Apparition d'encéphalomyélite aviaire au Sénégal
Des cas d'encéphalomyélite aviaire ont été mis en évidence sur des poussins, poulettes futures pondeuses, en novembre 1997. C'était la première fois que cette maladie était diagnostiquée au Sénégal. Les lésions classiques de cette virose révélées lors du diagnostic histologique ont confirmé sa présence. La vaccination contre l'encéphalomyélite n'était pas obligatoire et certains couvoirs ne vaccinaient pas leurs reproducteurs. L'existence de cette pathologie semble imposer dorénavant une vaccination de tous les reproducteurs du Sénégal. Parallèlement, se pose aussi le problème de la vaccination des poulettes, futures pondeuses. En effet, le syndrome de chute de ponte sévit à l'heure actuelle sur le territoire et le laboratoire doit, en premier lieu, effectuer un diagnostic différentiel avec la maladie de Newcastle et la bronchite infectieuse avant de proposer des recommandations précises. Testing Reactive Probabilistic Processes
We define a testing equivalence in the spirit of De Nicola and Hennessy for
reactive probabilistic processes, i.e. for processes where the internal
nondeterminism is due to random behaviour. We characterize the testing
equivalence in terms of ready-traces. From the characterization it follows that
the equivalence is insensitive to the exact moment in time in which an internal
probabilistic choice occurs, which is inherent from the original testing
equivalence of De Nicola and Hennessy. We also show decidability of the testing
equivalence for finite systems for which the complete model may not be known
Using Strategy Improvement to Stay Alive
We design a novel algorithm for solving Mean-Payoff Games (MPGs). Besides
solving an MPG in the usual sense, our algorithm computes more information
about the game, information that is important with respect to applications. The
weights of the edges of an MPG can be thought of as a gained/consumed energy --
depending on the sign. For each vertex, our algorithm computes the minimum
amount of initial energy that is sufficient for player Max to ensure that in a
play starting from the vertex, the energy level never goes below zero. Our
algorithm is not the first algorithm that computes the minimum sufficient
initial energies, but according to our experimental study it is the fastest
algorithm that computes them. The reason is that it utilizes the strategy
improvement technique which is very efficient in practice

Predictors of linkage to care following community-based HIV counseling and testing in rural Kenya
Despite innovations in HIV counseling and testing (HCT), important gaps remain in understanding linkage to care. We followed a cohort diagnosed with HIV through a community-based HCT campaign that trained persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) as navigators. Individual, interpersonal, and institutional predictors of linkage were assessed using survival analysis of self-reported time to enrollment. Of 483 persons consenting to follow-up, 305 (63.2%) enrolled in HIV care within 3 months. Proportions linking to care were similar across sexes, barring a sub-sample of men aged 18–25 years who were highly unlikely to enroll. Men were more likely to enroll if they had disclosed to their spouse, and women if they had disclosed to family. Women who anticipated violence or relationship breakup were less likely to link to care. Enrolment rates were significantly higher among participants receiving a PLHA visit, suggesting that a navigator approach may improve linkage from community-based HCT campaigns.Vestergaard Frandse
Lumpability Abstractions of Rule-based Systems
The induction of a signaling pathway is characterized by transient complex
formation and mutual posttranslational modification of proteins. To faithfully
capture this combinatorial process in a mathematical model is an important
challenge in systems biology. Exploiting the limited context on which most
binding and modification events are conditioned, attempts have been made to
reduce the combinatorial complexity by quotienting the reachable set of
molecular species, into species aggregates while preserving the deterministic
semantics of the thermodynamic limit. Recently we proposed a quotienting that
also preserves the stochastic semantics and that is complete in the sense that
the semantics of individual species can be recovered from the aggregate
semantics. In this paper we prove that this quotienting yields a sufficient
condition for weak lumpability and that it gives rise to a backward Markov
bisimulation between the original and aggregated transition system. We

The Novel Object and Unusual Name (NOUN) database: a collection of novel images for use in experimental research
Many experimental research designs require images of novel objects. Here we introduce the Novel Object and Unusual Name (NOUN) Database. This database contains 64 primary novel object images and additional novel exemplars for ten basic- and nine global-level object categories. The objects’ novelty was confirmed by both self-report and a lack of consensus on questions that required participants to name and identify the objects. We also found that object novelty correlated with qualifying naming responses pertaining to the objects’ colors. Results from a similarity sorting task (and subsequent multidimensional scaling analysis on the similarity ratings) demonstrated that the objects are complex and distinct entities that vary along several featural dimensions beyond simply shape and color. A final experiment confirmed that additional item exemplars comprise both sub- and superordinate categories. These images may be useful in a variety of settings, particularly for developmental psychology and other research in language, categorization, perception, visual memory and related domains
Follicular lymphoma international prognostic index.
