Spontaneous Charging and Crystallization of Water Droplets in Oil
We study the spontaneous charging and the crystallization of spherical
micron-sized water-droplets dispersed in oil by numerically solving, within a
Poisson-Boltzmann theory in the geometry of a spherical cell, for the density
profiles of the cations and anions in the system. We take into account
screening, ionic Born self-energy differences between oil and water, and
partitioning of ions over the two media. We find that the surface charge
density of the droplet as induced by the ion partitioning is significantly
affected by the droplet curvature and by the finite density of the droplets. We
also find that the salt concentration and the dielectric constant regime in
which crystallization of the water droplets is predicted is enhanced
substantially compared to results based on the planar oil-water interface,

High prevalence of anelloviruses in vitreous fluid of children with seasonal hyperacute panuveitis.
Seasonal hyperacute panuveitis (SHAPU) is a potentially blinding ocular disease occurring in Nepal that principally affects young children. Random amplification of partially purified vitreous fluid (VF)-derived nucleic acid revealed the presence of human anelloviruses in VF of SHAPU patients. In a comparative study of patients with different ocular pathologies, SHAPU patients were at highest risk of harboring anelloviruses in their eyes. The majority of SHAPU patients had multiple anelloviruses in their VF. The ocular anellovirus load in SHAPU and non-SHAPU patients did not differ and no SHAPU-specific anellovirus variant was detected. Analysis of paired serum and VF samples from SHAPU and non-SHAPU patients showed that the anellovirus detected in VF samples most likely originated from the systemic viral pool during viremia, potentially through breakdown of the blood-ocular barrier. The detection of anelloviruses in VF samples of uveitis patients, profoundly so in SHAPU patients, is imperative and warrants elucidation of its clinical significance
COVID-19 and the Demand for Online Grocery Shopping:Empirical Evidence from the Netherlands
There has been a pronounced increase in online shopping since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. We study the effect of the pandemic on demand for online grocery shopping specifically, using municipality-level data from a Dutch online supermarket. We find that an additional hospital admission increased app traffic by 7.3 percent and sales per order by 0.31 percent. Local hospital admissions do not correlate with the variety of groceries ordered, but online search behavior does, suggesting that hoarding behavior is driven by the general perception and impact of the virus rather than local conditions. Local COVID-19 conditions also have different effects in urban versus non-urban municipalities, with local hospital admissions increasing app traffic in urban areas but lowering sales per order as compared to non-urban areas. It remains to be seen whether the demand for online grocery shopping will permanently increase as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.</p
