Two-flavour Schwinger model with dynamical fermions in the L\"uscher formalism
We report preliminary results for 2D massive QED with two flavours of Wilson
fermions, using the Hermitean variant of L\"uscher's bosonization technique.
The chiral condensate and meson masses are obtained. The simplicity of the
model allows for high statistics simulations close to the chiral and continuum
limit, both in the quenched approximation and with dynamical fermions.Comment: Talk presented at LATTICE96(algorithms), 3 pages, 3 Postscript

Element-centric clustering comparison unifies overlaps and hierarchy
Clustering is one of the most universal approaches for understanding complex
data. A pivotal aspect of clustering analysis is quantitatively comparing
clusterings; clustering comparison is the basis for many tasks such as
clustering evaluation, consensus clustering, and tracking the temporal
evolution of clusters. In particular, the extrinsic evaluation of clustering
methods requires comparing the uncovered clusterings to planted clusterings or
known metadata. Yet, as we demonstrate, existing clustering comparison measures
have critical biases which undermine their usefulness, and no measure
accommodates both overlapping and hierarchical clusterings. Here we unify the
comparison of disjoint, overlapping, and hierarchically structured clusterings
by proposing a new element-centric framework: elements are compared based on
the relationships induced by the cluster structure, as opposed to the
traditional cluster-centric philosophy. We demonstrate that, in contrast to
standard clustering similarity measures, our framework does not suffer from
critical biases and naturally provides unique insights into how the clusterings
differ. We illustrate the strengths of our framework by revealing new insights
into the organization of clusters in two applications: the improved
classification of schizophrenia based on the overlapping and hierarchical
community structure of fMRI brain networks, and the disentanglement of various
social homophily factors in Facebook social networks. The universality of
clustering suggests far-reaching impact of our framework throughout all areas
of science
Payload/orbiter contamination control requirement study: Spacelab configuration contamination study
The assessment of the Spacelab carrier induced contaminant environment was continued, and the ability of Spacelab to meet established contamination control criteria for the space transportation system program was determined. The primary areas considered included: (1) updating, refining, and improving the Spacelab contamination computer model and contamination analysis methodology, (2) establishing the resulting adjusted induced environment predictions for comparison with the applicable criteria, (3) determining the Spacelab design and operational requirements necessary to meet the criteria, (4) conducting mission feasibility analyses of the combined Spacelab/Orbiter contaminant environment for specific proposed mission and payload mixes, and (5) establishing a preliminary Spacelab mission support plan as well as model interface requirements; A summary of those activities conducted to date with respect to the modelling, analysis, and predictions of the induced environment, including any modifications in approach or methodology utilized in the contamination assessment of the Spacelab carrier, was presented
The 2+1 flavor topological susceptibility from the asqtad action at 0.06 fm
We report new data for the topological susceptibility computed on 2+1 flavor
dynamical configurations with lattice spacing 0.06 fm, generated with the
asqtad action. The topological susceptibility is computed by HYP smearing and
compared with rooted staggered chiral perturbation theory as the pion mass goes
to zero. At 0.06 fm, the raw data is already quite close to the continuum
extrapolated values obtained from coarser lattices. These results provide a
further test of the asqtad action with rooted staggered flavors.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, talk presented at the XXV International Symposium

Experimental investigation of contamination prevention techniques to cryogenic surfaces on board orbiting spacecraft
Within the simulation limitations of on-orbit conditions, it was demonstrated that a helium purge system could be an effective method for reducing the incoming flux of contaminant species. Although a generalized purge system was employed in conjunction with basic telescope components, the simulation provided data that could be used for further modeling and design of a specific helium injection system. Experimental telescope pressures required for 90% attenuation appeared to be slightly higher (factor of 2 to 5). Cooling the helium purge gas and telescope components from 300 to 140 K had no measurable effect on stopping efficiency of a given mass flow of helium from the diffuse injector
The QCD equation of state with asqtad staggered fermions
We report on our result for the equation of state (EOS) with a Symanzik
improved gauge action and the asqtad improved staggered fermion action at
and 6. In our dynamical simulations with 2+1 flavors we use the inexact
R algorithm and here we estimate the finite step-size systematic error on the
EOS. Finally we discuss the non-zero chemical potential extension of the EOS
and give some preliminary results.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, presented at Lattice2006(High Temperature and

2D Yang-Mills Theory as a Matrix String Theory
Quantization of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory on a torus in the gauge
where the field strength is diagonal leads to twisted sectors that are
completely analogous to the ones that originate long string states in Matrix
String Theory. If these sectors are taken into account the partition function
is different from the standard one found in the literature and the invariance
of the theory under modular transformations of the torus appears to hold in a
stronger sense. The twisted sectors are in one-to-one correspondence with the
coverings of the torus without branch points, so they define by themselves a
string theory. A possible duality between this string theory and the
Gross-Taylor string is discussed, and the problems that one encounters in
generalizing this approach to interacting strings are pointed out. This talk is
based on a previous paper by the same authors, but it contains some new results
and a better interpretation of the results already obtained.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures included with epsf. Talk presented at the

Instantons and the Ground State of the Massive Schwinger Model
We study the massive Schwinger model, quantum electrodynamics of massive,
Dirac fermions, in 1+1 dimensions; with space compactified to a circle. In the
limit that transitions to fermion--anti-fermion pairs can be neglected, we
study the full ground state. We focus on the effect of instantons which mediate
tunnelling transitions in the induced potential for the dynamical degree of
freedom in the gauge field.Comment: 17 pages, plain te
The Equation of State for QCD with 2+1 Flavors of Quarks
We report results for the interaction measure, pressure and energy density
for nonzero temperature QCD with 2+1 flavors of improved staggered quarks. In
our simulations we use a Symanzik improved gauge action and the Asqtad
improved staggered quark action for lattices with temporal extent and
6. The heavy quark mass is fixed at approximately the physical strange
quark mass and the two degenerate light quarks have masses or
. The calculation of the thermodynamic observables employs the integral
method where energy density and pressure are obtained by integration over the
interaction measure.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 3 tables, contribution to the XXIIIrd
