110 GHz rapid, continous tuning from an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a fiber-amplified DBR diode laser
A singly-resonant continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (cw-OPO) pumped by a fiber-amplified diode laser is described. Tuning of the pump source allowed the OPO output to be tuned continuously, without mode-hops, over 110 GHz in 29 ms. Discontinuous pump tuning over 20 nm in the region of 3.4 µm was also obtained. The rapid and continuous idler tuning was demonstrated by the measurement of a methane absorption spectrum. We believe this to be the first example of a singly-resonant OPO pumped by a fiber-amplified diode laser and the mode-hop free tuning range to be the highest reported for a cw-OPO
Mid-infrared wavelength- and frequency-modulation spectroscopy with a pump-modulated singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator
We describe the implementation of the wavelength- and frequency-modulation spectroscopy techniques using a singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a fiber-amplified diode laser. Frequency modulation of the diode laser was transferred to the OPO¿s mid-infrared idler output, avoiding the need for external modulation devices. This approach thus provides a means of implementing these important techniques with powerful, widely tunable, mid-infrared sources while retaining the simple, flexible modulation properties of diode lasers
Spectropolarimetry of the Luminous Narrow-Line Seyfert Galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS 13224-3809
We observed the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies IRAS 20181-2244 and IRAS
13324-3809 with a new spectropolarimeter on the RC spectrograph at the CTIO 4m
telescope. Previously it had been suggested that IRAS 20181-2244 was a Type 2
QSO and thus might contain an obscured broad-line region which could be
detected by the presence of broad Balmer lines in the polarized flux. We found
the object to be polarized at about 2%, and constant with wavelength, (unlike
most narrow-line Seyfert 1s), but with no evidence of broad Balmer lines in
polarized flux. The spectropolarimetry indicates that the scattering material
is inside the BLR. IRAS 13224-3809, notable for its high variability in X-ray
and UV wavelengths, has a low polarization consistent with a Galactic

Central Masses and Broad-Line Region Sizes of Active Galactic Nuclei: I. Comparing the Photoionization and Reverberation Techniques
The masses and emission-line region sizes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs)
can be measured by ``reverberation-mapping'' (measuring the lag of the
emission-line luminosity after changes in the continuum). We use tis technique
to calibrate similar size and mass estimates made by photoionization models of
the AGN line-emitting regions. We compile a sample of 19 AGNs with reliable
reverberation and spectroscopy data, twice the number available previously. The
data provide strong evidence that the BLR size and the emission-line width
measure directly the central mass. Two methods are used to estimate the
distance of the broad emission-line region (BLR) from the ionizing source: the
photoionization method (available for many AGNs but has large intrinsic
uncertainties), and the reverberation method (gives very reliable distances,
but available for only a few objects). The distance estimate is combined with
the velocity dispersion, derived from the broad Hb line profile, to estimate
the virial mass. Comparing the central masses calculated with the reverberation
method to those calculated using a photoionization model, we find a highly
significant, nearly linear correlation. This provides a calibration of the
photoionization method on the objects with presently available reverberation
data, which should enable mass estimates for all AGNs with measured Hb line
width. Comparing the BLR sizes given by the two methods also enables us to
estimate the ionizing EUV luminosity which is directly unobservable. We find it
to be typically ten times the visible (monochromatic luminosity at 5100A). The
inferred Eddington ratio of the individual objects in our sample are 0.001-0.03
(visible luminosity) and 0.01-0.3 (ionizing luminosity).Comment: 27 pages Latex, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in the

On the Nature of Soft X-ray Weak Quasi-Stellar Objects
Recent studies of QSOs with ROSAT suggest the existence of a significant
population of Soft X-ray Weak QSOs (SXW QSOs) where the soft X-ray flux is ~
10-30 times smaller than in typical QSOs. As a first step in a systematic study
of these objects, we establish a well-defined sample of SXW QSOs which includes
all alpha_ox<=-2 QSOs from the Boroson & Green (1992) sample of 87 BQS QSOs.
SXW QSOs comprise about 11% of this optically selected QSO sample. From an
analysis of CIV absorption in the 55 BG92 QSOs with available CIV data, we find
a remarkably strong correlation between alpha_ox and the CIV absorption
equivalent width. This correlation suggests that absorption is the primary
cause of soft X-ray weakness in QSOs, and it reveals a continuum of absorption
properties connecting unabsorbed QSOs, X-ray warm absorber QSOs, SXW QSOs and
BAL QSOs. From a practical point of view, our correlation demonstrates that
selection by soft X-ray weakness is an effective (>=80% successful) and
observationally inexpensive way to find low-redshift QSOs with strong and
interesting ultraviolet absorption. We have also identified several notable
differences between the optical emission-line properties of SXW QSOs and those
of the other BG92 QSOs. SXW QSOs show systematically low [O III] luminosities
as well as distinctive H-beta profiles. They tend to lie toward the weak-[O
III] end of BG92 eigenvector 1, as do many low-ionization BAL QSOs. Unabsorbed
Seyferts and QSOs with similar values of eigenvector 1 have been suggested to
have extreme values of a primary physical parameter, perhaps mass accretion
rate relative to the Eddington rate (M-dot/M-dot_{Edd}). If these suggestions
are correct, it is likely that SXW QSOs also tend to have generally high values

