    Married women´s labor force participation in developing counties: The case of México

    This study investigates the effect of cultural and structural features of Mexico on women's labor force determination. Our findings show that the major factors influencing married women's participation in the formal sector in Mexico are similar to those affecting married women's participation in industrialized countries. However, the study indicates that factors driving the decision Mexican women to work in the informal sector may be different from those driving decisions to work in the formal sector. An important result is that the reservation wage for married women appears to be higher in Mexico than in more industrialized countries.

    Shock waves in two-dimensional granular flow: effects of rough walls and polydispersity

    We have studied the two-dimensional flow of balls in a small angle funnel, when either the side walls are rough or the balls are polydisperse. As in earlier work on monodisperse flows in smooth funnels, we observe the formation of kinematic shock waves/density waves. We find that for rough walls the flows are more disordered than for smooth walls and that shock waves generally propagate more slowly. For rough wall funnel flow, we show that the shock velocity and frequency obey simple scaling laws. These scaling laws are consistent with those found for smooth wall flow, but here they are cleaner since there are fewer packing-site effects and we study a wider range of parameters. For pipe flow (parallel side walls), rough walls support many shock waves, while smooth walls exhibit fewer or no shock waves. For funnel flows of balls with varying sizes, we find that flows with weak polydispersity behave qualitatively similar to monodisperse flows. For strong polydispersity, scaling breaks down and the shock waves consist of extended areas where the funnel is blocked completely.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures; accepted for PR

    Étude physico-chimique des cendres de quelques végétaux du Benin utilisées dans la fabrication du savon «ACOTO»

    Elaeis guineensis, Grossypium arborium, Anogeissus leiocarpus et Acacia sieberiana sont des matériaux végétaux dont incinérées, certaines parties sont utilisées dans la préparation du savon artisanal «ACOTO» au Bénin. Notre travail a pour objectif de déterminer la durée optimale de conservation du substrat de cendres de ces matériaux végétaux utilisés pour l’obtention d’une meilleure qualité de savon puis de faire une caractérisation physico-chimique des cendres de ces matériaux végétaux. Les analyses physico-chimiques ont montré que tous les substrats de cendres issues de ces matériaux végétaux sont alcalins (7,35< pH <10,02) et contiennent pour la plupart une concentration élevée en K+, ce qui confirme leur alcalinité. Les analyses révèlent également que la durée optimale de conservation de tous les substrats sauf ceux de la cendre des tiges de Acacia sieberiana et de la cendre du tronc de Elaeis guineensis est environ d’une (1) heure avant la préparation du savon.Mots clés: Savon «ACOTO», Elaeis guineensis, Grossypium arborium, Anogeissus leiocarpus, Acacia sieberiana, Béni

    Grain Dynamics in a Two-dimensional Granular Flow

    We have used particle tracking methods to study the dynamics of individual balls comprising a granular flow in a small-angle two-dimensional funnel. We statistically analyze many ball trajectories to examine the mechanisms of shock propagation. In particular, we study the creation of, and interactions between, shock waves.     Methods to study splicing from high-throughput RNA Sequencing data

    The development of novel high-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods for RNA (RNA-Seq) has provided a very powerful mean to study splicing under multiple conditions at unprecedented depth. However, the complexity of the information to be analyzed has turned this into a challenging task. In the last few years, a plethora of tools have been developed, allowing researchers to process RNA-Seq data to study the expression of isoforms and splicing events, and their relative changes under different conditions. We provide an overview of the methods available to study splicing from short RNA-Seq data. We group the methods according to the different questions they address: 1) Assignment of the sequencing reads to their likely gene of origin. This is addressed by methods that map reads to the genome and/or to the available gene annotations. 2) Recovering the sequence of splicing events and isoforms. This is addressed by transcript reconstruction and de novo assembly methods. 3) Quantification of events and isoforms. Either after reconstructing transcripts or using an annotation, many methods estimate the expression level or the relative usage of isoforms and/or events. 4) Providing an isoform or event view of differential splicing or expression. These include methods that compare relative event/isoform abundance or isoform expression across two or more conditions. 5) Visualizing splicing regulation. Various tools facilitate the visualization of the RNA-Seq data in the context of alternative splicing. In this review, we do not describe the specific mathematical models behind each method. Our aim is rather to provide an overview that could serve as an entry point for users who need to decide on a suitable tool for a specific analysis.     Transport urbain au Benin et pollution atmosphérique: évaluation quantitative de certains polluants chimiques de Cotonou

    L’atmosphère dans la ville de Cotonou au Bénin en Afrique de l’Ouest, se caractérise par la présence de poussières soulevées au cours de la circulation sur toutes les voies et presque partout dans cette ville, par d’épaisses fumées opaques, en particulier au niveau des grandes artères et des carrefours. Ce phénomène est lié à une utilisation des moto à deux roues notamment les taxis–moto appelés « Zémidjan » dont le nombre en 2005 est estimé à 96.095 selon les statistiques de la mairie de Cotonou. Le présent article vise l’évaluation quantitative de certains polluants chimiques supposés nocifs et ayant fait l’objet de réglementation au niveau du Bénin. Il met en relief le rôle joué par le transport dans l’émission de ces polluants gazeux. A cet effet, les taux dans l’air du monoxyde de carbone (CO), du dioxyde d’azote (NO2), du dioxyde de soufre (SO2) et du plomb ont été déterminés. Le monoxyde de carbone et le dioxyde d’azote donnent des taux dépassant souvent le seuil retenu par la réglementation Béninoise. Le carrefour du grand marché Tokpa de Cotonou présente les plus forts taux mesurés avec un maximum de 214,7 mg/m3 de CO. La quantité du plomb fixée varie avec le temps d’exposition.     Fasting heat production and metabolic BW in group-housed broilers

