A multisensor analysis of Nimbus-5 data recorded on 22 January 1973
The Nimbus 5 meteorological satellite has a full complement of radiation sensors. Data from these sensors were analyzed and intercompared for orbits 569 and 570. The electrically-scanning microwave radiometer (19.35-GHz region) delineated rain areas over the ocean off the U.S. east coast, in good agreement with radar imagery, and permitted the estimation of rainfall rates in this region. Residual ground water, from abnormal rainfall in the lower Mississippi Valley, was indicated under clear sky conditions by soil brightness temperature values in the Nimbus 5 electrically scanning microwave radiometer and U.S. Air Force Data Acquisition and Processing Program infrared data. The temperature-humidity infrared radiometer (6.7 micron and 11 micron) showed the height and spatial configuration of frontal clouds along the east coast and outlined the confluence of a polar jet stream with a broad subtropical jet stream along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Temperature profiles from three vertical temperature sounders are found to be in good agreement with related radiosonde ascents along orbit 569 from the subtropics to the Arctic Circle

The Nimbus 5 meteorological satellite carried aloft a full complement of radiation sensors, the data from which were analyzed and intercompared during orbits 569-570 on 22 January 1973. The electrically scanning microwave radiometer (ESMR) which sensed passive microwave radiation in the 19.35 GHz region, delineated rain areas over the ocean off the U.S. east coast, in good agreement with WSR-57 and FPS-77 radar imagery and permitted the estimation of rainfall rates in this region. Residual ground water in the lower Mississippi Valley, which resulted from abnormal rainfall in previous months, was indicated under clear sky conditions by soil brightness temperature values in the Nimbus 5 ESMR and U.S. Air Force Data Acquisition and Processing Program (DAPP) IR data. The temperature-humidity infrared radiometer showed the height and spatial configuration of frontal clouds along the east coast and outlined the confluence of a polar jet stream with a broad sub-tropical jet stream along the U.S. Gulf Coast. HI emission and absorption in nearby, gas-rich galaxies II. -- sample completion and detection of intervening absorption in NGC 5156
We present the results of a survey for intervening 21cm HI absorption in a
sample of 10 nearby, gas-rich galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All-Sky
Survey (HIPASS). This follows the six HIPASS galaxies searched in previous work
and completes our full sample. In this paper we searched for absorption along
17 sightlines with impact parameters between 6 and 46 kpc, making one new
detection. We also obtained simultaneous HI emission-line data, allowing us to
directly relate the absorption-line detection rate to the HI distribution. From
this we find the majority of the non-detections in the current sample are
because sightline does not intersect the HI disc of the galaxy at sufficiently
high column density, but that source structure is also an important factor.
The detected absorption-line arises in the galaxy NGC 5156 () at an
impact parameter of 19 kpc. The line is deep and narrow with an integrated
optical depth of 0.82 km s. High resolution Australia Telescope Compact
Array (ATCA) images at 5 and 8 GHz reveal that the background source is
resolved into two components with a separation of 2.6 arcsec (500 pc at the
redshift of the galaxy), with the absorption likely occurring against a single
component. We estimate that the ratio of the spin temperature and covering
factor, , is approximately 950 K in the outer disc of NGC
5156, but further observations using VLBI would allow us to accurately measure
the covering factor and spin temperature of the gas.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figure
Atomic scale friction of molecular adsorbates during diffusion
Experimental observations suggest that molecular adsorbates exhibit a larger
friction coefficient than atomic species of comparable mass, yet the origin of
this increased friction is not well understood. We present a study of the
microscopic origins of friction experienced by molecular adsorbates during
surface diffusion. Helium spin-echo measurements of a range of five-membered
aromatic molecules, cyclopentadienyl (Cp), pyrrole and thiophene, on a
copper(111) surface are compared with molecular dynamics simulations of the
respective systems. The adsorbates have different chemical interactions with
the surface and differ in bonding geometry, yet the measurements show that the
friction is greater than 2 ps for all these molecules. We demonstrate
that the internal and external degrees of freedom of these adsorbate species
are a key factor in the underlying microscopic processes and identify the
rotation modes as the ones contributing most to the total measured friction
coefficient

