Consequences of Propagating Torsion in Connection-Dynamic Theories of Gravity
We discuss the possibility of constraining theories of gravity in which the
connection is a fundamental variable by searching for observational
consequences of the torsion degrees of freedom. In a wide class of models, the
only modes of the torsion tensor which interact with matter are either a
massive scalar or a massive spin-1 boson. Focusing on the scalar version, we
study constraints on the two-dimensional parameter space characterizing the
theory. For reasonable choices of these parameters the torsion decays quickly
into matter fields, and no long-range fields are generated which could be
discovered by ground-based or astrophysical experiments.Comment: 16 pages plus one figure (plain TeX), MIT-CTP #2291. (Extraordinarily

The Occurrence of Reform Teaching Practice in Undergraduate Mathematics and Science Classes: The Students\u27 Perspective
High altitude flying
This note investigates the effect of high altitude or low atmospheric pressure upon the operation of an engine and the effect of the low pressure and lack of oxygen and of the very low temperatures upon the pilot and upon the performance of the airplane itself
Writing in your own voice: An intervention that reduces plagiarism and common writing problems in students' scientific writing.
In many of our courses, particularly laboratory courses, students are expected to engage in scientific writing. Despite various efforts by other courses and library resources, as instructors we are often faced with the frustration of student plagiarism and related writing problems. Here, we describe a simple Writing in Your Own Voice intervention designed to help students become more aware of different types of plagiarism and writing problems, avoid those problems, and practice writing in their own voice. In this article, we will introduce the types of plagiarism and writing problems commonly encountered in our molecular biology laboratory course, the intervention, and the results of our study. From the evaluation of 365 student reports, we found the intervention resulted in nearly 50% fewer instances of plagiarism and common writing problems. We also observed significantly fewer instances of severe plagiarism (e.g. several sentences copied from an external source). In addition, we find that the effects last for several weeks after the students complete the intervention assignment. This assignment is particularly easy to implement and can be a very useful tool for teaching students how to write in their own voices. © 2019 International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 47(5):589-598, 2019
An electromechanical attenuator/actuator for Space Station docking
The development of a docking system for aerospace vehicles has identified the need for reusable and variably controlled attenuators/actuators for energy absorption and compliance. One approach to providing both the attenuator and the actuator functions is by way of an electromechanical attenuator/actuator (EMAA) as opposed to a hydraulic system. The use of the electromechanical devices is considered to be more suitable for a space environment because of the absence of contamination from hydraulic fluid leaks and because of the cost effectiveness of maintenance. A smart EMAA that uses range/rate/attitude sensor information to preadjust a docking interface to eliminate misalignments and to minimize contact and stroking forces is described. A prototype EMAA was fabricated and is being tested and evaluated. Results of preliminary testing and analysis already performed have established confidence that this concept is feasible and will provide the desired reliability and low maintenance for repetitive long term operation typical of Space Station requirements
Solution of the dispersionless Hirota equations
The dispersionless differential Fay identity is shown to be equivalent to a
kernel expansion providing a universal algebraic characterization and solution
of the dispersionless Hirota equations. Some calculations based on D-bar data
of the action are also indicated.Comment: Late
