Conceptual and socio-cognitive support for collaborative learning in videoconferencing environments
Studies have shown that videoconferences are an effective medium for facilitating communication between parties who are separated by distance. Furthermore, studies reveal that videoconferences are effective when used for distance learning, particularly when learners are engaged in complex collaborative learning tasks. However, as in face-to-face communication, learners benefit most when they receive additional support for such learning tasks. This article provides an overview of three empirical studies to illustrate more general insights regarding some of the more and less effective ways of supporting collaborative learning with videoconferencing. The focus is on conceptual support, such as structural visualization and socio-cognitive support, such as scripts. Based on the results of the three studies, conclusions can be drawn about the conceptual and socio-cognitive support measures that promote learning. Conclusions can also be reached about the need for employing both conceptual and socio-cognitive support to provide learners with the most benefit
Differences in intestinal size, structure, and function contributing to feed efficiency in broiler chickens reared at geographically distant locations
The contribution of the intestinal tract to differences in residual feed intake (RFI) has been inconclusively studied in chickens so far. It is also not clear if RFI-related differences in intestinal function are similar in chickens raised in different environments. The objective was to investigate differences in nutrient retention, visceral organ size, intestinal morphology, jejunal permeability and expression of genes related to barrier function, and innate immune response in chickens of diverging RFI raised at 2 locations (L1: Austria; L2: UK). The experimental protocol was similar, and the same dietary formulation was fed at the 2 locations. Individual BW and feed intake (FI) of chickens (Cobb 500FF) were recorded from d 7 of life. At 5 wk of life, chickens (L1, n = 157; L2 = 192) were ranked according to their RFI, and low, medium, and high RFI chickens were selected (n = 9/RFI group, sex, and location). RFI values were similar between locations within the same RFI group and increased by 446 and 464 g from low to high RFI in females and males, respectively. Location, but not RFI rank, affected growth, nutrient retention, size of the intestine, and jejunal disaccharidase activity. Chickens from L2 had lower total body weight gain and mucosal enzyme activity but higher nutrient retention and longer intestines than chickens at L1. Parameters determined only at L1 showed increased crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum and enhanced paracellular permeability in low vs. high RFI females. Jejunal expression of IL1B was lower in low vs. high RFI females at L2, whereas that of TLR4 at L1 and MCT1 at both locations was higher in low vs. high RFI males. Correlation analysis between intestinal parameters and feed efficiency metrics indicated that feed conversion ratio was more correlated to intestinal size and function than was RFI. In conclusion, the rearing environment greatly affected intestinal size and function, thereby contributing to the variation in chicken RFI observed across locations
Numerical study of a first-order irreversible phase transition in a CO+NO catalyzed reaction model
The first-order irreversible phase transitions (IPT) of the Yaldran-Khan
model (Yaldran-Khan, J. Catal. 131, 369, 1991) for the CO+NO reaction is
studied using the constant coverage (CC) ensemble and performing epidemic
simulations. The CC method allows the study of hysteretic effects close to
coexistence as well as the location of both the upper spinodal point and the
coexistence point. Epidemic studies show that at coexistence the number of
active sites decreases according to a (short-time) power law followed by a
(long-time) exponential decay. It is concluded that first-order IPT's share
many characteristic of their reversible counterparts, such as the development
of short ranged correlations, hysteretic effects, metastabilities, etc.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure
Supersymmetric black holes in 2D dilaton supergravity: baldness and extremality
We present a systematic discussion of supersymmetric solutions of 2D dilaton
supergravity. In particular those solutions which retain at least half of the
supersymmetries are ground states with respect to the bosonic Casimir function
(essentially the ADM mass). Nevertheless, by tuning the prepotential
appropriately, black hole solutions may emerge with an arbitrary number of
Killing horizons. The absence of dilatino and gravitino hair is proven.
Moreover, the impossibility of supersymmetric dS ground states and of
nonextremal black holes is confirmed, even in the presence of a dilaton. In
these derivations the knowledge of the general analytic solution of 2D dilaton
supergravity plays an important role. The latter result is addressed in the
more general context of gPSMs which have no supergravity interpretation.
Finally it is demonstrated that the inclusion of non-minimally coupled
matter, a step which is already nontrivial by itself, does not change these

