Atomic oxygen studies on polymers
The purpose was to study the effects of atomic oxygen on the erosion of polymer based materials. The development of an atomic oxygen neutral beam facility using a SURFATRON surface wave launcher that can produce beam energies between 2 and 3 eV at flux levels as high as approx. 10 to the 17th power atoms/cm (2)-sec is described. Thin film dielectric materials were studied to determine recession rates and and reaction efficiencies as a function of incident beam energy and fluence. Accelerated testing was also accomplished and the values of reaction efficiency compared to available space flight data. Electron microscope photomicrographs of the samples' surface morphology were compared to flight test specimens
Formation of collective spins in frustrated clusters
Using magnetization, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements, as
well as exact calculations on realistic models, the magnetic properties of the
\lacuvo compound are characterized on a wide temperature range. At high
temperature, this oxide is well described by strongly correlated atomic =1/2
spins while decreasing the temperature it switches to a set of weakly
interacting and randomly distributed entangled pseudo spins and
. These pseudo-spins are built over frustrated clusters, similar to
the kagom\'e building block, at the vertices of a triangular superlattice, the
geometrical frustration intervening then at different scales.Comment: 10 page
Strain enhancement of superconductivity in CePd2Si2 under pressure
We report resistivity and calorimetric measurements on two single crystals of
CePd2Si2 pressurized up to 7.4 GPa. A weak uniaxial stress induced in the
pressure cell demonstrates the sensitivity of the physics to anisotropy. Stress
applied along the c-axis extends the whole phase diagram to higher pressures
and enhances the superconducting phase emerging around the magnetic
instability, with a 40% increase of the maximum superconducting temperature,
Tc, and a doubled pressure range. Calorimetric measurements demonstrate the
bulk nature of the superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Analysis of hydrogen-rich magnetic white dwarfs detected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We model the structure of the surface magnetic fields of the hydrogen-rich
white dwarfs in the SDSS. We have calculated a grid of state-of-the-art
theoretical optical spectra of hydrogen-rich magnetic white dwarfs with
magnetic field strengths between 1 MG and 1200 MG for different angles, and for
effective temperatures between 7000 K and 50000 K. We used a least-squares
minimization scheme with an evolutionary algorithm in order to find the
magnetic field geometry best fitting the observed data. We used simple centered
dipoles or dipoles which were shifted along the dipole axis to model the
coadded SDSS fiber spectrum of each object. We have analysed the spectra of all
known magnetic DAs from the SDSS (97 previously published plus 44 newly
discovered) and also investigated the statistical properties of magnetic field
geometries of this sample. The total number of known magnetic white dwarfs
already more than tripled by the SDSS and more objects are expected from a more
systematic search. The magnetic fields span a range between ~1 and 900 MG. Our
results further support the claim that Ap/Bp population is insufficient in
generating the numbers and field strength distributions of the observed MWDs,
and either another source of progenitor types or binary evolution is needed.
Moreover clear indications for non-centered dipoles exist in about ~50% of the
objects which is consistent with the magnetic field distribution observed in

Technique for producing highly planar Si/SiO0.64Ge0.36/Si metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistor channels
Si/Si0.64Ge0.36/Si heterostructures have been grown at low temperature (450 °C) to avoid the strain-induced roughening observed for growth temperatures of 550 °C and above. The electrical properties of these structures are poor, and thought to be associated with grown-in point defects as indicated in positron annihilation spectroscopy. However, after an in situ annealing procedure (800 °C for 30 min) the electrical properties dramatically improve, giving an optimum 4 K mobility of 2500 cm2 V – 1 s – 1 for a sheet density of 6.2 × 1011 cm – 2. The low temperature growth yields highly planar interfaces, which are maintained after anneal as evidenced from transmission electron microscopy. This and secondary ion mass spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the metastably strained alloy layer can endure the in situ anneal procedure necessary for enhanced electrical properties. Further studies have shown that the layers can also withstand a 120 min thermal oxidation at 800 °C, commensurate with metal–oxide–semiconductor device fabrication
Zeeman tomography of magnetic white dwarfs. II, The quadrupole-dominated magnetic field of HE 1045-0908
We report time-resolved optical flux and circular polarization spectroscopy of the magnetic DA white dwarf HE 1045−0908 obtained with FORS1 at the ESO VLT. Considering published results, we estimate a likely rotational period of P rot 2.7 h, but cannot exclude values as high as about 9 h. Our detailed Zeeman tomographic analysis reveals a field structure which is dominated by a quadrupole and contains additional dipole and octupole contributions, and which does not depend strongly on the assumed value of the period. A good fit to the Zeeman flux and polarization spectra is obtained if all field components are centred and inclinations of their magnetic axes with respect to each other are allowed for. The fit can be slightly improved if an offset from the centre of the star is included. The prevailing surface field strength is 16 MG, but values between 10 and ∼ 75 MG do occur. We derive an effective photospheric temperature of HE 1045−0908 of T eff = 10 000 ± 1000 K. The tomographic code makes use of an extensive database of pre-computed Zeeman spectra (Paper I)
