Local stabilisation of polar order at charged antiphase boundaries in antiferroelectric (Bi<sub>0.85</sub>Nd<sub>0.15</sub>)(Ti<sub>0.1</sub>Fe<sub>0.9</sub>)O<sub>3</sub>
Observation of an unusual, negatively-charged antiphase boundary in (Bi<sub>0.85</sub>Nd<sub>0.15</sub>)(Ti<sub>0.1</sub>Fe<sub>0.9</sub>)O<sub>3</sub> is reported. Aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to establish the full three dimensional structure of this boundary including O-ion positions to ~ ± 10 pm. The charged antiphase boundary stabilises tetragonally distorted regions with a strong polar ordering to either side of the boundary, with a characteristic length scale determined by the excess charge trapped at the boundary. Far away from the boundary the crystal relaxes into the well-known Nd-stabilised antiferroelectric phase
Novel nanorod precipitate formation in neodymium and titanium codoped bismuth ferrite
The discovery of unusual nanorod precipitates in bismuth ferrite doped with Nd and Ti is reported. The atomic structure and chemistry of the nanorods are determined using a combination of high angle annular dark field imaging, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional calculations. It is found that the structure of the BiFeO3 matrix is strongly modified adjacent to the precipitates; the readiness of BiFeO3 to adopt different structural allotropes in turn explains why such a large axial ratio, uncommon in precipitates, is stabilized. In addition, a correlation is found between the alignment of the rods and the orientation of ferroelastic domains in the matrix, which is consistent with the system's attempt to minimize its internal strain. Density functional calculations indicate a finite density of electronic states at the Fermi energy within the rods, suggesting enhanced electrical conductivity along the rod axes, and motivating future investigations of nanorod functionalities
Drug-related mutational patterns in hepatitis B virus (HBV) reverse transcriptase proteins from Iranian treatment-Naïve chronic HBV patients
Background: Immunomodulators and Nucleotide analogues have been used globally for the dealing of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. However, the development of drug resistance is a major limitation to their long-term effectiveness. Objectives: The aim of this study was to characterize the hepatitis B virus reverse transcriptase (RT) protein variations among Iranian chronic HBV carriers who did not receive any antiviral treatments. Materials and Methods: Hepatitis B virus partial RT genes from 325 chronic in active carrier patients were amplified and directly sequenced. Nucleotide/amino acid substitutions were identified compared to the sequences obtained from the database. Results: All strains belonging to genotype D.365 amino-acid substitutions were found. Mutations related to lamivudine, adefovir, telbivudine, and entecavir occurred in (YMDD) 4% (n = 13), (SVQ) 17.23% (n = 56), (M204I/V + L180M) 2.45% (n = 8) and (M204I) 2.76% (n = 9) of patients, respectively. Conclusions: RT mutants do occur naturally and could be found in HBV carriers who have never received antiviral therapy. However, mutations related to drug resistance in Iranian treatment-naïve chronic HBV patients were found to be higher than other studies published formerly. Chronic HBV patients should be monitored closely prior the commencement of therapy to achieve the best regimen option. © 2013, KOWSAR Corp
Information system for image classification based on frequency curve proximity
With the size digital collections are currently reaching, retrieving the best match of a
document from large collections by comparing hundreds of tags is a task that involves
considerable algorithm complexity, even more so if the number of tags in the collection is
not fixed. For these cases, similarity search appears to be the best retrieval method, but
there is a lack of techniques suited for these conditions. This work presents a combination
of machine learning algorithms put together to find the most similar object of a given one
in a set of pre-processed objects based only on their metadata tags. The algorithm
represents objects as character frequency curves and is capable of finding relationships
between objects without an apparent association. It can also be parallelized using
MapReduce strategies to perform the search. This method can be applied to a wide variety
of documents with metadata tags. The case-study used in this work to demonstrate the
similarity search technique is that of a collection of image objects in JavaScript Object
Notation (JSON) containing metadata tags.This work has been done in the context of the project

A Survey of Air-to-Ground Propagation Channel Modeling for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs), particularly for small UAVs, due to their affordable
prices, ease of availability, and ease of operability. Existing and future
applications of UAVs include remote surveillance and monitoring, relief
operations, package delivery, and communication backhaul infrastructure.
Additionally, UAVs are envisioned as an important component of 5G wireless
technology and beyond. The unique application scenarios for UAVs necessitate
accurate air-to-ground (AG) propagation channel models for designing and
evaluating UAV communication links for control/non-payload as well as payload
data transmissions. These AG propagation models have not been investigated in
detail when compared to terrestrial propagation models. In this paper, a
comprehensive survey is provided on available AG channel measurement campaigns,
large and small scale fading channel models, their limitations, and future
research directions for UAV communication scenarios
Polynomials over quaternions and coquaternions: a unified approach
This paper aims to present, in a unified manner, results which are valid on both the algebras of quaternions and coquaternions and, simultaneously, call the attention to the main differences between these two algebras. The rings of one-sided polynomials over each of these algebras are studied and some important differences in what concerns the structure of the set of their zeros are remarked. Laboratory simulation of irrigation-induced settlement of collapsible desert soils under constant surcharge
The heterogeneous nature of soil as a load bearing material, coupled with varying environmental conditions, pose challenges to geotechnical engineers in their quest to characterize and understand ground behavior for safe design of structures. Standard procedures for checking bearing capacity and settlement alone may sometimes be insufficient to achieve an acceptable degree of durability and in-service performance of a structure, particularly under varying environmental conditions, whether natural or man-made. There exists a wide variety of problematic soils that exhibit swelling, shrinkage, dispersion and collapse characteristics occasioned by changes in moisture content. Specific examples are collapsible soils, which occur mainly in arid and semi-arid regions, are generally capable of resisting fairly large loads in the dry condition but suffer instability and significant strength loss when in contact with water. A number of case studies in the United Arab Emirates were examined, where lightly loaded structures such as boundary walls, pavements and footpaths had been built on ground overlying collapsible soil strata. Sustained irrigation of the dry landscapes was found to have caused uneven settlement of the collapsible soils leading to continuous distress to the structures as evident from cracking and deformation. To help address the problem, an opportunity has been taken to develop a laboratory method of simulating the loaded behavior of collapsible soils in varying situations and to measure its deformation at constant surcharge and ground water infiltration rates. Finally, relationships were developed to estimate the time and magnitude of settlement, if thickness of collapsible soil is known
