    Instantaneous noise-based logic

We show two universal, Boolean, deterministic logic schemes based on binary noise timefunctions that can be realized without time-averaging units. The first scheme is based on a new bipolar random telegraph wave scheme and the second one makes use of the recent noise-based logic which is conjectured to be the brain's method of logic operations [Physics Letters A 373 (2009) 2338-2342]. Error propagation and error removal issues are also addressed.Comment: Accepted for publication in Fluctuation and Noise Letters (December 2010 issue

The Relative Importance of Search versus Credence Product Attributes: Organic and Locally Grown

    Get PDF
Organic foods and local foods have come to the forefront of consumer issues, due to concerns about nutrition, health, sustainability, and food safety. A conjoint analysis experiment quantified the relative importance of, and trade-offs between, apple search and experience attributes (quality/blemishes, size, flavor), credence attributes (conventional vs. organic production method, local origin vs. product of USA vs. imported), and purchase price when buying apples. Quality is the most important apple attribute. Production method—organic versus conventional—had no significant impact on preferences.conjoint analysis, organic, locally grown, credence attributes, Consumer/Household Economics, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Marketing,

Noise-based information processing: Noise-based logic and computing: what do we have so far?

We briefly introduce noise-based logic. After describing the main motivations we outline classical, instantaneous (squeezed and non-squeezed), continuum, spike and random-telegraph-signal based schemes with applications such as circuits that emulate the brain functioning and string verification via a slow communication channel.Comment: Invited talk at the 21st International Conference on Noise and Fluctuations, Toronto, Canada, June 12-16, 201

Zero and negative energy dissipation at information-theoretic erasure

We introduce information-theoretic erasure based on Shannon's binary channel formula. It is pointed out that this type of erasure is a natural energy-dissipation-free way in which information is lost in double-potential-well memories, and it may be the reason why the brain can forget things effortlessly. We also demonstrate a new non-volatile, charge-based memory scheme wherein the erasure can be associated with even negative energy dissipation; this implies that the memory's environment is cooled during information erasure and contradicts Landauer's principle of erasure dissipation. On the other hand, writing new information into the memory always requires positive energy dissipation in our schemes. Finally, we show a simple system where even a classical erasure process yields negative energy dissipation of arbitrarily large energy.Comment: accepted for publication and is in press at the Journal of Computational Electronic

Ising model on nonorientable surfaces: Exact solution for the Moebius strip and the Klein bottle

Closed-form expressions are obtained for the partition function of the Ising model on an M x N simple-quartic lattice embedded on a Moebius strip and a Klein bottle for finite M and N. The finite-size effects at criticality are analyzed and compared with those under cylindrical and toroidal boundary conditions. Our analysis confirms that the central charge is c=1/2.Comment: 8 pages, 3 eps figure

The Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture for the plaquette operator

    Get PDF
According to the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture, a (d+1)-dimensional pure gauge theory undergoing a continuous deconfinement transition is in the same universality class as a d-dimensional statistical model with order parameter taking values in the center of the gauge group. We show that the plaquette operator of the gauge theory is mapped into the energy operator of the statistical model. For d=2, this identification allows us to use conformal field theory techniques to evaluate exactly the correlation functions of the plaquette operator at the critical point. In particular, we can evaluate exactly the plaquette expectation value in presence of static sources, which gives some new insight in the structure of the color flux tube in mesons and baryons.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX file + three .eps figure
