On the Hierarchical Preconditioning of the PMCHWT Integral Equation on Simply and Multiply Connected Geometries
We present a hierarchical basis preconditioning strategy for the
Poggio-Miller-Chang-Harrington-Wu-Tsai (PMCHWT) integral equation considering
both simply and multiply connected geometries.To this end, we first consider
the direct application of hierarchical basis preconditioners, developed for the
Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE), to the PMCHWT. It is notably found
that, whereas for the EFIE a diagonal preconditioner can be used for obtaining
the hierarchical basis scaling factors, this strategy is catastrophic in the
case of the PMCHWT since it leads to a severly ill-conditioned PMCHWT system in
the case of multiply connected geometries. We then proceed to a theoretical
analysis of the effect of hierarchical bases on the PMCHWT operator for which
we obtain the correct scaling factors and a provably effective preconditioner
for both low frequencies and mesh refinements. Numerical results will
corroborate the theory and show the effectiveness of our approach
Galaxy Halo Masses from Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing
We present measurements of the extended dark halo profiles of bright early
type galaxies at redshifts 0.1 to 0.9 obtained via galaxy-galaxy lensing
analysis of images taken at the CFHT using the UH8K CCD mosaic camera. Six half
degree fields were observed for a total of 2 hours each in I and V, resulting
in catalogs containing ~20 000 galaxies per field. We used V-I color and I
magnitude to select bright early type galaxies as the lens galaxies, yielding a
sample of massive lenses with fairly well determined redshifts and absolute
magnitudes M ~ M_* \pm 1. We paired these with faint galaxies lying at angular
distances 20" to 60", corresponding to physical radii of 26 to 77 kpc (z = 0.1)
and 105 to 315 kpc (z = 0.9), and computed the mean tangential shear of the
faint galaxies. The shear falls off with radius roughly as expected for flat
rotation curve halos. The shear values were weighted in proportion to the
square root of the luminosity of the lens galaxy. Our results give a value for
the average mean rotation velocity of an L_* galaxy halo at r~50-200 kpc of v_*
= 238^{+27}_{-30} km per sec for a flat lambda (Omega_m0 = 0.3, Omega_l0 = 0.7)
cosmology (v_* = 269^{+34}_{-39} km per sec for Einstein-de Sitter), and with
little evidence for evolution with redshift. We compare to halo masses measured
by other groups/techniques. We find a mass-to-light ratio of ~121\pm28h(r/100
kpc) and these halos constitute Omega ~0.04 \pm 0.01(r/100 kpc) of closure

Spectrum of topics for world congresses and other activities of the International Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM) : a first proposal
Background: One of the objectives of the International Society for Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine is to improve the continuity of World Congresses. This requires the development of an abstract topic list for use in congress announcements and abstract submissions.
Methods: An abstract topic list was developed on the basis of the definitions of human functioning and rehabilitation research, which define 5 main areas of research (biosciences in rehabilitation, biomedical rehabilitation sciences and engineering, clinical Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) sciences, integrative rehabilitation sciences, and human functioning sciences). For the abstract topic list, these research areas were grouped according to the proposals of congress streams. In a second step, the first version of the list was systematically compared with the topics of the 2003 ISPRM World Congress.
Results: The resulting comprehensive abstract topic list contains 5 chapters according to the definition of human functioning and rehabilitation research. Due to the high significance of clinical research, clinical PRM sciences were placed at the top of the list, comprising all relevant health conditions treated in PRM services. For congress announcements a short topic list was derived.
Discussion: The ISPRM topic list is sustainable and covers a full range of topics. It may be useful for congresses and elsewhere in structuring research in PRM
Transparent conducting sol-gel ATO coatings for display applications by an improved dip coating technique
Transparent conducting coatings of sol—gel ATO (antimony-doped tin oxide) were used to improve surface smoothness of commercial sputter-deposited ITO (indium tin oxide) coatings for application as display electrodes. In order to overcome the deteriorating evaporation-cooling during dip coating, the coating solution was heated moderately to 25 °C thus providing the substrate with the required heat. This way, the surface roughness of the ITO could be reduced with an only 45 nm thick ATO coating to Rpv = 3.8 nm (Ra = 0.4 nm) compared to 31 nm (3.8 nm) for the ITO substrate. Another benefit of such additional coating is the possibility to tailor surface properties of the electrodes in wide ranges. This was used to increase the work function of the ITO substrate from initially 4.3—4.6 eV to about 4.8—5.2 eV by the ATO coating
A Survey of CH3CN and HC3N in Protoplanetary Disks
The organic content of protoplanetary disks sets the initial compositions of
planets and comets, thereby influencing subsequent chemistry that is possible
in nascent planetary systems. We present observations of the complex
nitrile-bearing species CH3CN and HC3N towards the disks around the T Tauri
stars AS 209, IM Lup, LkCa 15, and V4046 Sgr as well as the Herbig Ae stars MWC
480 and HD 163296. HC3N is detected towards all disks except IM Lup, and CH3CN
is detected towards V4046 Sgr, MWC 480, and HD 163296. Rotational temperatures
derived for disks with multiple detected lines range from 29-73K, indicating
emission from the temperate molecular layer of the disk. V4046 Sgr and MWC 480
radial abundance profiles are constrained using a parametric model; the
gas-phase CH3CN and HC3N abundances with respect to HCN are a few to tens of
percent in the inner 100 AU of the disk, signifying a rich nitrile chemistry at
planet- and comet-forming disk radii. We find consistent relative abundances of
CH3CN, HC3N, and HCN between our disk sample, protostellar envelopes, and solar
system comets; this is suggestive of a robust nitrile chemistry with similar
outcomes under a wide range of physical conditions
The Universality of the Fundamental Plane of E and S0 Galaxies. Spectroscopic data
We present here central velocity dispersion measurements for 325 early-type
galaxies in eight clusters and groups of galaxies, including new observations
for 212 galaxies. The clusters and groups are the A262, A1367, Coma (A1656),
A2634, Cancer and Pegasus clusters, and the NGC 383 and NGC 507 groups. The new
measurements were derived from medium dispersion spectra, that cover 600 A
centered on the Mg Ib triplet at lambda ~ 5175. Velocity dispersions were
measured using the Tonry & Davis cross-correlation method, with a typical
accuracy of 6%. A detailed comparison with other data sources is made.Comment: 12 pages, 5 tables, 3 figures, to appear in AJ. Note that tables 2

