Rebirth of self and identity: an analysis of Meena Alexander’s Manhattan music

This paper illustrates how Meena Alexander explores the prospect of outgrowing the sense of rootlessness of Asian immigrants in America in Manhattan Music. According to her it is managed by vocational and social engagements, and bonding with fellow expatriates. Alienation, search for identity and emotional insecurity of immigrants have hitherto been the dominant themes of diasporic literature. However, in the context of globalisation the concept of ‘home’ as a giver of emotional security cries for a redefinition. Meena Alexander’s Manhattan Music analyses the impact of transplantation from natal to post-marital space in the lives of women characters. Sandhya Rosenblum, Draupadi Dinkins, Sakhi and a few others despite the differences in their upbringing, experience the trauma of dislocation at first, but outgrow the same. Sandhya wrestles between her conflicting roles, a mother in New York and a daughter revisiting India, and in neither does she feel at home. But after her recovery from the shock of suicide, she escapes from racial thinking. It constitutes a rebirth of self for her. Similarly, Draupadi, the alter-ego of Sandhya, comes to realise being an American is only a part of her Self. Meena Alexander’s central vision in all her writings is the need of the immigrants for adapting themselves to the changed environment to find meaning in their lives. In Manhattan Music, the writer emphasises this idea by portraying Sandhya’s inner conflict in her adopted country at first and later her awakening to the truth that we all have several “homes” or as Homi Bhabha suggests we have to “desire for social solidarity: I am looking for the join…I want to join…I want to join.” (Bhabha 1994, p.18

An isobar contour plot progrz

A computer program was developed to obtain ; isobar contours from the total pressure measurements at the engine face of an 1/3 scale model of an aircraft intake duct provided by ADA . A cubic spline method was used to interpolate the total pressure value between the measuring stations . The isobar contour plots were obtained for engine face Mach numbers\ud varying from 0.17 to 0 .43

Introducing Tax Education in Non-Accounting Curriculum in Higher Education: Survey Evidence

This study aims i) to assess the quest for tax education among working adults that pursuing off-campus non-accounting program, ii) to analyze the level of tax knowledge among the working adults, iii) to elicit the relevant tax topics to be taught should tax education be integrated into non-accounting curriculum in higher education. We surveyed 450 working adults pursuing off-campus non-accounting program in one Malaysian public university. 190 usable responses were received. The survey found 64% of the respondents were keen to learn taxation, and only 23.7% of the respondents possessed high level of tax knowledge. The topics that they desired to learn the most are basic tax principles, personal taxation, tax planning for individuals and taxation for small business and company. The findings suggest that as we moved into the era of self-assessment tax system, it is imperative for the accounting academics and the education authorities to seriously consider introducing tax education in non-accounting curriculum in higher education

There are many pathological conditions that cause mobility deficits and that ultimately influence someone’s autonomy.Aims: to evaluate patients with mobility deficits functional status; to implement a Rehabilitation Nursing intervention plan; to monitor health gains through mobility deficits rehabilitation.Conclusion: Early intervention and the implementation of a nursing rehabilitation intervention plan results in health gains (direct or indirect), decreases the risk of developing Pressure Ulcers (PU) and the risk of developing a situation of immobility that affects patients’ autonomy and quality of life

Review: ‘Gimme five’: future challenges in multiple sclerosis. ECTRIMS Lecture 2009

This article is based on the ECTRIMS lecture given at the 25th ECTRIMS meeting which was held in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 9 to 12 September 2009. Five challenges have been identified: (1) safeguarding the principles of medical ethics; (2) optimizing the risk/benefit ratio; (3) bridging the gap between multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalitis; (4) promoting neuroprotection and repair; and (5) tailoring multiple sclerosis therapy to the individual patient. Each of these challenges will be discussed and placed in the context of current research into the pathogenesis and treatment of multiple sclerosis

Rooting response of elite cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum Bercht & Presl.) lines

Rooting of terminal cuttings of cinn amon (Cinnamomum verum) with indole butyric acid 2000 ppm was standardi zed. Nine elite lines of cinn amon, superior in their yield and quantity were studied for variability in their rooting capacity. Cinnamon line SL-5 was the best with high rooting percentage and good development of primary and secondary roots. &nbsp

Three promising morphological variants in clove (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry) from Tamil Nadu, India

Clove (Syzygium aromatieum (L.) Merr. & Perry) (Myrtaceae) plantations are limited to parts of Kerala and Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Nilgiris districts of Tamil Nadu in India. The plantations have originated from a few seedlings introduced from Mauritius. The oldest clove plantation in India is in Ashamboo hills (Kanyakumari district), the southern most hills of the country. Surveys were undertaken in these hills from 1992 onwards for identification of elite clove trees and variant types. Three distinctly different morphological variants located during the surveys are reported here. &nbsp

Air layering in cassia (Cinnamomum aromaticum Nees.)

Air layering in 2 year old cassia plants (Cinnamomum aromaticum) is reported for the first time. A success of 87.5 and 50.0% rooting was obtained when carried out during July and November, respectively, with 100% field establishment. &nbsp
