Modern control concepts in hydrology
Two approaches to an identification problem in hydrology are presented based upon concepts from modern control and estimation theory. The first approach treats the identification of unknown parameters in a hydrologic system subject to noisy inputs as an adaptive linear stochastic control problem; the second approach alters the model equation to account for the random part in the inputs, and then uses a nonlinear estimation scheme to estimate the unknown parameters. Both approaches use state-space concepts. The identification schemes are sequential and adaptive and can handle either time invariant or time dependent parameters. They are used to identify parameters in the Prasad model of rainfall-runoff. The results obtained are encouraging and conform with results from two previous studies; the first using numerical integration of the model equation along with a trial-and-error procedure, and the second, by using a quasi-linearization technique. The proposed approaches offer a systematic way of analyzing the rainfall-runoff process when the input data are imbedded in noise
Up-Down Unification, Neutrino Masses and Rare Lepton Decays
In a recent paper, we showed that tree level up-down unification of fermion
Yukawa couplings is a natural consequence of a large class of supersymmetric
models. They can lead to viable quark masses and mixings for moderately large
values of with interesting and testable predictions for CP
violation in the hadronic sector. In this letter, we extend our discussion to
the leptonic sector focusing on one particular class of these models, the
supersymmetric left-right model with the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses.
We show that fitting the solar and the atmospheric neutrino data considerably
restricts the Majorana-Yukawa couplings of the leptons in this model and leads
to predictions for the decay , which is found to be
accessible to the next generation of rare decay searches. We also show that the
resulting parameter space of the model is consistent with the requirements of
generating adequate baryon asymmetry through lepton-number violating decays of

A team effort: natural killer cells on the first leg of the tumor immunity relay race
Recent work by Böttcher and colleagues defines a new role for Natural Killer cells in the anti-tumor immune response, arriving early into the tumor microenvironment before passing the baton to DC1 dendritic cells. DC1 dendritic cells subsequently activate CD8+ T cells resulting in effective anti-tumor immunity. The VAST Survey - IV. A wide brown dwarf companion to the A3V star Delphini
We report the discovery of a wide co-moving substellar companion to the
nearby ( pc) A3V star Delphini based on imaging and
follow-up spectroscopic observations obtained during the course of our
Volume-limited A-Star (VAST) multiplicity survey. Del was observed over
a five-year baseline with adaptive optics, revealing the presence of a
previously-unresolved companion with a proper motion consistent with that of
the A-type primary. The age of the Del system was estimated as
Myr based on the position of the primary on the colour-magnitude
and temperature-luminosity diagrams. Using intermediate-resolution
near-infrared spectroscopy, the spectrum of Del B is shown to be
consistent with a mid-L dwarf (L), at a temperature of K.
Combining the measured near-infrared magnitude of Del B with the
estimated temperature leads to a model-dependent mass estimate of
M, corresponding to a mass ratio of . At a
projected separation of au, Del B is among the most
widely-separated and extreme-mass ratio substellar companions to a
main-sequence star resolved to-date, providing a rare empirical constraint of

Cognitive full-duplex relay networks under the peak interference power constraint of multiple primary users
Abstract
This paper investigates the outage performance of cognitive spectrum-sharing multi-relay networks in which the relays operate in a full-duplex (FD) mode and employ the decode-and-forward (DF) protocol. Two relay selection schemes, i.e., partial relay selection (PRS) and optimal relay selection (ORS), are considered to enhance the system performance. New exact expressions for the outage probability (OP) in both schemes are derived based on which an asymptotic analysis is carried out. The results show that the ORS strategy outperforms PRS in terms of OP, and increasing the number of FD relays can significantly improve the system performance. Moreover, novel analytical results provide additional insights for system design. In particular, from the viewpoint of FD concept, the primary network parameters (i.e., peak interference at the primary receivers, number of primary receivers, and their locations) should be carefully considered since they significantly affect the secondary network performance
Absorbing boundary conditions for the Westervelt equation
The focus of this work is on the construction of a family of nonlinear
absorbing boundary conditions for the Westervelt equation in one and two space
dimensions. The principal ingredient used in the design of such conditions is
pseudo-differential calculus. This approach enables to develop high order
boundary conditions in a consistent way which are typically more accurate than
their low order analogs. Under the hypothesis of small initial data, we
establish local well-posedness for the Westervelt equation with the absorbing
boundary conditions. The performed numerical experiments illustrate the
efficiency of the proposed boundary conditions for different regimes of wave
propagation
‘Never testing for HIV’ among Men who have Sex with Men in Viet Nam: results from an internet-based cross-sectional survey

Men who have sex with men in Viet Nam have been under-studied as a high-risk group for HIV infection, and this population’s percentage and determinants of HIV testing have not been comprehensively investigated.
Methods
A national Internet-based survey of self-reported sexual and health seeking behaviours was conducted between August and October 2011 with 2077 Vietnamese men who had sex with men in the last twelve months to identify the frequency of ‘never testing for HIV’ among Internet-using MSM living in Viet Nam, as well as the factors associated with this HIV-related high-rish behavior. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the demographic characteristics and behaviours predicting never testing for HIV.
Results
A total of 76.5% of men who have sex with men who were surveyed reported never having been voluntarily tested for HIV. Predictors of never being tested included having a monthly income less than VND 5 Million, being a student, using the Internet less than 15 hour per week, and not participating in a behavioural HIV intervention.
Conclusions
Never testing for HIV is common among Internet-using men who have sex with men in Viet Nam. Given the dangerously high prevalence of this high-risk behaviour, our findings underscore the urgent need for segmented and targeted HIV prevention, care and treatment strategies, focusing on drastically reducing the number of men who have sex with men never testing for HIV in Viet Nam
