation of immune cell activities, placental cell invasion, angiogenesis, and tissue remodeling. Disruption of the uterine microenvironment, particularly during the early stages of pregnancy (decidualization, implantation, and placentation) can have profound effects on macrophage activity and subsequently impact pregnancy outcome. In this review, we will provide an overview of the temporal and spatial regulation of utero-placental macrophage activation during normal pregnancy in humans and rodents with a focus on more recent findings. We will also discuss the role of M1/M2 dysregulation within the intrauterine environment during adverse pregnancy outcomes
Loose Groups of Galaxies in the Las Campanas Redshift Survey
A ``friends-of-friends'' percolation algorithm has been used to extract a
catalogue of dn/n = 80 density enhancements (groups) from the six slices of the
Las Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). The full catalogue contains 1495 groups
and includes 35% of the LCRS galaxy sample. A clean sample of 394 groups has
been derived by culling groups from the full sample which either are too close
to a slice edge, have a crossing time greater than a Hubble time, have a
corrected velocity dispersion of zero, or contain a 55-arcsec ``orphan'' (a
galaxy with a mock redshift which was excluded from the original LCRS redshift
catalogue due to its proximity to another galaxy -- i.e., within 55 arcsec).
Median properties derived from the clean sample include: line-of-sight velocity
dispersion sigma_los = 164km/s, crossing time t_cr = 0.10/H_0, harmonic radius
R_h = 0.58/h Mpc, pairwise separation R_p = 0.64/h Mpc, virial mass M_vir =
(1.90x10^13)/h M_sun, total group R-band luminosity L_tot = (1.30x10^11)/h^2
L_sun, and R-band mass-to-light ratio M/L = 171h M_sun/L_sun; the median number

Stability and magnetically induced heating behavior of lipid-coated Fe3O4 nanoparticles
Magnetic nanoparticles that are currently explored for various biomedical applications exhibit a high propensity to minimize total surface energy through aggregation. This study introduces a unique, thermoresponsive nanocomposite design demonstrating substantial colloidal stability of superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles (SPIONs) due to a surface-immobilized lipid layer. Lipid coating was accomplished in different buffer systems, pH 7.4, using an equimolar mixture of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and l-α-dipalmitoylphosphatidyl glycerol (DPPG). Particle size and zeta potential were measured by dynamic laser light scattering. Heating behavior within an alternating magnetic field was compared between the commercial MFG-1000 magnetic field generator at 7 mT (1 MHz) and an experimental, laboratory-made magnetic hyperthermia system at 16.6 mT (13.7 MHz). The results revealed that product quality of lipid-coated SPIONs was significantly dependent on the colloidal stability of uncoated SPIONs during the coating process. Greatest stability was achieved at 0.02 mg/mL in citrate buffer (mean diameter = 80.0 ± 1.7 nm; zeta potential = -47.1 ± 2.6 mV). Surface immobilization of an equimolar DPPC/DPPG layer effectively reduced the impact of buffer components on particle aggregation. Most stable suspensions of lipid-coated nanoparticles were obtained at 0.02 mg/mL in citrate buffer (mean diameter = 179.3 ± 13.9 nm; zeta potential = -19.1 ± 2.3 mV). The configuration of the magnetic field generator significantly affected the heating properties of fabricated SPIONs. Heating rates of uncoated nanoparticles were substantially dependent on buffer composition but less influenced by particle concentration. In contrast, thermal behavior of lipid-coated nanoparticles within an alternating magnetic field was less influenced by suspension vehicle but dramatically more sensitive to particle concentration. These results underline the advantages of lipid-coated SPIONs on colloidal stability without compromising magnetically induced hyperthermia properties. Since phospholipids are biocompatible, these unique lipid-coated Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles offer exciting opportunities as thermoresponsive drug delivery carriers for targeted, stimulus-induced therapeutic interventions. LBT and Spitzer Spectroscopy of Star-Forming Galaxies at 1 < z < 3: Extinction and Star Formation Rate Indicators
We present spectroscopic observations in the rest-frame optical and near- to
mid-infrared wavelengths of four gravitationally lensed infrared (IR) luminous
star-forming galaxies at redshift 1 < z < 3 from the LUCIFER instrument on the
Large Binocular Telescope and the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer. The sample
was selected to represent pure, actively star-forming systems, absent of active
galactic nuclei. The large lensing magnifications result in high
signal-to-noise spectra that can probe faint IR recombination lines, including
Pa-alpha and Br-alpha at high redshifts. The sample was augmented by three
lensed galaxies with similar suites of unpublished data and observations from
the literature, resulting in the final sample of seven galaxies. We use the IR
recombination lines in conjunction with H-alpha observations to probe the
extinction, Av, of these systems, as well as testing star formation rate (SFR)
indicators against the SFR measured by fitting spectral energy distributions to
far-IR photometry. Our galaxies occupy a range of Av from ~0 to 5.9 mag, larger
than previously known for a similar range of IR luminosities at these
redshifts. Thus, estimates of SFR even at z ~ 2 must take careful count of
extinction in the most IR luminous galaxies. We also measure extinction by
comparing SFR estimates from optical emission lines with those from far-IR
measurements. The comparison of results from these two independent methods
indicates a large variety of dust distribution scenarios at 1 < z < 3. Without
correcting for dust extinction, the H-alpha SFR indicator underestimates the
SFR; the size of the necessary correction depends on the IR luminosity and dust
distribution scenario. Individual SFR estimates based on the 6.2 micron PAH
emission line luminosity do not show a systematic discrepancy with extinction,

Merging Galaxies in the SDSS EDR
We present a new catalog of merging galaxies obtained through an automated
systematic search routine. The 1479 new pairs of merging galaxies were found in
approximately 462 sq deg of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release
(SDSS EDR; Stoughton et al. 2002) photometric data, and the pair catalog is
complete for galaxies in the magnitude range 16.0 <= g* <= 20.
The selection algorithm, implementing a variation on the original
Karachentsev (1972) criteria, proved to be very efficient and fast. Merging
galaxies were selected such that the inter-galaxy separations were less than
the sum of the component galaxies' radii.
We discuss the characteristics of the sample in terms of completeness, pair
separation, and the Holmberg effect. We also present an online atlas of images
for the SDSS EDR pairs obtained using the corrected frames from the SDSS EDR
database. The atlas images also include the relevant data for each pair member.
This catalog will be useful for conducting studies of the general
characteristics of merging galaxies, their environments, and their component
galaxies. The redshifts for a subset of the interacting and merging galaxies
and the distribution of angular sizes for these systems indicate the SDSS
provides a much deeper sample than almost any other wide-area catalog to date.Comment: 58 pages, which includes 15 figures and 6 tables. Figures 2, 8, 9,

Tuberculin screening of some selected Fulani lactating cows in north-central Nigeria
The prevalence of mycobacterial infection among lactating Fulani cows was investigated in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Kaduna State of Nigeria. Tuberculin testing using single comparative intradermal tuberculin test showed a 14.6 % positive, 4 % doubtful, and 81.4 % negative reactors. Mycobacterial infection was found to be present in the nomadic (constantly moving) and seminomadic (limited movement) management systems studied but management showed no significant effect on the prevalence of the disease.
