Composite components on commercial aircraft
Commercial aircraft manufacturers are making production commitments to composite structure for future aircraft and modifications to current production aircraft. Flight service programs with advanced composites sponsored by NASA during the past 10 years are described. Approximately 2.5 million total composite component flight hours have been accumulated since 1970 on both commercial transports and helicopters. Design concepts with significant mass savings were developed, appropriate inspection and maintenance procedures were established, and satisfactory service was achieved for the various composite components. A major NASA/U.S. industry technology program to reduce fuel consumption of commercial transport aircraft through the use of advanced composites was undertaken. Ground and flight environmental effects on the composite materials used in the flight service programs supplement the flight service evaluation
Worldwide flight and ground-based exposure of composite materials
The long-term durability of those advanced composite materials which are applicable to aircraft structures was discussed. The composite components of various military and commercial aircraft and helicopters were reviewed. Both ground exposure and flight service were assessed in terms of their impact upon composite structure durability. The ACEE Program is mentioned briefly
Buckling of conical shell with local imperfections
Small geometric imperfections in thin-walled shell structures can cause large reductions in buckling strength. Most imperfections found in structures are neither axisymmetric nor have the shape of buckling modes but rather occur locally. This report presents the results of a study of the effect of local imperfections on the critical buckling load of a specific axially compressed thin-walled conical shell. The buckling calculations were performed by using a two-dimensional shell analysis program referred to as the STAGS (Structural Analysis of General Shells) computer code, which has no axisymmetry restrictions. Results show that the buckling load found from a bifurcation buckling analysis is highly dependent on the circumferential arc length of the imperfection type studied. As the circumferential arc length of the imperfection is increased, a reduction of up to 50 percent of the critical load of the perfect shell can occur. The buckling load of the cone with an axisymmetric imperfections is nearly equal to the buckling load of imperfections which extended 60 deg or more around the circumference, but would give a highly conservative estimate of the buckling load of a shell with an imperfection of a more local nature
Aberrational Effects for Shadows of Black Holes
In this paper, we discuss how the shadow of a Kerr black hole depends on the
motion of the observer. In particular, we derive an analytical formula for the
boundary curve of the shadow for an observer moving with given four-velocity at
given Boyer--Lindquist coordinates. We visualize the shadow for various values

Identifying the Roles and Challenges of Female Agricultural Teachers Employed in Illinois: A Descriptive Study
In 1980, one of the first female high school agriculture teachers opened the door to her classroom at Arthur High School, Arthur, Illinois. Since that time, the number of female high school agriculture teachers has grown significantly. A descriptive study was conducted to identify and describe the roles and challenges of female high school agricultural teachers employed in Illinois. The results of the study can be used as a preparation tool for those females who decide to pursue agricultural education as a career, and can be used to encourage more female students to enter this challenging career. This study also describes the demographics, background, and support given to female teachers of agriculture in Illinois prior to and after college. Almost half the current female high school agriculture teachers are under the age of 30, and 52% of these teachers are instructors of Agricultural Mechanization, a once male-dominated area of instruction
Learning Disabled Student Needs Met Through Curriculum Redesign of the Illinois Agricultural Education Core Curriculum
This quasi–experimental pilot study included agricultural education students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) in five high schools in the federally designated economically distressed area called the Illinois Delta Region. A unit of instruction taken from the existing 165 units of The Illinois Core Curriculum for Agriculture was redesigned in a manner appropriate to SLD students. Students from the five selected programs were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Results from pre– and posttests in this study found the redesigned curriculum for SLD students effectively increased learning for both SLD and traditional students
A Descriptive Study on the Preparation of Student Teachers to Work with Diverse Populations
If the agricultural education profession is to attract a more diverse audience to pursue agriculture as a viable career path, the secondary teacher education pathway must be reevaluated. The purpose of the study was to describe the degree to which the involved agricultural education programs prepared their students to work with diverse populations. The study also examined attitudes and beliefs of the student teachers regarding diversity. The results of the study suggest that this group of student teachers was not adequately exposed to diversity neither in their student teaching experience nor in their university preparation. To assist the national agricultural education goal of diversity in agriculture, a national study should be conducted to determine if there is a correlation between minority enrollment in agriculture and the race and gender of the teacher educator
Coherent control of indirect excitonic qubits in optically driven quantum dot molecules
We propose an optoelectronic scheme to define and manipulate an indirect
neutral exciton qubit within a quantum dot molecule. We demonstrate coherent
dynamics of indirect excitons resilient against decoherence effects, including
direct exciton spontaneous recombination. For molecules with large interdot
separation, the exciton dressed spectrum yields an often overlooked avoided
crossing between spatially indirect exciton states. Effective two level system
Hamiltonians are extracted by Feshbach projection over the multilevel exciton
configurations. An adiabatic manipulation of the qubit states is devised using
time dependent electric field sweeps. The exciton dynamics yields the necessary
conditions for qubit initialization and near unitary rotations in the
picosecond time scale, driven by the system internal dynamics. Despite the
strong influence of laser excitation, charge tunneling, and interdot
dipole-dipole interactions, the effective relaxation time of indirect excitons
is much longer than the direct exciton spontaneous recombination time,
rendering indirect excitons as potential elemental qubits in more complex

Locating the intense interstellar scattering towards the inner Galaxy
We use VLBA+VLA observations to measure the sizes of the scatter-broadened
images of 6 of the most heavily scattered known pulsars: 3 within the Galactic
Centre (GC) and 3 elsewhere in the inner Galactic plane. By combining the
measured sizes with temporal pulse broadening data from the literature and
using the thin-screen approximation, we locate the scattering medium along the
line of sight to these 6 pulsars. At least two scattering screens are needed to
explain the observations of the GC sample. We show that the screen inferred by
previous observations of SGR J1745-2900 and Sgr A*, which must be located far
from the GC, falls off in strength on scales < 0.2 degree. A second scattering
component closer to (< 2 kpc) or even (tentatively) within (< 700 pc) the GC
produces most or all of the temporal broadening observed in the other GC
pulsars. Outside the GC, the scattering locations for all three pulsars are ~2
kpc from Earth, consistent with the distance of the Carina-Sagittarius or
Scutum spiral arm. For each object the 3D scattering origin coincides with a
known HII region (and in one case also a supernova remnant), suggesting that
such objects preferentially cause the intense interstellar scattering seen
towards the Galactic plane. We show that the HII regions should contribute >
25% of the total dispersion measure (DM) towards these pulsars, and calculate
reduced DM distances. Those distances for other pulsars lying behind HII
