    Power changes of EEG signals associated with muscle fatigue: The root mean square analysis of EEG bands

    The paper reports a research conducted to determine changes in the electrical activity of the contralateral motor cortex of the brain that drives the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the right adductor pollicis muscle (APM) after fatigue. The power changes of EEG signals after muscle fatigue were computed. In twenty-five subjects, EEG signals from the left motor cortical area (C3, FC3) were recorded simultaneously with EMG signals from the right APM, before and after exercise-induced fatigue. The root mean square (RMS) of the EEG bands (alpha, beta, and gamma) was calculated to determine the power changes of the EEG signals after right APM fatigue. The mean RMS of the EEG bands were increased during MVC of the fatigued right APM compared to the RMS value during relaxation before fatigue (p<0.05). The RMS value was seen to be greatest in the beta band, and lowest in the gamma band. The observed increase in the RMS of EEG bands during MVC of the fatigued right APM suggest an increase in the EEG signal power, which could reflect an increase in energy needed by the motor cortex to perform MVC in fatigued muscles, which might give an indication of neural fatigue in the motor cortex

    International Fitness Scale—IFIS: Validity and association with health‐related quality of life in pregnant women

    *Aim: This study aimed (a) to examine the construct validity of the International Fitness Scale (IFIS) to discriminate between different objectively measured physical fitness levels in pregnant women and (b) to assess the extent to which IFIS is able to discriminate between pregnant women with different levels of health‐related quality of life (HRQoL). *Method: A total of 159 pregnant women were involved in the GESTAtion and FITness project: 106 pregnant women (mean age 32.7, SD 4.4 years) were included. Self‐reported physical fitness—that is, cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, flexibility, and overall fitness—was assessed with the IFIS. Physical fitness was objectively measured using the Bruce test, the handgrip strength test and the backscratch test. The HRQoL was assessed with the 36‐item Short Form Health Survey (SF‐36). Higher self‐reported physical fitness measured with IFIS was associated with higher objectively measured physical fitness (P < .05). *Results: There was a linear association so that higher self‐reported physical fitness (ie, IFIS; regardless of the fitness component) was related to greater General Health dimension scores (P < .05). Moreover, higher self‐reported physical fitness (all components except muscular strength) was associated with better Physical Functioning, lower Bodily Pain and higher Vitality scores (ie, SF‐36 components). This linear trend was not seen for objectively measured physical fitness. *Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that IFIS might be a useful tool for identifying pregnant women with low or very low physical fitness and with low quality of life health‐related. Further research should elucidate whether IFIS can identify women with pregnancy complications before it can be implemented in clinical practice

    Late-Onset Sepsis Mortality among Preterm Infants: Beyond Time to First Antibiotics

    Objective: To investigate the impact of timing, in vitro activity and appropriateness of empirical antimicrobials on the outcome of late-onset sepsis among preterm very low birth weight infants that are at high risk of developing meningitis. Study design: This retrospective study included 83 LOS episodes in 73 very low birth weight infants born at ≤32 weeks’ gestation with positive blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid culture or polymerase chain reaction at &gt;72 h of age. To define the appropriateness of empirical antimicrobials we considered both their in vitro activity and their ideal delivery through the blood-brain barrier when meningitis was confirmed or not ruled out through a lumbar puncture. The primary outcome was sepsis-related mortality. The secondary outcome was the development of brain lesions. Timing, in vitro activity and appropriateness of empirical antimicrobials, were compared between fatal and non-fatal episodes. Uni- and multi-variable analyses were carried out for the primary outcome. Results: Time to antibiotics and in vitro activity of empirical antimicrobials were similar between fatal and non-fatal cases. By contrast, empirical antimicrobials were appropriate in a lower proportion of fatal episodes of late-onset sepsis (4/17, 24%) compared to non-fatal episodes (39/66, 59%). After adjusting for Gram-negative vs. Gram-positive pathogen and for other supportive measures (time to volume administration), inappropriate empirical antimicrobials remained associated with mortality (aOR, 10.3; 95% CI, 1.4–76.8, p = 0.023), while timing to first antibiotics was not (aOR 0.9; 95% CI, 0.7–1.2, p = 0.408; AUC = 0.88). The association between appropriate antimicrobials and brain sequelae was also significant (p = 0.024). Conclusions: The risk of sepsis-related mortality and brain sequelae in preterm very low birth weight infants is significantly associated with the appropriateness (rather than the timing and the in vitro activity) of empirical antimicrobials. Until meningitis is ruled out through lumbar puncture, septic very low birth weight infants at high risk of mortality should receive empiric antimicrobials with high delivery through the blood-brain barrier

    Is type of work associated with physical activity and sedentary behaviour in women with fibromyalgia A cross-sectional study from the al-Ándalus project

    Objectives To analyse the association between the type of work (productive vs reproductive work) and the levels of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in women with fibromyalgia. Method This cross-sectional study involved 258 women with fibromyalgia from southern Spain. Of them, 55% performed reproductive work (unpaid, associated with caregiving and domestic roles) exclusively, while 45% had productive job (remunerated, that results in goods or services). Physical activity of light, moderate and vigorous intensity in the leisure time, at home, at work, and totally were measured through the leisure time physical activity instrument and with the physical activity at home and work instrument, respectively. Sedentary behaviour was measured by the Sedentary Behaviour Questionnaire. Results After adjusting for age, fat percentage, education level and marital status, the multivariate analysis of covariance model informed the existence of significant differences between type of work groups (p<0.001).     The Evolution of Expressing and Exchanging Cyber-Investigation Information in a Standardized Form

    The growing number of investigations involving digital traces from various data sources is driving the demand for a standard way to represent and exchange pertinent information. Enabling automated combination and correlation of cyber-investigation information from multiple systems or organizations enables more efficient and comprehensive analysis, reducing the risk of mistakes and missed opportunities. These needs are being met by the evolving open-source, community-developed specification language called CASE, the Cyber-investigation Analysis Standard Expression. CASE leverages the Unified Cyber Ontology (UCO), which abstracts and expresses concepts that are common across multiple domains. This paper introduces CASE and UCO, explaining how they improve upon prior related work. The value of fully-structured data, representing provenance, and action lifecycles are discussed. The guiding principles of CASE and UCO are presented, and illustrative examples of CASE are provided using the default JSON-LD serialization

    The IFMIF-DONES Facility is a unique first-class scientific infrastructure whose construction is foreseen in Granada, Spain, in the coming years. Strong integration efforts are being made at the current project phase aiming at harmonizing the ongoing design of the different and complex Systems of the facility. The consolidation of the Diagnostics and Instrumentation, transversal across many of them, is a key element of this purpose. A top-down strategy is proposed for a systematic Diagnostics Review and Requirement definition, putting emphasis in the one-of-a-kind instruments necessary by the operational particularities of some of the Systems, as well as to the harsh environment that they shall survive. In addition, other transversal aspects such as the ones related to Safety and Machine Protection and their respective requirements shall be also considered. The goal is therefore to advance further and solidly in the respective designs, identify problems in advance, and steer the Diagnostics development and validation campaigns that will be required. The present work provides an overview of this integration strategy as well as a description of some of the most challenging Diagnostics and Instruments within the facility, including several proposed techniques currently under study
