Electrophysiological evidence for changes in attentional orienting and selection in functional somatic symptoms
Neurophysiology Objective: We investigated changes in attention mechanisms in people who report a high number of somatic symptoms which cannot be associated with a physical cause. Method: Based on scores on the Somatoform Disorder Questionnaire (SDQ-20; Nijenhuis et al., 1996) we compared two non-clinical groups, one with high symptoms on the SDQ-20 and a control group with low or no symptoms. We recorded EEG whilst participants performed an exogenous tactile attention task where they had to discriminate between tactile targets following a tactile cue to the same or opposite hand. Results: The neural marker of attentional orienting to the body, the Late Somatosensory Negativity (LSN), was diminished in the high symptoms group and attentional modulation of touch processing was prolonged at mid and enhanced at later latency stages in this group. Conclusion: These results confirm that attentional processes are altered in people with somatic symptoms, even in a non-clinical group. Furthermore, the observed pattern fits explanations of changes in prior beliefs or expectations leading to diminished amplitudes of the marker of attentional orienting to the body (i.e. the LSN) and enhanced attentional gain of touch processing. Significance: This study shows that high somatic symptoms are associated with neurocognitive attention changes
The Optimal Rate of Decline of an Inefficient Industry
This paper considers the problem of the optimal time path of contraction of an industry which has been hit by foreign competition, and shows that in general, along the optimal path, a production subsidy is warranted. The optimal subsidy trades off the benefit of unemployment in speeding up the approach to the new long-run equilibrium against the cost of lost output in the ‘inefficient’ industry. The dynamic shadow price of labour in this industry is also derived and shown to be always positive, though below the industry wage rate

Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines
Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and
splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject
areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It
is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting
relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to
fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is
presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach
has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and
integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their
definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the
relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of
complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The
fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as
Dirichlet averages are presented
Ethnic variations in the relationship between multiple stress domains and use of several types of tobacco/nicotine products among a diverse sample of adults.
IntroductionFinancial strain and discrimination are consistent predictors of negative health outcomes and maladaptive coping behaviors, including tobacco use. Although there is considerable information exploring stress and smoking, limited research has examined the relationship between patterns of stress domains and specific tobacco/nicotine product use. Even fewer studies have assessed ethnic variations in these relationships.MethodsThis study investigated the relationship between discrimination and financial strain and current tobacco/nicotine product use and explored the ethnic variation in these relationships among diverse sample of US adults (N = 1068). Separate logistic regression models assessed associations between stress domains and tobacco/nicotine product use, adjusting for covariates (e.g., age, gender, race/ethnicity, and household income). Due to statistically significant differences, the final set of models was stratified by race/ethnicity.ResultsHigher levels of discrimination were associated with higher odds of all three tobacco/nicotine product categories. Financial strain was positively associated with combustible tobacco and combined tobacco/nicotine product use. Financial strain was especially risky for Non-Hispanic Whites (AOR:1.191, 95%CI:1.083-1.309) and Blacks/African Americans (AOR:1.542, 95%CI:1.106-2.148), as compared to other groups, whereas discrimination was most detrimental for Asians/Pacific Islanders (AOR:3.827, 95%CI:1.832-7.997) and Hispanics/Latinas/Latinos (AOR:2.517, 95%CI:1.603-3.952).ConclusionsFindings suggest discrimination and financial stressors are risk factors for use of multiple tobacco/nicotine products, highlighting the importance of prevention research that accounts for these stressors. Because ethnic groups may respond differently to stress/strain, prevention research needs to identify cultural values, beliefs, and coping strategies that can buffer the negative consequences of discrimination and financial stressors
Vector meson spectral function and dilepton rate in an effective mean field model
We have studied the vector meson spectral function (VMSF) in a hot and dense
medium within an effective QCD model namely the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and
its Polyakov Loop extended version (PNJL) with and without the effect of
isoscalar vector interaction (IVI). The effect of the IVI has been taken into
account using the ring approximation. We obtained the dilepton production rate
(DPR) using the VMSF and observed that at moderate temperature it is enhanced
in the PNJL model as compared to the NJL and Born rate due to the suppression

