The discontinuous Galerkin method for fractional degenerate convection-diffusion equations
We propose and study discontinuous Galerkin methods for strongly degenerate
convection-diffusion equations perturbed by a fractional diffusion (L\'evy)
operator. We prove various stability estimates along with convergence results
toward properly defined (entropy) solutions of linear and nonlinear equations.
Finally, the qualitative behavior of solutions of such equations are
illustrated through numerical experiments
Aspects of Puff Field Theory
We describe some features of the recently constructed "Puff Field Theory,"
and present arguments in favor of it being a field theory decoupled from
gravity. We construct its supergravity dual and calculate the entropy of this
theory in the limit of large 't Hooft coupling. We also determine the leading
irrelevant operator that governs its deviation from N=4 super Yang-Mills

Chronic psychosocial and financial burden accelerates 5-year telomere shortening: findings from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults Study.
Leukocyte telomere length, a marker of immune system function, is sensitive to exposures such as psychosocial stressors and health-maintaining behaviors. Past research has determined that stress experienced in adulthood is associated with shorter telomere length, but is limited to mostly cross-sectional reports. We test whether repeated reports of chronic psychosocial and financial burden is associated with telomere length change over a 5-year period (years 15 and 20) from 969 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, a longitudinal, population-based cohort, ages 18-30 at time of recruitment in 1985. We further examine whether multisystem resiliency, comprised of social connections, health-maintaining behaviors, and psychological resources, mitigates the effects of repeated burden on telomere attrition over 5 years. Our results indicate that adults with high chronic burden do not show decreased telomere length over the 5-year period. However, these effects do vary by level of resiliency, as regression results revealed a significant interaction between chronic burden and multisystem resiliency. For individuals with high repeated chronic burden and low multisystem resiliency (1 SD below the mean), there was a significant 5-year shortening in telomere length, whereas no significant relationships between chronic burden and attrition were evident for those at moderate and higher levels of resiliency. These effects apply similarly across the three components of resiliency. Results imply that interventions should focus on establishing strong social connections, psychological resources, and health-maintaining behaviors when attempting to ameliorate stress-related decline in telomere length among at-risk individuals
The Emerging Role of PARP Inhibitors in the Treatment of Prostate Cancer
Poly (ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) is a critical DNA repair enzyme involved in DNA single-strand break repair through the base excision repair pathway. PARP inhibitors have been shown to sensitize tumors to DNA-damaging agents and selectively kill homologous recombination repair-defective cancers, such as those arising in BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers. In addition to its well-documented role in DNA damage repair (DDR), emerging evidence has indicated that PARP1 plays an important role in mediating the transcriptional activities of androgen receptor (AR) and ETS gene rearrangement in prostate cancer. Preclinical and clinical research suggested that the activity of PARP inhibitors is not limited to those with BRCA mutations. PARP inhibitors may have activity in cancers deficient in other DNA repair genes or signaling pathways that mitigate DNA repair

Glioma Through the Looking GLASS: Molecular Evolution of Diffuse Gliomas and the Glioma Longitudinal AnalySiS Consortium
Adult diffuse gliomas are a diverse group of brain neoplasms that inflict a high emotional toll on patients and their families. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and similar projects have provided a comprehensive understanding of the somatic alterations and molecular subtypes of glioma at diagnosis. However, gliomas undergo significant cellular and molecular evolution during disease progression. We review the current knowledge on the genomic and epigenetic abnormalities in primary tumors and after disease recurrence, highlight the gaps in the literature, and elaborate on the need for a new multi-institutional effort to bridge these knowledge gaps and how the Glioma Longitudinal AnalySiS Consortium (GLASS) aims to systemically catalog the longitudinal changes in gliomas. The GLASS initiative will provide essential insights into the evolution of glioma toward a lethal phenotype, with the potential to reveal targetable vulnerabilities, and ultimately, improved outcomes for a patient population in need

distinguish many – but not all – marine zooplankton species generate similarly exceptional patterns of
population genetic and genomic diversity and structure. The phylogenetic diversity of zooplankton has
slowed the application of population genomic approaches, due to lack of genomic resources for closelyrelated
species and diversity of genomic architecture, including highly-replicated genomes of many
crustaceans. Use of numerous genomic markers, especially single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), is
transforming our ability to analyze population genetics and connectivity of marine zooplankton, and
providing new understanding and different answers than earlier analyses, which typically used
mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers. Population genomic approaches have confirmed that,
despite high dispersal potential, many zooplankton species exhibit genetic structuring among geographic
populations, especially at large ocean-basin scales, and have revealed patterns and pathways of population
connectivity that do not always track ocean circulation. Genomic and transcriptomic resources are
critically needed to allow further examination of micro-evolution and local adaptation, including
identification of genes that show evidence of selection. These new tools will also enable further
examination of the significance of small-scale genetic heterogeneity of marine zooplankton, to
discriminate genetic “noise” in large and patchy populations from local adaptation to environmental

Effect of Socioeconomic Status (SES) Disparity on Neural Development in Female African-American Infants at 1 Month
There is increasing interest in both the cumulative and long term impact of early life adversity on brain structure and function, especially as the brain is both highly vulnerable and highly adaptive during childhood. Relationships between SES and neural development have been shown in children older than age two years. Less is known regarding the impact of SES on neural development in children before age two. This paper examines the effect of SES, indexed by income-to-needs (ITN) and maternal education, on cortical, deep gray, and white matter volumes in term, healthy, appropriate for gestational age, African American, female infants. At 44-46 post-conception weeks, unsedated infants underwent MRI (3.0T Siemens Verio scanner, 32-channel head coil). Images were segmented based on a locally-constructed template. Utilizing hierarchical linear regression, overall and component (maternal education and ITN) SES effects on MRI volumes were examined. In this cohort of healthy African American infants of varying SES, lower SES was associated with smaller cortical gray and deep gray matter volumes. These SES effects on neural outcome at such a young age build on similar studies of older children, suggesting that the biological embedding of adversity may occur very early in development
Genomic variation in 3,010 diverse accessions of Asian cultivated rice
Here we analyse genetic variation, population structure and diversity among 3,010 diverse Asian cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) genomes from the 3,000 Rice Genomes Project. Our results are consistent with the five major groups previously recognized, but also suggest several unreported subpopulations that correlate with geographic location. We identified 29 million single nucleotide polymorphisms, 2.4 million small indels and over 90,000 structural variations that contribute to within- and between-population variation. Using pan-genome analyses, we identified more than 10,000 novel full-length protein-coding genes and a high number of presence–absence variations. The complex patterns of introgression observed in domestication genes are consistent with multiple independent rice domestication events.