Mentoring as a Predominant Factor Affecting Well-Being of Older People
The authors of the paper studied the state of well-being of older people who retired and stop working at the company they have worked for over 20 years. The survey provided some useful insights into the problem with the reference to three samples of 10 older people from each group: 1) older people who retired and keep in touch with the previous organisation; 2) older people who retired and continue working at the company as consultants, supervisors, experts, mentors etc.; 3) older people who retired and work in another enterprise and lost the touch with the previous organisation. Retired people took part in present research by completing a questionnaire survey. A set of data was examined by being compared to reveal the state of older people’s well-being criteria predominance in the various sample groups

Electron-correlation effects in appearance-potential spectra of Ni
Spin-resolved and temperature-dependent appearance-potential spectra of
ferromagnetic Nickel are measured and analyzed theoretically. The Lander
self-convolution model which relates the line shape to the unoccupied part of
the local density of states turns out to be insufficient. Electron correlations
and orbitally resolved transition-matrix elements are shown to be essential for

MicroRNA-24 regulates vascularity after myocardial infarction
BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction leads to cardiac remodeling and development of heart failure. Insufficient myocardial capillary density after myocardial infarction has been identified as a critical event in this process, although the underlying mechanisms of cardiac angiogenesis are mechanistically not well understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, we show that the small noncoding RNA microRNA-24 (miR-24) is enriched in cardiac endothelial cells and considerably upregulated after cardiac ischemia. MiR-24 induces endothelial cell apoptosis, abolishes endothelial capillary network formation on Matrigel, and inhibits cell sprouting from endothelial spheroids. These effects are mediated through targeting of the endothelium-enriched transcription factor GATA2 and the p21-activated kinase PAK4, which were identified by bioinformatic predictions and validated by luciferase gene reporter assays. Respective downstream signaling cascades involving phosphorylated BAD (Bcl-XL/Bcl-2-associated death promoter) and Sirtuin1 were identified by transcriptome, protein arrays, and chromatin immunoprecipitation analyses. Overexpression of miR-24 or silencing of its targets significantly impaired angiogenesis in zebrafish embryos. Blocking of endothelial miR-24 limited myocardial infarct size of mice via prevention of endothelial apoptosis and enhancement of vascularity, which led to preserved cardiac function and survival. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that miR-24 acts as a critical regulator of endothelial cell apoptosis and angiogenesis and is suitable for therapeutic intervention in the setting of ischemic heart disease. First-principles extrapolation method for accurate CO adsorption energies on metal surfaces
We show that a simple first-principles correction based on the difference
between the singlet-triplet CO excitation energy values obtained by DFT and
high-level quantum chemistry methods yields accurate CO adsorption properties
on a variety of metal surfaces.
We demonstrate a linear relationship between the CO adsorption energy and the
CO singlet-triplet splitting, similar to the linear dependence of CO adsorption
energy on the energy of the CO 2* orbital found recently {[Kresse {\em et
al.}, Physical Review B {\bf 68}, 073401 (2003)]}. Converged DFT calculations
underestimate the CO singlet-triplet excitation energy ,
whereas coupled-cluster and CI calculations reproduce the experimental . The dependence of on is used
to extrapolate for the top, bridge and hollow sites for the
(100) and (111) surfaces of Pt, Rh, Pd and Cu to the values that correspond to
the coupled-cluster and CI value. The correction
reproduces experimental adsorption site preference for all cases and obtains

Long time black hole evaporation with bounded Hawking flux
The long time behavior of an evaporating Schwarzschild black hole is studied
exploiting that it can be described by an effective theory in 2D, a particular
dilaton gravity model.
A crucial technical ingredient is Izawa's result on consistent deformations
of 2D BF theory, while the most relevant physical assumption is boundedness of
the asymptotic matter flux during the whole evaporation process.
An attractor solution, the endpoint of the evaporation process, is found. Its
metric is flat. However, the behavior of the dilaton field is nontrivial: it is
argued that during the final flicker a first order phase transition occurs from
a linear to a constant dilaton vacuum, thereby emitting a shock wave with a
total energy of a fraction of the Planck mass. Another fraction of the Planck
