Quantifying parameter uncertainties in optical scatterometry using Bayesian inversion

We present a Newton-like method to solve inverse problems and to quantify parameter uncertainties. We apply the method to parameter reconstruction in optical scatterometry, where we take into account a priori information and measurement uncertainties using a Bayesian approach. Further, we discuss the influence of numerical accuracy on the reconstruction result.Comment: Proceedings article, SPIE conference "Modeling Aspects in Optical Metrology VI

hp-finite-elements for simulating electromagnetic fields in optical devices with rough textures

The finite-element method is a preferred numerical method when electromagnetic fields at high accuracy are to be computed in nano-optics design. Here, we demonstrate a finite-element method using hp-adaptivity on tetrahedral meshes for computation of electromagnetic fields in a device with rough textures. The method allows for efficient computations on meshes with strong variations in element sizes. This enables to use precise geometry resolution of the rough textures. Convergence to highly accurate results is observed.Comment: Proceedings article, SPIE conference "Optical Systems Design 2015: Computational Optics

Monitoring of Deep Fluids in the Nankai Subduction Complex, SE offshore Japan

Fluids are of great importance for various geological processes. To improve our understanding of fluid generation and migration in the Nankai Trough subduction complex, SE offshore Japan, this PhD thesis uses different borehole monitoring techniques that were applied in the course of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment. Long-term monitoring with a SmartPlug borehole observatory was conducted at a splay fault system cutting through the accretionary prism. Further landward, beneath the Kumano forearc basin, information about in situ composition of fluids was obtained by drilling mud gas monitoring and sampling during riser drilling with drilling vessel Chikyu. Long-term pressure data revealed that the fluid pressure data is affected by a wide range of natural signals. Tidal noise was used to estimate hydrogeological fault zone properties. Beneath the Kumano forearc basin, fluid migration and mixing in the accretionary prism is supported by analyses of drilling mud gas focusing on noble gas isotopes and hydrocarbon gas composition. Fluid pathways and mechanisms of fluid migration remain unclear

Toxicity of dietary methylmercury to fish: Derivation of ecologically meaningful threshold concentrations

Threshold concentrations associated with adverse effects of dietary exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) were derived from published results of laboratory studies on a variety of fish species. Adverse effects related to mortality were uncommon, whereas adverse effects related to growth occurred only at dietary MeHg concentrations exceeding 2.5 µg g −1 wet weight. Adverse effects on behavior of fish had a wide range of effective dietary concentrations, but generally occurred above 0.5 µg g −1 wet weight. In contrast, effects on reproduction and other subclinical endpoints occurred at dietary concentrations that were much lower (<0.2 µg g −1 wet wt). Field studies generally lack information on dietary MeHg exposure, yet available data indicate that comparable adverse effects have been observed in wild fish in environments corresponding to high and low MeHg contamination of food webs and are in agreement with the threshold concentrations derived here from laboratory studies. These thresholds indicate that while differences in species sensitivity to MeHg exposure appear considerable, chronic dietary exposure to low concentrations of MeHg may have significant adverse effects on wild fish populations but remain little studied compared to concentrations in mammals or birds. Fine motor difficulties: the need for advocating for the role of occupational therapy in schools

Background: Fine motor difficulties can impact on the academic, social and emotional development of a student. Aim: The aims of this paper are to: (i) investigate the need for support to students experiencing fine motor difficulties from the perspective of their classroom teachers, and (ii) report on the level of knowledge teachers have in regard to the role of occupational therapists in supporting students with fine motor difficulties. Methods: Fifteen teachers from a stratified random sample of public schools within two regions of Victoria, Australia, were interviewed in this qualitative, grounded theory investigation. Results: Results showed that the current level of support for students with fine motor difficulties is inadequate. Conclusion: Occupational therapists in Victoria need to advocate their role in developing the fine motor skills of students at both an organisational and an individual level in order to increase the access of students with fine motor difficulties to occupational therapy services. <br /

To respond or not to respond - a personal perspective of intestinal tolerance

Get PDF
For many years, the intestine was one of the poor relations of the immunology world, being a realm inhabited mostly by specialists and those interested in unusual phenomena. However, this has changed dramatically in recent years with the realization of how important the microbiota is in shaping immune function throughout the body, and almost every major immunology institution now includes the intestine as an area of interest. One of the most important aspects of the intestinal immune system is how it discriminates carefully between harmless and harmful antigens, in particular, its ability to generate active tolerance to materials such as commensal bacteria and food proteins. This phenomenon has been recognized for more than 100 years, and it is essential for preventing inflammatory disease in the intestine, but its basis remains enigmatic. Here, I discuss the progress that has been made in understanding oral tolerance during my 40 years in the field and highlight the topics that will be the focus of future research
