Lazy AC-Pattern Matching for Rewriting
We define a lazy pattern-matching mechanism modulo associativity and
commutativity. The solutions of a pattern-matching problem are stored in a lazy
list composed of a first substitution at the head and a non-evaluated object
that encodes the remaining computations. We integrate the lazy AC-matching in a
strategy language: rewriting rule and strategy application produce a lazy list

Tactics for Reasoning modulo AC in Coq
We present a set of tools for rewriting modulo associativity and
commutativity (AC) in Coq, solving a long-standing practical problem. We use
two building blocks: first, an extensible reflexive decision procedure for
equality modulo AC; second, an OCaml plug-in for pattern matching modulo AC. We
handle associative only operations, neutral elements, uninterpreted function
symbols, and user-defined equivalence relations. By relying on type-classes for
the reification phase, we can infer these properties automatically, so that
end-users do not need to specify which operation is A or AC, or which constant
is a neutral element.Comment: 16
TYC 2675-663-1: A newly discovered W UMa system in an active state
The recently discovered eclipsing binary system TYC 2675-663-1 is a X-ray
source, and shows properties in the optical that are similar to the W UMa
systems, but are somewhat unusual compared to what is seen in other contact
binary systems. The goal of this work is to characterize its properties and
investigate its nature by means of detailed photometric and spectroscopic
observations. We have performed extensive V-band photometric measurements with
the INTEGRAL satellite along with ground-based multi-band photometric
observations, as well as high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring from which we
have measured the radial velocities of the components. These data have been
analysed to determine the stellar properties, including the absolute masses and
radii. Additional low-resolution spectroscopy was obtained to investigate
spectral features. From the measured eclipse timings we determine an orbital
period for the binary of P=0.4223576+-0.0000009 days. The light-curve and
spectroscopic analyses reveal the observations to be well represented by a
model of an overcontact system composed of main-sequence F5 and G7 stars
(temperature difference of nearly 1000 K), with the possible presence of a
third star. Low-resolution optical spectroscopy reveals a complex H alpha
emission, and other features that are not yet understood. The unusually large
mass ratio of q=0.81+-0.05 places it in the rare "H" (high mass ratio) subclass
of the W UMa systems, which are presumably on their way to coalescence.Comment: 12 pages in double column format. Accepted for publication in

DNA bending by photolyase in specific and non-specific complexes studied by atomic force microscopy
Specific and non-specific complexes of DNA and photolyase are visualised by atomic force microscopy. As a substrate for photolyase a 1150 bp DNA restriction fragment was UV-irradiated to produce damaged sites at random positions. Comparison with a 735 bp undamaged DNA fragment made it possible to separate populations of specific and non-specific photolyase complexes on the 1150 bp fragment, relieving the need for highly defined substrates. Thus it was possible to compare DNA bending for specific and non-specific interactions. Non-specific complexes show no significant bending but increased rigidity compared to naked DNA, whereas specific complexes show DNA bending of on average 36°and higher flexibility. A model obtained by docking shows that photolyase can accommodate a 36°bent DNA in the vicinity of the active site
Structural Synthesis for GXW Specifications
We define the GXW fragment of linear temporal logic (LTL) as the basis for
synthesizing embedded control software for safety-critical applications. Since
GXW includes the use of a weak-until operator we are able to specify a number
of diverse programmable logic control (PLC) problems, which we have compiled
from industrial training sets. For GXW controller specifications, we develop a
novel approach for synthesizing a set of synchronously communicating
actor-based controllers. This synthesis algorithm proceeds by means of
recursing over the structure of GXW specifications, and generates a set of
dedicated and synchronously communicating sub-controllers according to the
formula structure. In a subsequent step, 2QBF constraint solving identifies and
tries to resolve potential conflicts between individual GXW specifications.
This structural approach to GXW synthesis supports traceability between
requirements and the generated control code as mandated by certification
regimes for safety-critical software. Synthesis for GXW specifications is in
PSPACE compared to 2EXPTIME-completeness of full-fledged LTL synthesis. Indeed
our experimental results suggest that GXW synthesis scales well to
industrial-sized control synthesis problems with 20 input and output ports and