Migration with local public goods and the gains from changing places
Without public goods and under fairly standard assumptions, in Hammond and Sempere (J Pub Econ Theory, 8: 145–170, 2006) we show that freeing migration enhances the potential Pareto gains from free trade. Here, we present a generalization allowing local public goods subject to congestion. Unlike the standard literature on fiscal externalities, our result relies on fixing both local public goods and congestion levels at their status quo values. This allows constrained efficient and potentially Pareto improving population exchanges regulated only through appropriate residence charges, which can be regarded as Pigouvian congestion taxes
Line-Strength Indices in Bright Spheroidals: Evidence for a Stellar Population Dichotomy between Spheroidal and Elliptical Galaxies
We present new measurements of central line-strength indices (namely Mg2,
, and Hbeta and gradients for a sample of 6 bright spheroidal galaxies
(Sph's) in the Virgo cluster. Comparison with similar measurements for
elliptical galaxies (E's), galactic globular clusters (GGC's), and stellar
population models yield the following results: (1) In contrast with bright E's,
bright Sph's are consistent with solar abundance [Mg/Fe] ratios; (2) Bright
Sph's exhibit metallicities ranging from values typical for metal-rich GGC's to
those for E's; (3) Although absolute mean ages are quite model dependent, we
find evidence that the stellar populations of some (if not all) Sph's look
significantly younger than GGC's; and (4) Mg2 gradients of bright Sph's are
significantly shallower than those of E galaxies. We conclude that the
dichotomy found in the structural properties of Sph and E galaxies is also
observed in their stellar populations. A tentative interpretation in terms of

Antitubercular specific activity of ibuprofen and the other 2-arylpropanoic acids using the HT-SPOTi whole-cell phenotypic assay
Objectives: Lead antituberculosis (anti-TB) molecules with novel mechanisms of action are urgently required to fuel the anti-TB drug discovery pipeline. The aim of this study was to validate the use of the high-throughput spot culture growth inhibition (HT-SPOTi) assay for screening libraries of compounds against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and to study the inhibitory effect of ibuprofen (IBP) and the other 2-arylpropanoic acids on the growth inhibition of M tuberculosis and other mycobacterial species.
Methods: The HT-SPOTi method was validated not only with known drugs but also with a library of 47 confirmed anti-TB active compounds published in the ChEMBL database. Three over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were also included in the screening. The 2-arylpropanoic acids, including IBP, were comprehensively evaluated against phenotypically and physiologically different strains of mycobacteria, and their cytotoxicity was determined against murine RAW264.7 macrophages. Furthermore, a comparative bioinformatic analysis was employed to propose a potential mycobacterial target.
Results: IBP showed antitubercular properties while carprofen was the most potent among the 2-arylpropanoic class. A 3,5-dinitro-IBP derivative was found to be more potent than IBP but equally selective. Other synthetic derivatives of IBP were less active, and the free carboxylic acid of IBP seems to be essential for its anti-TB activity. IBP, carprofen and the 3,5-dinitro-IBP derivative exhibited activity against multidrug-resistant isolates and stationary phase bacilli. On the basis of the human targets of the 2-arylpropanoic analgesics, the protein initiation factor infB (Rv2839c) of M tuberculosis was proposed as a potential molecular target.
Conclusions: The HT-SPOTi method can be employed reliably and reproducibly to screen the antimicrobial potency of different compounds. IBP demonstrated specific antitubercular activity, while carprofen was the most selective agent among the 2-arylpropanoic class. Activity against stationary phase bacilli and multidrug-resistant isolates permits us to speculate a novel mechanism of antimycobacterial action. Further medicinal chemistry and target elucidation studies could potentially lead to new therapies against TB
