Negative Magnetoresistance in the Nearest-neighbor Hopping Conduction
We propose a size effect which leads to the negative magnetoresistance in
granular metal-insulator materials in which the hopping between two nearest
neighbor clusters is the main transport mechanism. We show that the hopping
probability increases with magnetic field. This is originated from the level
crossing in a few-electron cluster. Thus, the overlap of electronic states of
two neighboring clusters increases, and the negative magnetoresistance is

SLE_k: correlation functions in the coefficient problem
We apply the method of correlation functions to the coefficient problem in
stochastic geometry. In particular, we give a proof for some universal patterns
conjectured by M. Zinsmeister for the second moments of the Taylor coefficients
for special values of kappa in the whole-plane Schramm-Loewner evolution
(SLE_kappa). We propose to use multi-point correlation functions for the study
of higher moments in coefficient problem. Generalizations related to the
Levy-type processes are also considered. The exact multifractal spectrum of
considered version of the whole-plane SLE_kappa is discussed
Dimpling process in cold roll metal forming by finite element modelling and experimental validation
The dimpling process is a novel cold-roll forming process that involves dimpling of a rolled flat strip prior to the roll forming operation. This is a process undertaken to enhance the material properties and subsequent products’ structural performance while maintaining a minimum strip thickness. In order to understand the complex and interrelated nonlinear changes in contact, geometry and material properties that occur in the process, it is necessary to accurately simulate the process and validate through physical tests. In this paper, 3D non-linear finite element analysis was employed to simulate the dimpling process and mechanical testing of the subsequent dimpled sheets, in which the dimple geometry and material properties data were directly transferred from the dimpling process. Physical measurements, tensile and bending tests on dimpled sheet steel were conducted to evaluate the simulation results. Simulation of the dimpling process identified the amount of non-uniform plastic strain introduced and the manner in which this was distributed through the sheet. The plastic strain resulted in strain hardening which could correlate to the increase in the strength of the dimpled steel when compared to plain steel originating from the same coil material. A parametric study revealed that the amount of plastic strain depends upon on the process parameters such as friction and overlapping gap between the two forming rolls. The results derived from simulations of the tensile and bending tests were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The validation indicates that the finite element analysis was able to successfully simulate the dimpling process and mechanical properties of the subsequent dimpled steel products
Enhancing Consultants' IT Skills: A Reverse Mentoring Project
13-16 July 2002 Many medical students arrive with excellent IT skills and experience of mentoring their peers in secondary school. Senior clinicians, by contrast, did not grow up with the technology and often feel left behind by the IT revolution. This generation gap is often seen as a threat to the authority of clinical tutors. We have set up a reverse mentoring scheme to help consultants develop their IT skills. With a grant from the post graduate dean, we have recruited thirty medical students to act as personal trainers to thirty consultants and specialist registrars. Each participant is issued with a set of learning vouchers which enables them to purchase four hours of training and a password to access the learning resources from the project website. This paper will describe the methods used, and report on the results of this unique reverse mentoring scheme
Effect of Thermal Gradients on the Electromigration Lifetime in Power Electronics
The combined effects of electromigration and thermomigration are studied. Significantly shorter electromigration lifetimes are observed in the presence of a temperature gradient. This cannot be explained by thermomigration only, but is attributed to the effect of temperature gradient on electromigration-induced failures
Sustainable Growth and Ethics: a Study of Business Ethics in Vietnam Between Business Students and Working Adults
Sustainable growth is not only the ultimate goal of business corporations but also the primary target of local governments as well as regional and global economies. One of the cornerstones of sustainable growth is ethics. An ethical organizational culture provides support to achieve sustainable growth. Ethical leaders and employees have great potential for positive influence on decisions and behaviors that lead to sustainability. Ethical behavior, therefore, is expected of everyone in the modern workplace. As a result, companies devote many resources and training programs to make sure their employees live according to the high ethical standards. This study provides an analysis of Vietnamese business students’ level of ethical maturity based on gender, education, work experience, and ethics training. The results of data from 260 business students compared with 704 working adults in Vietnam demonstrate that students have a significantly higher level of ethical maturity. Furthermore, gender and work experience are significant factors in ethical maturity. While more educated respondents and those who had completed an ethics course did have a higher level of ethical maturity, the results were not statistically significant. Analysis of the results along with suggestions and implications are provided
Multi-Objective Gust Load Alleviation Control Designs for an Aeroelastic Wind Tunnel Demonstration Wing
This paper presents several control and gust disturbance estimation techniques applied to a mathematical model of a physical flexible wing wind tunnel model used in ongoing tests at the University of Washington Aeronautical Laboratory's Kirsten Wind Tunnel. Three methods of gust disturbance estimation are presented, followed by three control methods: LQG, Basic Multi-Objective (BMO), and a novel Multi-Objective Prediction Correction (MOPC) controller. The latter of which augments a multi-objective controller, and attempts to correct for errors in the disturbance estimate. A simplified linear simulation of the three controllers is performed and a simple MIMO stability and robustness assessment is performed. Then, the same controllers are simulated in a higher fidelity Simulink environment that captures sampling, saturation and noise effects. This preliminary analysis indicates that the BMO controller provides the best performance and largest stability margins
Kinetics of macroion coagulation induced by multivalent counterions
Due to the strong correlations between multivalent counterions condensed on a
macroion, the net macroion charge changes sign at some critical counterion
concentration. This effect is known as the charge inversion. Near this critical
concentration the macroion net charge is small. Therefore, short range
attractive forces between macroions dominate Coulomb repulsion and lead to
their coagulation. The kinetics of macroion coagulation in this range of
counterion concentrations is studied. We calculate the Coulomb barrier between
two approaching like charged macroions at a given counterion concentration. Two
different macroion shapes (spherical and rod-like) are considered. A new
"self-regulated" regime of coagulation is found. As the size of aggregates
increases, their charge and Coulomb barrier also grow and diminish the sticking
probability of aggregates. This leads to a slow, logarithmic increase of the
aggregate size with time.Comment: Some formulas correcte
Inhomogeneous magnetism in single crystalline SrCuIrO: Implications to phase-separation concepts
The single crystalline form of an insulator, SrCuIrO, is
shown to exhibit unexpectedly more than one magnetic transition (at 5 and 19 K)
with spin-glass-like magnetic susceptibility behaviour. On the basis of this
finding, viz., inhomogeneous magnetism in a chemically homogeneous material, we
propose that the idea of "phase- separation" described for manganites [1] is
more widespread in different ways. The observed experimental features enable us
to make a comparison with the predictions of a recent toy model [2] on {\it
magnetic} phase separation in an insulating environment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Standing on the shoulders of giants : Are ERP success factors relevant for EDRMS implementation?
Records management has been a central concern for organisations in both private and public sectors since the beginning of the 21st century. This new focus is due both to the introduction of laws, regulations and standards affecting corporate information management; and to the way records are changing from paper-based to “born-digital” and “made-digital”. The need for an effective automated system to manage records is now greater than ever, with Electronic Document and Records Management Systems (EDRMS) being the most likely solution. Despite their increasing popularity, however, successful uptake of such systems is not yet widespread and research into their implementation is still limited. This paper investigates the possibility of applying existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) models to EDRMS by analysing the substantial body of literature on success factors for ERP implementation, both qualitatively and quantitatively; and then comparing these with the still relatively limited literature on EDRMS.<br /