Mid-IR continuous-wave fiber-laser-pumped optical parametric oscillators
We review recent developments in continuous-wave mid-infrared optical parametric oscillators pumped by fiber lasers. Such devices are potentially valuable spectroscopic sources providing high output powers and rapid, wide-range tuning in the mid-infrared molecular fingerprint region
Pilot Experiments with Electrodialysis and Ozonation for the Production of a Fertilizer from Urine
Pilot tests were performed with a process combination of electrodialysis and ozonation for the removal of micropollutants and the concentration of nutrients in urine. In continuous and batch experiments, maximum concentration factors up to 3.5 and 4.1 were obtained, respectively. The desalination capacity did not decrease significantly during continuous operation periods of several weeks. Membrane cleaning after 195 days resulted in approximately 35% increase in desalination rate. The Yeast Estrogen Screen (YES), a bioassay that selectively detects oestrogenic compounds, confirmed that about 90% of the oestrogenic activity was removed by electrodialysis. HPLC analysis showed that ibuprofen was removed to a high extent, while other micropollutants were below the detection limit. In view of the fact that ibuprofen is among the most rapidly transported micropollutants in electrodialysis processes, this result indicates that electrodialysis provides an effective barrier for micropollutants. Standardised plant growth tests were performed in the field with the salt solution resulting from the treatment by electrodialysis and subsequent ozonation. The results show that the plant height is comparable to synthetic fertilisers, but the crop yield is slightly lower. The latter is probably caused by volatilisation losses during field application, which can be prevented by improved application technologies
The UV spectra of NLS1s - Implications for their broad line regions
We study the UV spectra of NLS1 galaxies and compare them with typical
Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars. The NLS1 spectra show narrower UV lines as well
as weaker CIV lambda 1549 and CIII] lambda 1909 emission. We show that these
line properties are due to a lower ionization parameter and somewhat higher BLR
cloud densities. These modified conditions can be explained by the hotter big
blue bumps observed in NLS1s, which are in turn due to higher L/L_Edd ratios,
as shown by our accretion disk and corona modeling of the NLS1 continua. We
also present evidence that the Boroson & Green eigenvector 1, which is
correlated with the optical and UV emission-line properties, is not driven by
orientation and hence NLS1s, which have extreme eigenvector 1 values, are not

The Ultraluminous X-ray Sources near the Center of M82
We report the identification of a recurrent ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX),
a highly absorbed X-ray source (possibly a background AGN), and a young
supernova remnant near the center of the starburst galaxy M82. From a series of
Chandra observations taken from 1999 to 2005, we found that the transient ULX
first appeared in 1999 October. The source turned off in 2000 January, but
later reappeared and has been active since then. The X-ray luminosity of this
source varies from below the detection level (~2.5e38 erg/s) to its active
state in between ~7e39 erg/s and 1.3e40 erg/s (in the 0.5-10 keV energy band)
and shows unusual spectral changes. The X-ray spectra of some Chandra
observations are best fitted with an absorbed power-law model with photon index
ranging from 1.3 to 1.7. These spectra are similar to those of Galactic black
hole binary candidates seen in the low/hard state except that a very hard
spectrum was seen in one of the observations. By comparing with near infrared
images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope, the ULX is found to be located
within a young star cluster. Radio imaging indicates that it is associated with
a H II region. We suggest that the ULX is likely to be a > 100 solar mass
intermediate-mass black hole in the low/hard state. In addition to the
transient ULX, we also found a highly absorbed hard X-ray source which is
likely to be an AGN and an ultraluminous X-ray emitting young supernova remnant
which may be related to a 100-year old gamma-ray burst event, within 2 arcsec

The Radio Quiescence of Active Galaxies with High Accretion Rates
We present 6 cm Very Large Array observations of the Greene & Ho (2004)
sample of 19 low-mass active galaxies with high accretion rates. This is one of
the only studies of a uniform sample of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies
with such high sensitivity and resolution. Although we detect only one source,
the entire sample is very radio-quiet down to strong limits. GH10 was found to
have a radio power of 8.5 x 10^21 W/Hz, and a ratio R = f(6 cm)/f(4400 A) of
2.8. The 3 sigma upper limits for the remaining nondetections correspond to
radio powers from 3 x 10^20 to 8 x 10^21 W/Hz and 0.47 < R <9.9. Stacking all
nondetections yields an even stronger upper limit of R < 0.27. An assessment of
existing observations in the literature confirms our finding that NLS1s are
consistently radio-quiet, with a radio-loud fraction of 0%-6%, which is
significantly lower than the 10%-20% observed in the general quasar population.
By analogy with stellar-mass black holes, we argue that AGNs undergo a state
transition at L_bol/L_Edd~0.01. Below this value a radiatively inefficient
accretion flow effectively drives an outflow, which disappears when the flow
turns into an optically thick, geometrically thin disk, or a radiation
