Investigations of simulated aircraft flight through thunderstorm outflows

    Get PDF
The effects of wind shear on aircraft flying through thunderstorm gust fronts were investigated. A computer program was developed to solve the two dimensional, nonlinear equations of aircraft motion, including wind shear. The procedure described and documented accounts for spatial and temporal variations of the aircraft within the flow regime. Analysis of flight paths and control inputs necessary to maintain specified trajectories for aircraft having characteristics of DC-8, B-747, augmentor wing STOL, and DHC-6 aircraft was recorded. From the analysis an attempt was made to find criteria for reduction of the hazards associated with landing through thunderstorm gust fronts

Current research on aviation weather (bibliography), 1979

    Get PDF
The titles, managers, supporting organizations, performing organizations, investigators and objectives of 127 current research projects in advanced meteorological instruments, forecasting, icing, lightning, visibility, low level wind shear, storm hazards/severe storms, and turbulence are tabulated and cross-referenced. A list of pertinent reference material produced through the above tabulated research activities is given. The acquired information is assembled in bibliography form to provide a readily available source of information in the area of aviation meteorology

Significance of elevated K/Rb ratios in lower crustal rocks

The granulite uncertainty principle, which states that it is difficult or impossible to determine with certainty the maximum geopressure and geotemperature that a granulite has experienced, is addressed. Also, geochemical fingerprinting cannot always be used reliably in the nebulous region that is transitional between metamorphic and igneous environments. Ion exchange thermometers are typically useful to approximately 800 C in slowly cooled plutonic rocks unless one uses a reintegration technique on unmixed minerals, or unless a metastable mineral assemblage can be observed. It is argued that in most granulites, fossil temperatures are typically obliterated by reequilibration and/or deformation during slow cooling. Granulite metamorphism may be further complicated by the common association with igneous activity. The previously-used geochemical indicators such as high K/Rb ratios and LIL depletion may not be strictly the result of granulite facies metamorphic depletion, but also may result from igneous processes, which depend on bulk and mineral compositions and on the mineralogy of the protolith. Detailed geologic mapping will be the ultimate arbitrator of whether a given geochemical signature is the result of igneous or metamorphic processes

Engineering handbook on the atmospheric environmental guidelines for use in wind turbine generator development

    Get PDF
The guidelines are given in the form of design criteria relative to wind speed, wind shear, turbulence, wind direction, ice and snow loading, and other climatological parameters which include rain, hail, thermal effects, abrasive and corrosive effects, and humidity. This report is a presentation of design criteria in an engineering format which can be directly input to wind turbine generator design computations. Guidelines are also provided for developing specialized wind turbine generators or for designing wind turbine generators which are to be used in a special region of the United States

Pilot-aircraft system reponse to wind shear

    Get PDF
The nonlinear aircraft motion and automatic control model is expanded to incorporate the human pilot into simulations of aircraft response to wind to wind shear. The human pilot is described by a constant gains lag filter. Two runs are carried out using pilot transfer functions. Fixed-stick, autopilot, and manned computer simulations are made with an aircraft having characteristics of a small commuter type aircraft flown through longitudinal winds measured by a Doppler radar beamed along the glide slope. Simulations are also made flying an aircraft through sinusoidal head wind and tail wind shears at the phugoid frequency to evaluate the response of manned aircraft in thunderstorm wind environments

Wireworm Control using Fodder Rape and Mustard – evaluating the use of brassica green manures for the control of wireworm (Agriotes spp.) in organic crops

    Get PDF
In a field experiment at ADAS Pwllpeiran in 2001, brassica green manures were grown for 6 weeks and dug in before planting King Edward potatoes, to see if they suppressed wireworm in the crop. There was a trend for potatoes grown after mustard to suffer less damage from both wireworms and slugs than potatoes grown after fodder rape or no green manure, but the differences were not significant. Further trials, with longer green manuring periods, are needed to establish if there is a benefit, and whether the breakdown products of brassica green manures are toxic to wireworms

The diffuse X-ray spectrum from 14-200 keV as measured on OSO-5

    Get PDF
The measurement of energy spectrum of the diffuse component of cosmic X-ray flux made on the OSO-5 spacecraft is described. The contributions to the total counting rate of the actively shielded X-ray detector are considered in some detail and the techniques used to eliminate the non-cosmic components are described. Positive values for the cosmic flux are obtained in seven energy channels between 14 and 200 keV and two upper limits are obtained between 200 and 254 keV. The results can be fitted by a power law spectrum. A critical comparison is made with the OSO-3 results. Conclusions show that the reported break in the energy spectrum at 40 keV is probably produced by an erroneous correction for the radioactivity induced in the detector on each passage through the intense charged particle fluxes in the South Atlantic anomaly
