Eighth year projects and activities of the Environmental Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory (ERSAL)
Projects completed for the NASA Office of University Affairs include the application of remote sensing data in support of rehabilitation of wild fire damaged areas and the use of LANDSAT 3 return beam vidicon in forestry mapping applications. Continuing projects for that office include monitoring western Oregon timber clearcut; detecting and monitoring wheat disease; land use monitoring for tax assessment in Umatilla, Lake, and Morrow Counties; and the use of Oregon Air National Guard thermal infrared scanning data. Projects funded through other agencies include the remote sensing inventory of elk in the Blue Mountains; the estimation of burned agricultural acreage in the Willamette Valley; a resource inventory of Deschutes County; and hosting a LANDSAT digital workshop
HIV-associated multi-centric Castleman’s disease with multiple organ failure: cuccessful treatment with rituximab
Introduction:
Multicentric Castleman's Disease (MCD), a lymphoproliferative disorder associated with Human Herpes Virus-8 (HHV-8) infection, is increasing in incidence amongst HIV patients. This condition is associated with lymphadenopathy, polyclonal gammopathy, hepato-splenomegaly and systemic symptoms. A number of small studies have demonstrated the efficacy of the anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, rituximab, in treating this condition.
Case presentation:
We report the case of a 46 year old Zambian woman who presented with pyrexia, diarrhoea and vomiting, confusion, lymphadenopathy, and renal failure. She rapidly developed multiple organ failure following the initiation of treatment of MCD with rituximab. Following admission to intensive care (ICU), she received prompt multi-organ support. After 21 days on the ICU she returned to the haematology medical ward, and was discharged in remission from her disease after 149 days in hospital.
Conclusion:
Rituximab, the efficacy of which has thus far been examined predominantly in patients outside the ICU, in conjunction with extensive organ support was effective treatment for MCD with associated multiple organ failure. There is, to our knowledge, only one other published report of its successful use in an ICU setting, where it was combined with cyclophosphamide, adriamycin and prednisolone. MALT1, BCL10 and FOXP1 in salivary gland mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas
In view of the certain anatomic site-dependent frequency of chromosomal translocations involved in extranodal marginal zone B cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) pathogenesis, 17 salivary gland MALT lymphoma cases were analyzed for MALT1 and FOXP1 translocations. B cell CLL/lymphoma 10 (BCL10) and forkhead box PA (FOXP1) protein expression were studied by immunohistochemistry and translocations identified using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)-specific probes FOXP1, t(11;18)(q21;q21)/API2-MALT1 and t(14;18)(q32;q21)/IgH-MALT1. None of the 11 analyzed cases showed FOXP1 rearrangement or amplification. The t(11;18) was present in five of 13 cases and the t(14;18) in three of 13 cases. MALT1 translocations were mostly mutually exclusive except in a single case. FOXP1 protein expression showed differences in the proportion of tumor cells with nuclear expression but not in their intensity, with the exception of one case where very intense nuclear staining was noted. BCL10 nuclear expression was present in four of 17 cases, two of which lacked t(11;18). Our results suggest that MALT1-specific translocations and FOXP1 rearrangements are not commonly involved in pathogenesis. A case with strong FOXP1 protein expression indicates the possibility that the upregulation of FOXP1 expression is significant in a small subset of salivary gland MALT lymphomas. Also a single case in which both MALT1 translocations were present indicates that these are not always mutually exclusive
High frequency (HF) radar detection of the weak 2012 Indonesian tsunamis
We report here on the observation and offline detection of the weak tsunamis generated by earthquakes near Indonesia on 11 April 2012 using radar systems and tide gauges on the coasts of Sumatra and the Andaman Islands. This work extends the previous observations of the much stronger 2011 Japan tsunami. The distance offshore at which the tsunami can be detected, and hence the warning time provided, depends primarily on the bathymetry: the wider the shallow continental shelf, the greater this time. The weak Indonesia tsunamis were detected successfully in spite of the narrow shallow-water shelf offshore from the radar systems. Larger tsunamis could obviously be detected further from the coast. This paper provides further confirmation that radar is an important tool to aid in tsunami observation and warning
Energy density and pressure of long wavelength gravitational waves
Inflation leads us to expect a spectrum of gravitational waves (tensor
perturbations) extending to wavelengths much bigger than the present observable
horizon. Although these gravity waves are not directly observable, the energy
density that they contribute grows in importance during the radiation- and
dust-dominated ages of the universe. We show that the back reaction of tensor
perturbations during matter domination is limited from above, since
gravitational waves of wavelength have a share of the total energy
density during matter domination that is at most
equal to the share of the total energy density that they had when the mode
exited the Hubble radius during inflation. This work is to
be contrasted to that of Sahni, who analyzed the energy density of gravity
waves only insofar as their wavelengths are smaller than . Such a
cut-off in the spectral energy of gravity waves leads to the breakdown of
energy conservation, and we show that this anomaly is eliminated simply by
taking into account the energy density and pressure of long wavelength

The Isaacson expansion in quantum cosmology
This paper is an application of the ideas of the Born-Oppenheimer (or
slow/fast) approximation in molecular physics and of the Isaacson (or
short-wave) approximation in classical gravity to the canonical quantization of
a perturbed minisuperspace model of the kind examined by Halliwell and Hawking.
Its aim is the clarification of the role of the semiclassical approximation and
the backreaction in such a model. Approximate solutions of the quantum model
are constructed which are not semiclassical, and semiclassical solutions in

An Empirically Derived Three-Dimensional Laplace Resonance in the Gliese 876 Planetary System
We report constraints on the three-dimensional orbital architecture for all
four planets known to orbit the nearby M dwarf Gliese 876 based solely on
Doppler measurements and demanding long-term orbital stability. Our dataset
incorporates publicly available radial velocities taken with the ELODIE and
CORALIE spectrographs, HARPS, and Keck HIRES as well as previously unpublished
HIRES velocities. We first quantitatively assess the validity of the planets
thought to orbit GJ 876 by computing the Bayes factors for a variety of
different coplanar models using an importance sampling algorithm. We find that
a four-planet model is preferred over a three-planet model. Next, we apply a
Newtonian MCMC algorithm to perform a Bayesian analysis of the planet masses
and orbits using an n-body model in three-dimensional space. Based on the
radial velocities alone, we find that a 99% credible interval provides upper
limits on the mutual inclinations for the three resonant planets
( for the "c" and "b" pair and for
the "b" and "e" pair). Subsequent dynamical integrations of our posterior
sample find that the GJ 876 planets must be roughly coplanar
( and ), suggesting the amount of
planet-planet scattering in the system has been low. We investigate the
distribution of the respective resonant arguments of each planet pair and find
that at least one argument for each planet pair and the Laplace argument
librate. The libration amplitudes in our three-dimensional orbital model
supports the idea of the outer-three planets having undergone significant past
