SlicerAstro: a 3-D interactive visual analytics tool for HI data
SKA precursors are capable of detecting hundreds of galaxies in HI in a
single 12 hours pointing. In deeper surveys one will probe more easily faint HI
structures, typically located in the vicinity of galaxies, such as tails,
filaments, and extraplanar gas. The importance of interactive visualization has
proven to be fundamental for the exploration of such data as it helps users to
receive immediate feedback when manipulating the data. We have developed
SlicerAstro, a 3-D interactive viewer with new analysis capabilities, based on
traditional 2-D input/output hardware. These capabilities enhance the data
inspection, allowing faster analysis of complex sources than with traditional
tools. SlicerAstro is an open-source extension of 3DSlicer, a multi-platform
open source software package for visualization and medical image processing.
We demonstrate the capabilities of the current stable binary release of
SlicerAstro, which offers the following features: i) handling of FITS files and
astronomical coordinate systems; ii) coupled 2-D/3-D visualization; iii)
interactive filtering; iv) interactive 3-D masking; v) and interactive 3-D
modeling. In addition, SlicerAstro has been designed with a strong, stable and
modular C++ core, and its classes are also accessible via Python scripting,
allowing great flexibility for user-customized visualization and analysis

Magnetic properties of HO2 thin films
We report on the magnetic and transport studies of hafnium oxide thin films
grown by pulsed-laser deposition on sapphire substrates under different oxygen
pressures, ranging from 10-7 to 10-1 mbar. Some physical properties of these
thin films appear to depend on the oxygen pressure during growth: the film
grown at low oxygen pressure (P ~= 10-7 mbar) has a metallic aspect and is
conducting, with a positive Hall signal, while those grown under higher oxygen
pressures (7 x 10-5 <= P <= 0.4 mbar) are insulating. However, no intrinsic
ferromagnetic signal could be attributed to the HfO2 films, irrespective of the
oxygen pressure during the deposition.Comment: 1
Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg interferometry in pair production from counterpropagating lasers
The rate of electron-positron pair production in linearly polarized
counter-propagating lasers is evaluated from a recently discovered solution of
the time-dependent Dirac equation. The latter is solved in momentum space where
it is formally equivalent to the Schr\"odinger equation describing a strongly
driven two-level system. The solution is found from a simple transformation of
the Dirac equation and is given in compact form in terms of the
doubly-confluent Heun's function. By using the analogy with the two-level
system, it is shown that for high-intensity lasers, pair production occurs
through periodic non-adiabatic transitions when the adiabatic energy gap is
minimal. These transitions give rise to an intricate interference pattern in
the pair spectrum, reminiscent of the Landau-Zener-St\"uckelberg phenomenon in
molecular physics: the accumulated phase result in constructive or destructive
interference. The adiabatic-impulse model is used to study this phenomenon and
shows an excellent agreement with the exact result.Comment: 22 pages, 7 figure
Grain Surface Models and Data for Astrochemistry
AbstractThe cross-disciplinary field of astrochemistry exists to understand the formation, destruction, and survival of molecules in astrophysical environments. Molecules in space are synthesized via a large variety of gas-phase reactions, and reactions on dust-grain surfaces, where the surface acts as a catalyst. A broad consensus has been reached in the astrochemistry community on how to suitably treat gas-phase processes in models, and also on how to present the necessary reaction data in databases; however, no such consensus has yet been reached for grain-surface processes. A team of ∼25 experts covering observational, laboratory and theoretical (astro)chemistry met in summer of 2014 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden with the aim to provide solutions for this problem and to review the current state-of-the-art of grain surface models, both in terms of technical implementation into models as well as the most up-to-date information available from experiments and chemical computations. This review builds on the results of this workshop and gives an outlook for future directions
The emergence of Vibrio pathogens in Europe: ecology, evolution, and pathogenesis
Global change has caused a worldwide increase in reports of Vibrio-associated diseases with ecosystem-wide impacts on humans and marine animals. In Europe, higher prevalence of human infections followed regional climatic trends with outbreaks occurring during episodes of unusually warm weather. Similar patterns were also observed in Vibrio-associated diseases affecting marine organisms such as fish, bivalves and corals. Basic knowledge is still lacking on the ecology and evolutionary biology of these bacteria as well as on their virulence mechanisms. Current limitations in experimental systems to study infection and the lack of diagnostic tools still prevent a better understanding of Vibrio emergence. A major challenge is to foster cooperation between fundamental and applied research in order to investigate the consequences of pathogen emergence in natural Vibrio populations and answer federative questions that meet societal needs. Here we report the proceedings of the first European workshop dedicated to these specific goals of the Vibrio research community by connecting current knowledge to societal issues related to ocean health and food security

The structures and properties of proton- and alkali-bound cysteine dimers
The proton-, lithium-, and sodium-bound cysteine dimers have been investigated in a joint computational and experimental infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) study. IRMPD spectra in the 1000–2000 cm−1 region show that protonation is localized on an amine group, and that intermolecular hydrogen bonding occurs between the protonated amine and the carbonyl oxygen of the neutral Cys moiety. Alkali-bound dimers adopt structures reminiscent of those observed for the monomeric Cys·Li+ and Cys·Na+ species. Calculations of the heavier Cys2·M+ (M = K, Rb or Cs) species suggest that these are significantly less strongly bound than the lighter (M = H, Li, or Na) dimers.We gratefully acknowledge high performance computing support from the SHARCNET consortium of Compute Canada. Influence of mercury exposure on blood pressure, resting heart rate and heart rate variability in French Polynesians: a cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Populations which diet is rich in seafood are highly exposed to contaminants such as mercury, which could affect cardiovascular risk factors</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>To assess the associations between mercury and blood pressure (BP), resting heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) among French Polynesians</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were collected among 180 adults (≥ 18 years) and 101 teenagers (12-17 years). HRV was measured using a two-hour ambulatory electrocardiogram (Holter) and BP was measured using a standardized protocol. The association between mercury and HRV and BP parameters was studied using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA)</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among teenagers, the high frequency (HF) decreased between the 2<sup>nd </sup>and 3<sup>rd </sup>tertile (380 vs. 204 ms<sup>2</sup>, p = 0.03) and a similar pattern was observed for the square root of the mean squared differences of successive R-R intervals (rMSSD) (43 vs. 30 ms, p = 0.005) after adjusting for confounders. In addition, the ratio low/high frequency (LF/HF) increased between the 2<sup>nd </sup>and 3<sup>rd </sup>tertile (2.3 vs. 3.0, p = 0.04). Among adults, the standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDNN) tended to decrease between the 1<sup>st </sup>and 2<sup>nd </sup>tertile (84 vs. 75 ms, p = 0.069) after adjusting for confounders. Furthermore, diastolic BP tended to increase between the 2<sup>nd </sup>and 3<sup>rd </sup>tertile (86 vs. 91 mm Hg, p = 0.09). No significant difference was observed in resting HR or pulse pressure (PP)</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Mercury was associated with decreased HRV among French Polynesian teenagers while no significant association was observed with resting HR, BP, or PP among teenagers or adults</p
