The uses of Man-Made diamond in wafering applications
The continuing, rapid growth of the semiconductor industry requires the involvement of several specialized industries in the development of special products geared toward the unique requirements of this new industry. A specialized manufactured diamond to meet various material removal needs was discussed. The area of silicon wafer slicing has presented yet anothr challenge and it is met most effectively. The history, operation, and performance of Man-Made diamond and particularly as applied to silicon wafer slicing is discussed. Product development is underway to come up with a diamond specifically for sawing silicon wafers on an electroplated blade
In Memoriam: Daniel J. Meltzer
Sedan år 2006 har den syntetiskt framställda drogen spice existerat i Sverige, men först år 2008 blev drogen populär och tidningar började rikta uppmärksamhet mot den. Genom att drogen kan byta skepnad i uppbyggnaden kan den förbli laglig, därför kan egentligen namnet “spice” inte betraktas som ett enhetligt begrepp. Vårt syfte med denna studie blev att granska hur drogen spice beskrivs i tidningar och forskning. Även hur drogen betraktas gällande psykosociala och medicinska avseenden. Detta i förhållande till socialkonstruktivistiskt perspektiv. Den metod som vi valde att använda oss av i studien var kvantitativ innehållsanalys. Genom analys av 80 stycken svenska tidningsartiklar hämtade ur databasen mediearkivet, samt vetenskapliga artiklar och litteratur har vi besvarat våra frågeställningar. De resultat vi fick från analyser visade på att tidningar kan vara av betydande roll för ungdomars attityder. Tidningar kan utföra bland annat skrämselpropaganda för att upplysa och förhindra brukandet av spice, dessvärre visar resultatet en motsatt effekt. Forskning visar att bruk av spice kan påverka relationer och arbete negativt. Dessutom är några bieffekter av spice bröstsmärtor, vanföreställningar, självmordstankar och hjärtstopp
Quality Suckler Beef From Low and High Input Grassland Management Systems
End of Project ReportSpring calving cows were used in the years 1997 to 2003 in the
development of planned low and high input systems of suckler beef
production.The main objective of the study was to compare a semiintensive
Grange (standard): system of suckler beef production with
a more extensive REPS (Rural Environment Protection Scheme) compatible
system. In the standard system the stocking rate was 0.80 ha
per cow unit (cow plus heifer and steer progeny to slaughter at 20
and 23/24 months of age, respectively, plus replacements or its equivalent),
a nitrogenous fertiliser application rate of 210 kg per ha and
two silage harvests each year amounting to the equivalent of 87% of
the total area harvested. The REPS system involved a 25% lower
stocking rate, an annual nitrogen fertiliser application rate of 90 to
100 kg per ha and one silage harvest (portion in late May to provide
good silage for the progeny and the remainder in June to provide
lower quality silage for cows) amounting to 58% of the total area
harvested.
Between 1997 and 2000 the cow herd were Limousin x Friesians
(LF) and Simmental x (Limousin x Friesians) (SLF). A herd of first
calvers were introduced in 2001 and 2002 which in addition to LF
and SLF included Limousin x (Limousin x Friesians), purebred
Limousin and purebred Charolais. Charolais (or Simmental) sires
were used on mature cows. Replacement heifers were bred to calve
at 2 years of age using an easy calving Limousin bull. Concentrate
inputs per animal were the same in the two systems.
The main findings of the study were:
• The mean nitrogenous application rates were 210 and 98 kg
per ha in the standard and REPS systems, respectively.
• Mean dry matter digestibility of the first-cut silages harvested
early (May 19 to May 29), late (June 5 to June 13) and the
second cut silage in the standard system (harvested in
July/early August) were 716, 690 and 674 g/kg, respectively.
• When averaged throughout two grazing seasons there was no difference between the standard and REPS systems in pregrazing
or post-grazing sward heights.
When examined over one grazing season the only major
difference between the grazing areas was that the pasture
crude protein content was higher in the standard system in
both the pre-grazed (205 and 159 g/kg) and post-grazed (172
v 141 g/kg) swards.
Cow liveweight and body condition score gains at pasture
and calf gains from birth to weaning were the same for both
systems.
