    本論文では、語用論的概念の明示的指導が、学生が行うスピーチアクトの手助けにつながるのかということに関する予備研究を提示する。筆者は、スピーチアクトをうまく成し遂げるために、学んだ語用論的な概念の応用が求められる状況に置かれた時、日本人の学生がどのようにその知識を活用するのか調べた。今回対象としたスピーチアクトは挨拶である。この予備研究から得た結果を足がかりとし、語用論的な指導は日本人大学生にとって、意識だけでなく伝達能力を高める有益な可能性があることを詳細に研究した博士論文へと発展させた。This paper describes a pilot study that was carried out to determine whether explicit teaching of pragmatic concepts could help students better address a targeted speech act. The researcher investigated how Japanese students applied this knowledge when placed in a situation that required the application of these pragmatic concepts in order to successfully achieve the targeted speech act. In this case, the targeted speech act was greetings. The information learned in this pilot study served as a stepping stone toward a main study, developed for a PhD dissertation which explored in great detail the possible benefit of pragmatic instruction to improve not only awareness but also communicative ability for Japanese university students.departmental bulletin pape