    Fasting heat production (FHP) is used for characterizing the basal metabolic rate of animals and the corresponding maintenance energy requirements and in the calculation of net energy value of feeds. In broilers, the most recent FHP estimates were obtained in the 1980s in slow-growing and fatter birds than nowadays. The FHP values (n=73; six experiments) measured in 3 to 6-week-old modern lines of broilers weighing 0.6 to 2.8 kg and growing at 80 to 100 g/day were used to update these literature values. Each measurement was obtained in a group of fasting broilers (5 to 14 birds) kept in a respiration chamber for at least 24 h. The FHP estimate corresponds to the asymptotic heat production corrected for zero physical activity obtained by modeling the decrease in heat production during the fasting day. The compilation of these data indicates that FHP was linearly related to the BW0.70 (in kg), which can be considered as the metabolic BW of modern broilers. The 0.70 exponent differs from the conventional value of 0.75 used for mature animals. The FHP per kg of BW0.70 ranged between 410 and 460 kJ/day according to the experiment (P<0.01). An experiment conducted with a shorter duration of fasting (16 h) indicated that FHP values are higher than those obtained over at least 24 h of fasting. Our values are similar to those obtained previously on fatter and slow-growing birds, even though the comparison is difficult since measurement conditions and methodologies have changed during the last 30 years.     RNA-seq analyses of blood-induced changes in gene expression in the mosquito vector species, Aedes aegypti

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hematophagy is a common trait of insect vectors of disease. Extensive genome-wide transcriptional changes occur in mosquitoes after blood meals, and these are related to digestive and reproductive processes, among others. Studies of these changes are expected to reveal molecular targets for novel vector control and pathogen transmission-blocking strategies. The mosquito <it>Aedes aegypti </it>(Diptera, Culicidae), a vector of Dengue viruses, Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) and Chikungunya virus (CV), is the subject of this study to look at genome-wide changes in gene expression following a blood meal.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Transcriptional changes that follow a blood meal in <it>Ae. aegypti </it>females were explored using RNA-seq technology. Over 30% of more than 18,000 investigated transcripts accumulate differentially in mosquitoes at five hours after a blood meal when compared to those fed only on sugar. Forty transcripts accumulate only in blood-fed mosquitoes. The list of regulated transcripts correlates with an enhancement of digestive activity and a suppression of environmental stimuli perception and innate immunity. The alignment of more than 65 million high-quality short reads to the <it>Ae. aegypti </it>reference genome permitted the refinement of the current annotation of transcript boundaries, as well as the discovery of novel transcripts, exons and splicing variants. <it>Cis</it>-regulatory elements (CRE) and <it>cis</it>-regulatory modules (CRM) enriched significantly at the 5'end flanking sequences of blood meal-regulated genes were identified.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study provides the first global view of the changes in transcript accumulation elicited by a blood meal in <it>Ae. aegypti </it>females. This information permitted the identification of classes of potentially co-regulated genes and a description of biochemical and physiological events that occur immediately after blood feeding. The data presented here serve as a basis for novel vector control and pathogen transmission-blocking strategies including those in which the vectors are modified genetically to express anti-pathogen effector molecules.</p

    ReCombine: A Suite of Programs for Detection and Analysis of Meiotic Recombination in Whole-Genome Datasets

    In meiosis, the exchange of DNA between chromosomes by homologous recombination is a critical step that ensures proper chromosome segregation and increases genetic diversity. Products of recombination include reciprocal exchanges, known as crossovers, and non-reciprocal gene conversions or non-crossovers. The mechanisms underlying meiotic recombination remain elusive, largely because of the difficulty of analyzing large numbers of recombination events by traditional genetic methods. These traditional methods are increasingly being superseded by high-throughput techniques capable of surveying meiotic recombination on a genome-wide basis. Next-generation sequencing or microarray hybridization is used to genotype thousands of polymorphic markers in the progeny of hybrid yeast strains. New computational tools are needed to perform this genotyping and to find and analyze recombination events. We have developed a suite of programs, ReCombine, for using short sequence reads from next-generation sequencing experiments to genotype yeast meiotic progeny. Upon genotyping, the program CrossOver, a component of ReCombine, then detects recombination products and classifies them into categories based on the features found at each location and their distribution among the various chromatids. CrossOver is also capable of analyzing segregation data from microarray experiments or other sources. This package of programs is designed to allow even researchers without computational expertise to use high-throughput, whole-genome methods to study the molecular mechanisms of meiotic recombination

    HMMSplicer: A Tool for Efficient and Sensitive Discovery of Known and Novel Splice Junctions in RNA-Seq Data

    Background: High-throughput sequencing of an organism’s transcriptome, or RNA-Seq, is a valuable and versatile new strategy for capturing snapshots of gene expression. However, transcriptome sequencing creates a new class of alignment problem: mapping short reads that span exon-exon junctions back to the reference genome, especially in the case where a splice junction is previously unknown. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here we introduce HMMSplicer, an accurate and efficient algorithm for discovering canonical and non-canonical splice junctions in short read datasets. HMMSplicer identifies more splice junctions than currently available algorithms when tested on publicly available A. thaliana, P. falciparum, and H. sapiens datasets without a reduction in specificity. Conclusions/Significance: HMMSplicer was found to perform especially well in compact genomes and on genes with low expression levels, alternative splice isoforms, or non-canonical splice junctions. Because HHMSplicer does not rely on prebuilt gene models, the products of inexact splicing are also detected. For H. sapiens, we find 3.6 % of 39 splice sites and 1.4% of 59 splice sites are inexact, typically differing by 3 bases in either direction. In addition, HMMSplicer provides a score for every predicted junction allowing the user to set a threshold to tune false positive rates depending on the needs of the experiment.
