    Sacred communities: contestations and connections

    Get PDF
This article discusses a project whose purpose was to review existing qualitative and quantitative data from two separate studies to provide new insights about everyday religion and belonging. Researchers engaged in knowledge exchange and dialogue with new and former research participants, with other researchers involved in similar research, and with wider academic networks beyond the core disciplines represented here, principally anthropology and geography. Key concluding themes related to the ambivalent nature of ‘faith’, connections over place and time, and the contested nature of community. Implicit in terms like ‘faith’, ‘community’, and ‘life course’ are larger interwoven narratives of space, time, place, corporeality, and emotion. The authors found that understanding how places, communities, and faiths differ and intersect requires an understanding of social relatedness and boundaries

Evolutionary instability of Zero Determinant strategies demonstrates that winning isn't everything

Zero Determinant (ZD) strategies are a new class of probabilistic and conditional strategies that are able to unilaterally set the expected payoff of an opponent in iterated plays of the Prisoner's Dilemma irrespective of the opponent's strategy, or else to set the ratio between a ZD player's and their opponent's expected payoff. Here we show that while ZD strategies are weakly dominant, they are not evolutionarily stable and will instead evolve into less coercive strategies. We show that ZD strategies with an informational advantage over other players that allows them to recognize other ZD strategies can be evolutionarily stable (and able to exploit other players). However, such an advantage is bound to be short-lived as opposing strategies evolve to counteract the recognition.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. Construction Mortgage Financing in Ohio

    Get PDF
This article consists of a review and analysis of the Yarborough decision and the open-end mortgage statute and an assessment of their probable impact upon current construction loan lending procedures. In addition, the authors offer various observations regarding the form in which disbursing agreements and construction mortgage deeds should be drafted. The structure of the article may be briefly described as follows: First, attention will be given to the three methods by which a mortgagee can preserve the priority of its mortgage lien over liens of mechanics men which attach to the mortgaged premises after the recording of the mortgage but before any disbursements are made thereunder. Special consideration will be given to the manner in which the Yarborough decision affects each method. Second, the writers will discuss the manner in which openend mortgages relate to: (1) non-statutory construction mortgages and (2) mechanics\u27 and other types of liens which attach to the mortgaged premises after the recording of an open-end mortgage but before any optional disbursements are made thereunder. In this connection, the use of open-end mortgages to secure construction loans will be considered. Third, the advisability of drafting an open-end mortgage which incorporates the provisions of § 1311.14 of the Mechanic\u27s Lien Statute will be examined. Fourth, the authors will discuss a proposed method by which a mortgagee can reasonably assure that its mortgage lien will take priority over any vendees\u27 liens which exist on the date of the recording of the mortgag