Multidrug- and extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis
We evaluated risk factors and treatment outcomes associated with multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB) in Germany in 2004–2006. In 177 (4%) of 4,557 culture-positive TB cases, Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates were identified as MDR TB; an additional 7 (0.15%) met criteria for XDR TB. Of these 184 patients, 148 (80%) were born in countries of the former Soviet Union. In patients with XDR TB, hospitalization was longer (mean ± SD 202 ± 130 vs. 123 ± 81 days; p = 0.015) and resistance to all first-line drugs was more frequent (36% vs. 86%; p = 0.013) than in patients with MDR TB. Seventy-four (40%) of these 184 patients received treatment with linezolid. Treatment success rates ranged from 59% for the entire cohort (59% for MDR TB and 57% for XDR TB) to 87% for those with a definitive outcome (n = 125; 89% for MDR TB and 80% for XDR TB). Extensive drug susceptibility testing and availability of second- and third-line drugs under inpatient management conditions permit relatively high treatment success rates in MDR- and XDR TB
Laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair in the presence of extensive paraumbilical collateral veins: A case report
A patient with an umbilical hernia presenting with collateral veins in the abdominal wall and umbilicus is a case that every hernia surgeon has to deal with occasionally. Several underlying diseases have been described to provoke collateral veins in the abdominal wall. However, the treatment strategy should be uniform. We herein report a case of a successful laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair in a patient with collateral veins in the abdominal wall and umbilicus. A 63-year-old man was referred to the surgical outpatient clinic with a large symptomatic umbilical hernia and collateral veins in the abdominal wall, secondary to an occlusion of both common iliac veins. Because of collateral veins in the umbilicus and the size of the hernial defect, he was offered laparoscopic hernia repair without compromising these veins. Because of the extensive abdominal wall collaterals, duplex sonography vein mapping was performed preoperatively to mark a safe collateral-free area for trocar introduction. The defect was repaired by mesh prosthesis
A Taxonomy of Causality-Based Biological Properties
We formally characterize a set of causality-based properties of metabolic
networks. This set of properties aims at making precise several notions on the
production of metabolites, which are familiar in the biologists' terminology.
From a theoretical point of view, biochemical reactions are abstractly
represented as causal implications and the produced metabolites as causal
consequences of the implication representing the corresponding reaction. The
fact that a reactant is produced is represented by means of the chain of
reactions that have made it exist. Such representation abstracts away from
quantities, stoichiometric and thermodynamic parameters and constitutes the
basis for the characterization of our properties. Moreover, we propose an
effective method for verifying our properties based on an abstract model of
system dynamics. This consists of a new abstract semantics for the system seen
as a concurrent network and expressed using the Chemical Ground Form calculus.
We illustrate an application of this framework to a portion of a real
metabolic pathway
Prototyping the Semantics of a DSL using ASF+SDF: Link to Formal Verification of DSL Models
A formal definition of the semantics of a domain-specific language (DSL) is a
key prerequisite for the verification of the correctness of models specified
using such a DSL and of transformations applied to these models. For this
reason, we implemented a prototype of the semantics of a DSL for the
specification of systems consisting of concurrent, communicating objects. Using
this prototype, models specified in the DSL can be transformed to labeled
transition systems (LTS). This approach of transforming models to LTSs allows
us to apply existing tools for visualization and verification to models with
little or no further effort. The prototype is implemented using the ASF+SDF
Meta-Environment, an IDE for the algebraic specification language ASF+SDF,
which offers efficient execution of the transformation as well as the ability

A spectroscopy study of nearby late-type stars, possible members of stellar kinematic groups
Nearby late-type stars are excellent targets for seeking young objects in
stellar associations and moving groups. The origin of these structures is still
misunderstood, and lists of moving group members often change with time and
also from author to author. Most members of these groups have been identified
by means of kinematic criteria, leading to an important contamination of
previous lists by old field stars. We attempt to identify unambiguous moving
group members among a sample of nearby-late type stars by studying their
kinematics, lithium abundance, chromospheric activity, and other age-related
properties. High-resolution echelle spectra () of a sample of
nearby late-type stars are used to derive accurate radial velocities that are
combined with the precise Hipparcos parallaxes and proper motions to compute
galactic-spatial velocity components. Stars are classified as possible members
of the classical moving groups according to their kinematics. The spectra are
also used to study several age-related properties for young late-type stars,
i.e., the equivalent width of the lithium Li~{\sc i} \space 6707.8 \space \AA
\space line or the index. Additional information like X-ray
fluxes from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey or the presence of debris discs is also
taken into account. The different age estimators are compared and the moving
group membership of the kinematically selected candidates are discussed. From a
total list of 405 nearby stars, 102 have been classified as moving group
candidates according to their kinematics. i.e., only 25.2 \% of the
sample. The number reduces when age estimates are considered, and only 26
moving group candidates (25.5\% of the 102 candidates) have ages in agreement
