Threshold concepts and introductory electronics
Electronics and circuit theory are acknowledged as troublesome subjects when
first introduced to students. This leads to low student retention into later electronics courses, especially in universities that offer a common first year where students are free to change streams after the first year. We report on a detailed study of the application of Threshold Concept Theory to an introductory electronics course. We identify some Threshold Concepts, explicit and tacit. We postulate that a high density of Threshold Concepts accounts for the reputation for troublesome learning in, and low retention following, these courses. We further suggest that the bimodal distribution of marks that is commonly observed in electronics teaching is a hallmark of a Thresold Concept. This may have significant impact on assessment
An Integrated Picture of Star Formation, Metallicity Evolution, and Galactic Stellar Mass Assembly
We present an integrated study of star formation and galactic stellar mass
assembly from z=0.05-1.5 and galactic metallicity evolution from z=0.05-0.9
using a very large and highly spectroscopically complete sample selected by
rest-frame NIR bolometric flux in the GOODS-N. We assume a Salpeter IMF and fit
Bruzual & Charlot (2003) models to compute the galactic stellar masses and
extinctions. We determine the expected formed stellar mass density growth rates
produced by star formation and compare them with the growth rates measured from
the formed stellar mass functions by mass interval. We show that the growth
rates match if the IMF is slightly increased from the Salpeter IMF at
intermediate masses (~10 solar masses). We investigate the evolution of galaxy
color, spectral type, and morphology with mass and redshift and the evolution
of mass with environment. We find that applying extinction corrections is
critical when analyzing galaxy colors; e.g., nearly all of the galaxies in the
green valley are 24um sources, but after correcting for extinction, the bulk of
the 24um sources lie in the blue cloud. We find an evolution of the
metallicity-mass relation corresponding to a decrease of 0.21+/-0.03 dex
between the local value and the value at z=0.77 in the 1e10-1e11 solar mass
range. We use the metallicity evolution to estimate the gas mass of the
galaxies, which we compare with the galactic stellar mass assembly and star
formation histories. Overall, our measurements are consistent with a galaxy
evolution process dominated by episodic bursts of star formation and where star
formation in the most massive galaxies (>1e11 solar masses) ceases at z<1.5

‘Getting stuck’ in analogue electronics: Threshold concepts as an explanatory model
Could the challenge of mastering threshold concepts be a potential factor that influences a student's decision to continue in electronics engineering? This was the question that led to a collaborative research project between educational researchers and the Faculty of Engineering in a New Zealand university. This paper deals exclusively with the qualitative data from this project, which was designed to investigate the high attrition rate of students taking introductory electronics in a New Zealand university. The affordances of the various teaching opportunities and the barriers that students perceived are examined in the light of recent international research in the area of threshold concepts and transformational learning. Suggestions are made to help students move forward in their thinking, without compromising the need for maintaining the element of intellectual uncertainty that is crucial for tertiary teaching. A Flux-Limited Sample of z~1 Ly-alpha Emitting Galaxies in the CDFS
We describe a method for obtaining a flux-limited sample of Ly-alpha emitters
from GALEX grism data. We show that the multiple GALEX grism images can be
converted into a three-dimensional (two spatial axes and one wavelength axis)
data cube. The wavelength slices may then be treated as narrowband images and
searched for emission-line galaxies. For the GALEX NUV grism data, the method
provides a Ly-alpha flux-limited sample over the redshift range z=0.67-1.16. We
test the method on the Chandra Deep Field South field, where we find 28
Ly-alpha emitters with faint continuum magnitudes (NUV>22) that are not present
in the GALEX pipeline sample. We measure the completeness by adding artificial
emitters and measuring the fraction recovered. We find that we have an 80%
completeness above a Ly-alpha flux of 10^-15 erg/cm^2/s. We use the UV spectra
and the available X-ray data and optical spectra to estimate the fraction of
active galactic nuclei in the selection. We report the first detection of a
giant Ly-alpha blob at z<1, though we find that these objects are much less
common at z=1 than at z=3. Finally, we compute limits on the z~1 Ly-alpha
luminosity function and confirm that there is a dramatic evolution in the
luminosity function over the redshift range z=0-1.Comment: 18 pages, in press at The Astrophysical Journa
A new multi-modal dataset for human affect analysis
In this paper we present a new multi-modal dataset of spontaneous three way human interactions. Participants were recorded in an unconstrained environment at various locations during a sequence of debates in a video conference, Skype style arrangement. An additional depth modality was introduced, which permitted the capture of 3D information in addition to the video and audio signals. The dataset consists of 16 participants and is subdivided into 6 unique sections. The dataset was manually annotated on a continuously scale across 5 different affective dimensions including arousal, valence, agreement, content and interest.
The annotation was performed by three human annotators with the ensemble average calculated for use in the dataset. The corpus enables the analysis of human affect during conversations in a real life scenario. We first briefly reviewed the existing affect dataset and the methodologies
related to affect dataset construction, then we detailed how our unique dataset was constructed
Deep HI observations of the surroundings of ram pressure stripped Virgo spiral galaxies - Where is the stripped gas?
Deep Effelsberg 100-m HI observations of 5 HI deficient Virgo spiral galaxies
are presented. No new extended HI tail is found in these galaxies. The already
known HI tail north of NGC 4388 does not significantly extend further than a
WSRT image has shown. Based on the absence of HI tails in a sample of 6 Virgo
spiral galaxies and a balance of previous detections of extraplanar gas in the
targeted galaxies we propose a global picture where the outer gas disk (beyond
the optical radius R_25) is removed much earlier than expected by the classical
ram pressure criterion. Based on the two-phase nature of atomic hydrogen
located in a galactic disk, we argue that the warm diffuse HI in the outer
galactic disk is evaporated much more rapidly than the cold dense HI.
Therefore, after a ram pressure stripping event we can only observe atomic
hydrogen which was cold and dense before it was removed from the galactic disk.
This global picture is consistent with all available observations. We detect
between 0.3% and 20% of the stripped mass assuming an initially non-deficient
galaxy and between 3% and 70% of the stripped mass assuming an initially HI
deficient galaxy (def=0.4). Under the latter assumption we estimate an
evaporation rate by dividing the missing mass by the estimated time to peak ram
pressure from dynamical simulations. We find evaporation rates between 10 and