The transient response of global-mean precipitation to increasing carbon dioxide levels
The transient response of global-mean precipitation to an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels of 1% yr(-1) is investigated in 13 fully coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs) and compared to a period of stabilization. During the period of stabilization, when carbon dioxide levels are held constant at twice their unperturbed level and the climate left to warm, precipitation increases at a rate of similar to 2.4% per unit of global-mean surface-air-temperature change in the AOGCMs. However, when carbon dioxide levels are increasing, precipitation increases at a smaller rate of similar to 1.5% per unit of global-mean surface-air-temperature change. This difference can be understood by decomposing the precipitation response into an increase from the response to the global surface-temperature increase (and the climate feedbacks it induces), and a fast atmospheric response to the carbon dioxide radiative forcing that acts to decrease precipitation. According to the multi-model mean, stabilizing atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide would lead to a greater rate of precipitation change per unit of global surface-temperature change

Cue-locked lateralized components in a tactile spatial attention task: Evidence for a functional dissociation between ADAN and LSN
ERP studies investigating the control processes responsible for spatial orienting in touch have consistently observed that the anterior directing attention negativity (ADAN) elicited by an attention-directing cue is followed by a sustained negativity contralateral to the cued hand. Recent evidence suggested that the later negativity, labeled late somatotopic negativity (LSN), might reflect distinct neurocognitive processes from those associated with the ADAN. To investigate the functional meaning of the ADAN and LSN components, we measured ERPs elicited by bilateral tactile cues indicating to covertly shift tactile attention to the left or right hand. Participants performed two spatial attention tasks that differed only for the difficulty of the target/nontarget discrimination at attended locations. The LSN but not the ADAN was sensitive to our experimental manipulation of task difficulty, suggesting that this component might reflect sensory-specific preparatory processes prior to a forthcoming tactile stimulus

The Radiative Forcing Model Intercomparison Project (RFMIP): experimental protocol for CMIP6
The phrasing of the first of three questions motivating CMIP6 – “How does the Earth system respond to forcing?” – suggests that forcing is always well-known, yet the radiative forcing to which this question refers has historically been uncertain in coordinated experiments even as understanding of how best to infer radiative forcing has evolved. The Radiative Forcing Model Intercomparison Project (RFMIP) endorsed by CMIP6 seeks to provide a foundation for answering the question through three related activities: (i) accurate characterization of the effective radiative forcing relative to a near-preindustrial baseline and careful diagnosis of the components of this forcing; (ii) assessment of the absolute accuracy of clear-sky radiative transfer parameterizations against reference models on the global scales relevant for climate modeling; and (iii) identification of robust model responses to tightly specified aerosol radiative forcing from 1850 to present. Complete characterization of effective radiative forcing can be accomplished with 180 years (Tier 1) of atmosphere-only simulation using a sea-surface temperature and sea ice concentration climatology derived from the host model's preindustrial control simulation. Assessment of parameterization error requires trivial amounts of computation but the development of small amounts of infrastructure: new, spectrally detailed diagnostic output requested as two snapshots at present-day and preindustrial conditions, and results from the model's radiation code applied to specified atmospheric conditions. The search for robust responses to aerosol changes relies on the CMIP6 specification of anthropogenic aerosol properties; models using this specification can contribute to RFMIP with no additional simulation, while those using a full aerosol model are requested to perform at least one and up to four 165-year coupled ocean–atmosphere simulations at Tier 1
The Remarkable Mid-Infrared Jet of Massive Young Stellar Object G35.20-0.74
The young massive stellar object G35.20-0.74 was observed in the mid-infrared
using T-ReCS on Gemini South. Previous observations have shown that the near
infrared emission has a fan-like morphology that is consistent with emission
from the northern lobe of a bipolar radio jet known to be associated with this
source. Mid-infrared observations presented in this paper show a monopolar
jet-like morphology as well, and it is argued that the mid-infrared emission
observed is dominated by thermal continuum emission from dust. The mid-infrared
emission nearest the central stellar source is believed to be directly heated
dust on the walls of the outflow cavity. The hydroxyl, water, and methanol
masers associated with G35.20-0.74 are spatially located along these
mid-infrared cavity walls. Narrow jet or outflow cavities such as this may also
be the locations of the linear distribution of methanol masers that are found
associated with massive young stellar objects. The fact that G35.20-0.74 has
mid-infrared emission that is dominated by the outflow, rather than disk
emission, is a caution to those that consider mid-infrared emission from young