The prognosis of follicular lymphomas (FL) is heterogeneous and numerous treatments may be proposed. A validated prognostic index (PI) would help in evaluating and choosing these treatments. Characteristics at diagnosis were collected from 4167 patients with FL diagnosed between 1985 and 1992. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to propose a PI. This index was then tested on 919 patients. Five adverse prognostic factors were selected: age (> 60 years vs or = 120 g/L), number of nodal areas (> 4 vs or = 3 adverse factors, 27% of patients, HR = 4.3). This Follicular Lymphoma International Prognostic Index (FLIPI) appeared more discriminant than the International Prognostic Index proposed for aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Results were very similar in the confirmation group. The FLIPI may be used for improving treatment choices, comparing clinical trials, and designing studies to evaluate new treatments
Site Fidelity in Space Use by Spider Monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Animal home ranges may vary little in their size and location in the short term but nevertheless show more variability in the long term. We evaluated the degree of site fidelity of two groups of spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) over a 10- and 13-year period, respectively, in the northeastern Yucatan peninsula, Mexico. We used the Local Convex Hull method to estimate yearly home ranges and core areas (defined as the 60% probability contour) for the two groups. Home ranges varied from 7.7 to 49.6 ha and core areas varied from 3.1 to 9.2 ha. We evaluated the degree of site fidelity by quantifying the number of years in which different areas were used as either home ranges or core areas. Large tracts were used only as home ranges and only for a few years, whereas small areas were used as either core area or home range for the duration of the study. The sum of the yearly core areas coincided partially with the yearly home ranges, indicating that home ranges contain areas used intermittently. Home ranges, and especially core areas, contained a higher proportion of mature forest than the larger study site as a whole. Across years and only in one group, the size of core areas was positively correlated with the proportion of adult males in the group, while the size of home ranges was positively correlated with both the proportion of males and the number of tree species included in the diet. Our findings suggest that spider monkey home ranges are the result of a combination of long-term site fidelity and year-to-year use variation to enable exploration of new resources
Emergence of four dimensional quantum mechanics from a deterministic theory in 11 dimensions
We develop a deterministic theory which accounts for the coupling of a high dimensional continuum of environmental excitations (called gravonons) to massive particle in a very localized and very weak fashion. For the model presented Schrodinger's equation can be solved practically exactly in 11 spacetime dimensions and the result demonstrates that as a function of time an incoming matter wave incident on a screen extinguishes, except at a single interaction center on the detection screen. This transition is reminiscent of the wave - particle duality arising from the "collapse" (also called "process one") postulated in the Copenhagen-von Neumann interpretation. In our theory it is replaced by a sticking process of the particle from the vacuum to the surface of the detection screen. This situation was verified in experiments by using massive molecules. In our theory this "wave-particle transition" is connected to the different dimensionalities of the space for particle motion and the gravonon dynamics, the latter propagating in the hidden dimensions of 11 dimensional spacetime. The fact that the particle is detected at apparently statistically determined points on the screen is traced back to the weakness and locality of the interaction with the gravonons which allows coupling on the energy shell alone. Although the theory exhibits a completely deterministic "chooser" mechanism for single site sticking, an apparent statistical character results, as it is found in the experiments, due to small heterogeneities in the atomic and gravonon structures