Carcass weights of the progeny were the same for the standard
and REPS systems
Experimental evaluation of mobile phone sensors
Smart phone has become an important part of people's daily life. Most of current smart phone are equipped with a rich set of built-in sensors. The mobile applications such as geo-location based video annotation and indoor positioning require precise measurements from sensors. In addition, understanding the sensing performance of a smart phone device is helpful for implementing a mobile application that needs sensor data. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of key sensors in a state of the art smart phone - Google Nexus 4. The sensors chosen in the paper are accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and GPS. Relative spins and excitation energies of superdeformed bands in 190Hg: Further evidence for octupole vibration
An experiment using the Eurogam Phase II gamma-ray spectrometer confirms the
existence of an excited superdeformed (SD) band in 190Hg and its very unusual
decay into the lowest SD band over 3-4 transitions. The energies and dipole
character of the transitions linking the two SD bands have been firmly
established. Comparisons with RPA calculations indicate that the excited SD
band can be interpreted as an octupole-vibrational structure.Comment: 12 pages, latex, 4 figures available via WWW at

Active Galactic Nuclei under the scrutiny of CTA
Active Galactic Nuclei (hereafter AGN) produce powerful outflows which offer
excellent conditions for efficient particle acceleration in internal and
external shocks, turbulence, and magnetic reconnection events. The jets as well
as particle accelerating regions close to the supermassive black holes
(hereafter SMBH) at the intersection of plasma inflows and outflows, can
produce readily detectable very high energy gamma-ray emission. As of now, more
than 45 AGN including 41 blazars and 4 radiogalaxies have been detected by the
present ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, which represents more than one third
of the cosmic sources detected so far in the VHE gamma-ray regime. The future
Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) should boost the sample of AGN detected in the
VHE range by about one order of magnitude, shedding new light on AGN population
studies, and AGN classification and unification schemes. CTA will be a unique
tool to scrutinize the extreme high-energy tail of accelerated particles in
SMBH environments, to revisit the central engines and their associated
relativistic jets, and to study the particle acceleration and emission
mechanisms, particularly exploring the missing link between accretion physics,
SMBH magnetospheres and jet formation. Monitoring of distant AGN will be an
extremely rewarding observing program which will inform us about the inner
workings and evolution of AGN. Furthermore these AGN are bright beacons of
gamma-rays which will allow us to constrain the extragalactic infrared and
optical backgrounds as well as the intergalactic magnetic field, and will
enable tests of quantum gravity and other "exotic" phenomena.Comment: 28 pages, 23 figure
Callers’ attitudes and experiences of UK breastfeeding helpline support
Background: Breastfeeding peer support, is considered to be a key intervention for increasing breastfeeding duration rates. Whilst a number of national organisations provide telephone based breastfeeding peer support, to date there have been no published evaluations into callers’ experiences and attitudes of this support. In this study we report on the descriptive and qualitative insights provided by 908 callers as part of an evaluation of UK-based breastfeeding helpline(s).
Methods: A structured telephone interview, incorporating Likert scale responses and open-ended questions was undertaken with 908 callers over May to August, 2011 to explore callers’ experiences of the help and support received via the breastfeeding helpline(s).
Results: Overall satisfaction with the helpline was high, with the vast majority of callers’ recalling positive experiences of the help and support received. Thematic analysis was undertaken on all qualitative and descriptive data recorded during the evaluation, contextualised within the main areas addressed within the interview schedule in terms of ‘contact with the helplines’; ‘experiences of the helpline service’, ‘perceived effectiveness of support provision’ and ‘impact on caller wellbeing’.
Conclusion: Callers valued the opportunity for accessible, targeted, non-judgmental and convenient support. Whilst the telephone support did not necessarily influence women’s breastfeeding decisions, the support they received left them feeling reassured, confident and more determined to continue breastfeeding. We recommend extending the helpline service to ensure support can be accessed when needed, and ongoing training and support for volunteers. Further advertising and promotion of the service within wider demographic groups is warranted
Orbifold projection in supersymmetric QCD at N_f\leq N_c
Supersymmetric orbifold projection of N=1 SQCD with relatively small number
of flavors (not larger than the number of colors) is considered. The purpose is
to check whether orbifolding commutes with the infrared limit. On the one hand,
one considers the orbifold projection of SQCD and obtains the low-energy
description of the resulting theory. On the other hand, one starts with the
low-energy effective theory of the original SQCD, and only then perfoms
orbifolding. It is shown that at finite N_c the two low-energy theories
obtained in these ways are different. However, in the case of stabilized
run-away vacuum these two theories are shown to coincide in the large N_c
limit. In the case of quantum modified moduli space, topological solitons
carrying baryonic charges are present in the orbifolded low-energy theory.
These solitons may restore the correspondence between the two theories provided
that the soliton mass tends to zero in the large N_c limit.Comment: 10 pages; misprint corrected, reference adde
Spin-rotor Interpretation of Identical Bands and Quantized Alignment in Superdeformed A 190 Nuclei
The ``identical'' bands in superdeformed mercury, thallium, and lead nuclei
are interpreted as examples of orbital angular momentum rotors with the weak