Galaxy Halo Masses from Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing
We present measurements of the extended dark halo profiles of bright early
type galaxies at redshifts 0.1 to 0.9 obtained via galaxy-galaxy lensing
analysis of images taken at the CFHT using the UH8K CCD mosaic camera. Six half
degree fields were observed for a total of 2 hours each in I and V, resulting
in catalogs containing ~20 000 galaxies per field. We used V-I color and I
magnitude to select bright early type galaxies as the lens galaxies, yielding a
sample of massive lenses with fairly well determined redshifts and absolute
magnitudes M ~ M_* \pm 1. We paired these with faint galaxies lying at angular
distances 20" to 60", corresponding to physical radii of 26 to 77 kpc (z = 0.1)
and 105 to 315 kpc (z = 0.9), and computed the mean tangential shear of the
faint galaxies. The shear falls off with radius roughly as expected for flat
rotation curve halos. The shear values were weighted in proportion to the
square root of the luminosity of the lens galaxy. Our results give a value for
the average mean rotation velocity of an L_* galaxy halo at r~50-200 kpc of v_*
= 238^{+27}_{-30} km per sec for a flat lambda (Omega_m0 = 0.3, Omega_l0 = 0.7)
cosmology (v_* = 269^{+34}_{-39} km per sec for Einstein-de Sitter), and with
little evidence for evolution with redshift. We compare to halo masses measured
by other groups/techniques. We find a mass-to-light ratio of ~121\pm28h(r/100
kpc) and these halos constitute Omega ~0.04 \pm 0.01(r/100 kpc) of closure

Cost-effectiveness of eplerenone in patients with systolic heart failure and mild symptoms
Aim In the Eplerenone in Mild Patients Hospitalization and Survival Study in Heart Failure (EMPHASIS-HF), aldosterone blockade with eplerenone decreased mortality and hospitalisation in patients with mild symptoms (New York Heart Association class II) and chronic systolic heart failure (HF). The present study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of eplerenone in the treatment of these patients in the UK and Spain.<p></p>
Methods and results Results from the EMPHASIS-HF trial were used to develop a discrete-event simulation model estimating lifetime direct costs and effects (life years and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) gained) of the addition of eplerenone to standard care among patients with chronic systolic HF and mild symptoms. Eplerenone plus standard care compared with standard care alone increased lifetime direct costs per patient by £4284 for the UK and €7358 for Spain, with additional quality-adjusted life expectancy of 1.22 QALYs for the UK and 1.33 QALYs for Spain. Mean lifetime costs were £3520 per QALY in the UK and €5532 per QALY in Spain. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis suggested a 100% likelihood of eplerenone being regarded as cost-effective at a willingness-to-pay threshold of £20 000 per QALY (UK) or €30 000 per QALY (Spain).<p></p>
Conclusions By currently accepted standards of value for money, the addition of eplerenone to optimal medical therapy for patients with chronic systolic HF and mild symptoms is likely to be cost-effective.<p></p>