Background Mechanistic studies suggest that aldosterone impairs glucose metabolism. We investigated the cross-sectional associations of aldosterone and plasma renin activity with fasting plasma glucose, insulin resistance ( IR ), β-cell function, and longitudinal association with incident diabetes mellitus among adults in MESA (the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis) prospective cohort study. Methods and Results Homeostatic model assessment of IR ( HOMA 2- IR ) and HOMA 2-β were used to estimate IR and β-cell function, respectively. Incident diabetes mellitus was defined as fasting plasma glucose ≥126 mg/dL or anti-diabetic medication use at follow-up. Linear regression was used to examine cross-sectional associations of aldosterone with fasting plasma glucose, HOMA 2- IR and HOMA 2-β; Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios ( HR ) for incident diabetes mellitus with multivariable adjustment. There were 116 cases of incident diabetes mellitus over 10.5 years among 1570 adults (44% non-Hispanic white, 13% Chinese American, 19% Black, 24% Hispanic American, mean age 64±10 years, 51% female). A 100% increase in log-aldosterone was associated with a 2.6 mg/dL higher fasting plasma glucose, 15% higher HOMA 2- IR and 6% higher HOMA 2-β ( P<0.01). A 1- SD increase in log-aldosterone was associated with a 44% higher risk of incident diabetes mellitus ( P<0.01) with the greatest increase of 142% ( P<0.01) observed in Chinese Americans ( P for interaction=0.09 versus other ethnicities). Similar cross-sectional findings for log-plasma renin activity existed, but log-plasma renin activity was not associated with incident diabetes mellitus after full adjustment. Conclusions Aldosterone is associated with glucose homeostasis and diabetes mellitus risk with graded associations among Chinese Americans and blacks, suggesting that pleiotropic effects of aldosterone may represent a modifiable mechanism in diabetes mellitus pathogenesis with potential racial/ethnic variation
Public Awareness of Medical Imaging as a Source of Ionizing Radiation Exposure
Background. Biological effects of exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) are well known. Literature suggests most patients and physicians lack proficient understanding of risks associated with ionizing radiation. Our study goals were to: assess the extent to which productive, informed conversations regarding ionizing radiation are occurring between patients and providers; characterize public awareness of medical imaging procedures as sources of IR exposure; and investigate best practices in patientprovider communications.
Methods. We developed and administered a 17-question survey to 303 adults at five locations across Chittenden County, Vermont, over a 6-week period in fall 2016. Descriptive and statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS.

A Helium-Surface Interaction Potential of BiTe(111) from Ultrahigh-Resolution Spin-Echo Measurements
We have determined an atom-surface interaction potential for the
HeBiTe(111) system by analysing ultrahigh resolution measurements of
selective adsorption resonances. The experimental measurements were obtained
using He spin-echo spectrometry. Following an initial free-particle model
analysis, we use elastic close-coupling calculations to obtain a
three-dimensional potential. The three-dimensional potential is then further
refined based on the experimental data set, giving rise to an optimised
potential which fully reproduces the experimental data. Based on this analysis,
the HeBiTe(111) interaction potential can be described by a
corrugated Morse potential with a well depth , a
stiffness and a surface electronic
corrugation of % of the lattice constant. The improved
uncertainties of the atom-surface interaction potential should also enable the
use in inelastic close-coupled calculations in order to eventually study the
temperature dependence and the line width of selective adsorption resonances
A search for 21 cm HI absorption in AT20G compact radio galaxies
We present results from a search for 21 cm associated HI absorption in a
sample of 29 radio sources selected from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz survey.
Observations were conducted using the Australia Telescope Compact Array
Broadband Backend, with which we can simultaneously look for 21 cm absorption
in a redshift range of 0.04 < z < 0.08, with a velocity resolution of 7 km/s .
In preparation for future large-scale H I absorption surveys we test a
spectral-line finding method based on Bayesian inference. We use this to assign
significance to our detections and to determine the best-fitting number of
spectral-line components. We find that the automated spectral-line search is
limited by residuals in the continuum, both from the band-pass calibration and
spectral-ripple subtraction, at spectral-line widths of \Deltav_FWHM > 103 km/s
. Using this technique we detect two new absorbers and a third, previously
known, yielding a 10 per cent detection rate. Of the detections, the
spectral-line profiles are consistent with the theory that we are seeing
different orientations of the absorbing gas, in both the host galaxy and
circumnuclear disc, with respect to our line-of-sight to the source. In order
to spatially resolve the spectral-line components in the two new detections,
and so verify this conclusion, we require further high-resolution 21 cm
observations (~0.01 arcsec) using very long baseline interferometry.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures and 5 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS
