Abstract
The objective was to evaluate the accuracy of predicting 24-hour milk yield and composition from a single morning (AM) or evening (PM) milk weight and composition. A calibration dataset of 37,481 test-day records with both AM and PM yields and composition was used to generate the prediction equations; equations were validated using 4,644 test-day records. Prediction models were developed within stage of lactation and parity while accounting for the inter-milking time interval. The mean correlation between the predicted 24-hour yields and composition of milk, fat and protein and the respective actual values was 0.97 when based on just an AM milk yield and composition with a mean correlation of 0.95 when based on just a PM milk yield and composition. The regression of predicted 24-hour yield and composition on the respective actual values varied from 0.97 to 1.01 with the exception of 24-hour fat percentage predicted from a PM sample (1.06). A single AM sample is useful to predict 24-hour milk yield and composition when the milking interval is known
Single-leg airline revenue management with overbooking
Airline revenue management is about identifying the maximum revenue seat allocation policies. Since a major loss in revenue results from cancellations and no-show passengers, over the years overbooking has received a significant attention in the literature. In this study, we propose new models for static and dynamic single-leg overbooking problems. In the static case, we introduce computationally tractable models that give upper and lower bounds for the optimal expected revenue. In the dynamic case, we propose a new dynamic programming model, which is based on two streams of arrivals. The first stream corresponds to the booking requests and the second stream represents the cancellations. We also conduct simulation experiments to illustrate the proposed models and the solution methods
Supergravity Inflation Free from Harmful Relics
We present a realistic supergravity inflation model which is free from the
overproduction of potentially dangerous relics in cosmology, namely moduli and
gravitinos which can lead to the inconsistencies with the predictions of baryon
asymmetry and nucleosynthesis. The radiative correction turns out to play a
crucial role in our analysis which raises the mass of supersymmetry breaking
field to intermediate scale. We pay a particular attention to the non-thermal
production of gravitinos using the non-minimal Kahler potential we obtained
from loop correction. This non-thermal gravitino production however is
diminished because of the relatively small scale of inflaton mass and small
amplitudes of hidden sector fields.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, 1 eps figure, references added, conclusion section

Relaxing the Cosmological Moduli Problem
Typically the moduli fields acquire mass m =C H in the early universe, which
shifts the position of the minimum of their effective potential and leads to an
excessively large energy density of the oscillating moduli fields at the later
stages of the evolution of the universe. This constitutes the cosmological
moduli problem, or Polonyi field problem. We show that the cosmological moduli
problem can be solved or at least significantly relaxed in the theories in
which C >> 1, as well as in some models with C << 1.Comment: 9 pages, 3 Postscript figure
String Theory and Cosmology
We discuss the main cosmological implications of considering string-loop
effects and a potential for the dilaton in the lowest order string effective
action. Our framework is based on the effective model arising from regarding
homogeneous and isotropic dilaton, metric and Yang-Mills field configurations.
The issues of inflation, entropy crisis and the Polonyi problem as well as the
problem of the cosmological constant are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, plain Tex, no figure
String Theory and Inflation
String theory abounds with light scalar fields (the dilaton and various
moduli) which create a host of observational problems, and notably some serious
cosmological difficulties similar to the ones associated with the Polonyi field
in the earliest versions of spontaneously broken supergravity. We show that all
these problems are naturally avoided if a recently introduced mechanism for
fixing the vacuum expectation values of the dilaton and/or moduli is at work.
We study both the classical evolution and the quantum fluctuations of such
scalar fields during a primordial inflationary era and find that the results
are naturally compatible with observational facts. In this model, dilatons or
moduli within a very wide range of masses (which includes the SUSY-breaking
favored 1 TeV value and extends up to the Planck scale) qualify to define a
novel type of essentially stable ultra-weakly interacting massive particles
able to provide enough mass density to close the universeComment: 25 page
Supersymmetry, Axions and Cosmology
Various authors have noted that in particular models, the upper bound on the
axion decay constant may not hold. We point out that within supersymmetry, this
is a generic issue. For large decay constants, the cosmological problems
associated with the axion's scalar partner are far more severe than those of
the axion. We survey a variety of models, both for the axion multiplet and for
cosmology, and find that in many cases where the cosmological problems of the
saxion are solved, the usual upper bound on the axion is significantly relaxed.
We discuss, more generally, the cosmological issues raised by the pseudoscalar
members of moduli multiplets, and find that they are potentially quite severe.Comment: 27 pages, published version, some discussions clarifie
Naturally Large Cosmological Neutrino Asymmetries in the MSSM
A large neutrino asymmetry is an interesting possibility for cosmology, which
can have significant observable consequences for nucleosynthesis and the cosmic
microwave background. However, although it is a possibility, there is no
obvious reason to expect the neutrino asymmetry to be observably large. Here we
note that if the baryon asymmetry originates via the Affleck-Dine mechanism
along a d=4 flat direction of the MSSM scalar potential and if the lepton
asymmetry originates via Affleck-Dine leptogenesis along a d=6 direction,
corresponding to the lowest dimension directions conserving R-parity, then the
ratio n_{L}/n_{B} is naturally in the range 10^{8}-10^{9}. As a result, a
potentially observable neutrino asymmetry is correlated with a baryon asymmetry
of the order of 10^{-10}.Comment: 10 pages LaTeX. Final version to be published in Physical Review

Cosmology with a TeV mass GUT Higgs
The most natural way to break the GUT gauge symmetry is with a Higgs field
whose vacuum expectation value is of order 10^{16}\,\mbox{GeV} but whose mass
is of order to 10^3\,\mbox{GeV}. This can lead to a cosmological
history radically different from what is usually assumed to have occurred
between the standard inflationary and nucleosynthesis epochs, which may solve
the gravitino and Polonyi/moduli problems in a natural way.Comment: 4 pages, revte
