    Thermoelectric response of Fe1+y_{1+y}Te0.6_{0.6}Se0.4_{0.4}: evidence for strong correlation and low carrier density

    We present a study of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of Fe1+y_{1+y}Te1x_{1-x}Sex_{x} extended up to 28 T. The large magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient in the optimally doped sample tracks a remarkably low normalized Fermi temperature, which, like other correlated superconductors, is only one order of magnitude larger than Tc_c. We combine our data with other experimentally measured coefficients of the system to extract a set of self-consistent parameters, which identify Fe1+y_{1+y}Te0.6_{0.6}Se0.4_{0.4} as a low-density correlated superconductor barely in the clean limit. The system is subject to strong superconducting fluctuations with a sizeable vortex Nernst signal in a wide temperature window.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure

    Some aspects of Cold Deformation studies of Al-ZrB2 composites

    In the present study Al-ZrB2 composite were made by powder metallurgy route adding different amounts of synthesized ZrB2 powder (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 wt. %). The ZrB2 powder was synthesized by using self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS). The samples of different aspect ratios (0.35, 0.5 and 0.65) were made and then sintered at 550oC under continuous argon gas atmosphere in a tubular furnace for 1 hour. The microstructure of the composites had shown that there is no chemical adhesion between Al matrix and ZrB2 reinforcement. Hardness of the composites increased with increase in the amount of ZrB2 reinforcement. The hardness of the composites increased with increase in amount of ZrB2 reinforcement. It was found that the formability stress index increased with the increase of preform fractional density and decreased with the aspect ratio. Relation between various stress ratios, axial strain and relative densities were analyzed. Statistical fitting methods are used on the curve drawn between the axial strain and the stress formability index. The compacts of lower aspect ratio and high initial preform density were found to have a very high fracture strain

    Description of Drip-Line Nuclei within Relativistic Mean-Field Plus BCS Approach

    Recently it has been demonstrated, considering Ni and Ca isotopes as prototypes, that the relativistic mean-field plus BCS (RMF+BCS) approach wherein the single particle continuum corresponding to the RMF is replaced by a set of discrete positive energy states for the calculation of pairing energy provides a good approximation to the full relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) description of the ground state properties of the drip-line neutron rich nuclei. The applicability of RMF+BCS is essentially due to the fact that the main contribution to the pairing correlations is provided by the low-lying resonant states. General validity of this approach is demonstrated by the detailed calculations for the ground state properties of the chains of isotopes of O, Ca, Ni, Zr, Sn and Pb nuclei. The TMA and NL-SH force parameter sets have been used for the effective mean-field Lagrangian. Comprehensive results for the two neutron separation energy, rms radii, single particle pairing gaps and pairing energies etc. are presented. The Ca isotopes are found to exhibit distinct features near the neutron drip line whereby it is found that further addition of neutrons causes a rapid increase in the neutron rms radius with almost no increase in the binding energy, indicating the occurrence of halos. A comparison of these results with the available experimental data and with the recent continuum relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) calculations amply demonstrates the validity and usefulness of this fast RMF+BCS approach.Comment: 59 pages, 40 figure

    Optical and Near-infrared survey of the stellar contents associated with the star-forming Complex Sh2-252

    We present the analyses of the stellar contents associated with the HII region Sh2-252 using UBVRI photometry, slit and slitless spectroscopy along with the NIR data from 2MASS for an area ~1 degree x 1 degree. We studied the sub-regions of Sh2-252 which includes four compact-HII (CHII) regions, namely A, B, C and E and two clusters NGC 2175s and Teutsch 136 (Teu 136). Of the fifteen spectroscopically observed bright stars, eight have been identified as massive members of spectral class earlier than B3. From the spectro-photometric analyses, we derived the average distance of the region as 2.4+/-0.2 kpc and the reddening of the massive members is found to vary between 0.35 to 2.1 mag. We found that NGC 2175s and Teu 136, located towards the eastern edge of the complex are the sub-clusters of Sh2-252. The stellar surface density distribution in K-band shows clustering associated with the regions A, C, E, NGC 2175s and Teu 136. We have also identified the candidate ionizing sources of the CHII regions. 61 H_alpha emission sources are identified using slitless spectroscopy. The distribution of the H_alpha emission sources and candidate YSOs with IR excess on the V/(V-I) CMD shows that a majority of them have approximate ages between 0.1 - 5 Myr and masses in the range of 0.3 - 2.5 M_sun. The CMDs of the candidate YSOs in the individual regions also show an age spread of 0.1 - 5 Myr for each of them. We calculated the KLFs for the sub-regions A, C, E, NGC 2175s and Teu 136. Within errors, the KLFs for all the sub-regions are found to be similar and comparable to that of young clusters of age < 5 Myr. We also estimated the mass functions (MFs) of the PMS sample of the individual regions in the mass range of 0.3 - 2.5 M_sun. In general, the slopes of the MFs of all the sub-regions are found comparable to the Salpeter value.Comment: published in MNRA

    Different types of X-ray bursts from GRS 1915+105 and their origin

    We report the X-ray observations of the Galactic X-ray transient source GRS 1915+105 with the PPCs of the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment(IXAE) onboard the Indian satellite IRS-P3 during 1997 June - August, which have revealed the presence of four types of intense X-ray bursts. All the observed bursts have a slow exponential rise, a sharp linear decay, and they can broadly be put in two classes: irregular and quasi-regular bursts in one class, and regular bursts in another class. The regular bursts are found to have two distinct time scales and they persist over extended durations. There is a strong correlation between the preceding quiescent time and the burst duration for the quasi-regular and irregular bursts. No such correlation is found for the regular bursts. The ratio of average flux during the burst time to the average flux during the quiescent phase is high and variable for the quasi- regular and irregular bursts while it is low and constant for the regular bursts. We suggest that the peculiar bursts that we have seen are charact- eristic of the change of state of the source. The source can switch back and forth between the low-hard state and the high-soft state near critical accretion rates in a very short time scale. A test of the model is presented using the publicly available 13-60 keV RXTE/PCA data for irregular and regular bursts concurrent with our observations.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted in APJ, emulateapj style use

    Magnetic phase diagram of Fe1.1Te1-xSex: A comparative study with the stoichiometric superconducting FeTe1-xSex system

    We report a comparative study of the series Fe1.1Te1-xSex and the stoichiometric FeTe1-xSex to bring out the difference in their magnetic, superconducting and electronic properties. The Fe1.1Te1-xSex series is found to be magnetic and its microscopic properties are elucidated through Moessbauer spectroscopy. The magnetic phase diagram of Fe1.1Te1-xSex is traced out and it shows the emergence of spin-glass state when the antiferromagnetic state is destabilized by the Se substitution. The isomer shift and quadrupolar splitting obtained from the Moessbauer spectroscopy clearly brings out the electronic differences in these two series.Comment: 6 pages, 9 figure
