Phase Transformations in Binary Colloidal Monolayers
Phase transformations can be difficult to characterize at the microscopic
level due to the inability to directly observe individual atomic motions. Model
colloidal systems, by contrast, permit the direct observation of individual
particle dynamics and of collective rearrangements, which allows for real-space
characterization of phase transitions. Here, we study a quasi-two-dimensional,
binary colloidal alloy that exhibits liquid-solid and solid-solid phase
transitions, focusing on the kinetics of a diffusionless transformation between
two crystal phases. Experiments are conducted on a monolayer of magnetic and
nonmagnetic spheres suspended in a thin layer of ferrofluid and exposed to a
tunable magnetic field. A theoretical model of hard spheres with point dipoles
at their centers is used to guide the choice of experimental parameters and
characterize the underlying materials physics. When the applied field is normal
to the fluid layer, a checkerboard crystal forms; when the angle between the
field and the normal is sufficiently large, a striped crystal assembles. As the
field is slowly tilted away from the normal, we find that the transformation
pathway between the two phases depends strongly on crystal orientation, field
strength, and degree of confinement of the monolayer. In some cases, the
pathway occurs by smooth magnetostrictive shear, while in others it involves

Large-Scale Integration of Nanoelectromechanical Systems for Gas Sensing Applications
We have developed arrays of nanomechanical systems (NEMS) by large-scale integration, comprising thousands of individual nanoresonators with densities of up to 6 million NEMS per square centimeter. The individual NEMS devices are electrically coupled using a combined series-parallel configuration that is extremely robust with respect to lithographical defects and mechanical or electrostatic-discharge damage. Given the large number of connected nanoresonators, the arrays are able to handle extremely high input powers (>1 W per array, corresponding to <1 mW per nanoresonator) without excessive heating or deterioration of resonance response. We demonstrate the utility of integrated NEMS arrays as high-performance chemical vapor sensors, detecting a part-per-billion concentration of a chemical warfare simulant within only a 2 s exposure period
Piezoelectric nanoelectromechanical resonators based on aluminum nitride thin films
We demonstrate piezoelectrically actuated, electrically tunable nanomechanical resonators based on multilayers containing a 100-nm-thin aluminum nitride (AlN) layer. Efficient piezoelectric actuation of very high frequency fundamental flexural modes up to ~80 MHz is demonstrated at room temperature. Thermomechanical fluctuations of AlN cantilevers measured by optical interferometry enable calibration of the transduction responsivity and displacement sensitivities of the resonators. Measurements and analyses show that the 100 nm AlN layer employed has an excellent piezoelectric coefficient, d_(31)=2.4 pm/V. Doubly clamped AlN beams exhibit significant frequency tuning behavior with applied dc voltage
Cotton in Zambia. Agronomical practices and pest control
Cotton production in Zambia over the past ten years has continuously increased. But this situation is only due to the increase of the hectareage under cotton. And, in fact, the average seed-cotton yield has stagnated around 600 kg/ha - a very low level - varying according to the rainfall patterns only. To achieve better yields, it is necessary that management be considerably improved. This is the only solution which will result in a further increase of the national production together with better profits for farmers. So, we the authors, members of the cotton team and LINTCO thought that a booklet gathering some basic recommendations on agronomical practices and pest control could be a useful tool for the extension staff, the cotton growers and that it will help boost cotton production

The Lombard intelligibility benefit of native and non-native speech for native and non-native listeners
Speech produced in noise (Lombard speech) is more intelligible than speech produced in quiet (plain speech). Previous research on the Lombard intelligibility benefit focused almost entirely on how native speakers produce and perceive Lombard speech. In this study, we investigate the size of the Lombard intelligibility benefit of both native (American-English) and non-native (native Dutch) English for native and non-native listeners (Dutch and Spanish). We used a glimpsing metric to measure the energetic masking potential of speech, which predicted that both native and non-native Lombard speech could withstand greater amounts of masking to a similar extent, compared to plain speech. In an intelligibility experiment, native English, Spanish, and Dutch listeners listened to the same words, mixed with noise. While the non-native listeners appeared to benefit more from Lombard speech than the native listeners did, each listener group experienced a similar benefit for native and non-native Lombard speech. Energetic masking, as captured by the glimpsing metric, only accounted for part of the Lombard benefit, indicating that the Lombard intelligibility benefit does not only result from a shift in spectral distribution. Maternal educational level and risk of gestational hypertension: the Generation R Study.
We examined whether maternal educational level as an indicator of socioeconomic status is associated with gestational hypertension. We also examined the extent to which the effect of education is mediated by maternal substance use (that is smoking, alcohol consumption and illegal drug use), pre-existing diabetes, anthropometrics (that is height and body mass index (BMI)) and blood pressure at enrolment. This was studied in 3262 Dutch pregnant women participating in the Generation R Study, a population-based cohort study. Level of maternal education was established by questionnaire at enrolment, and categorized into high, mid-high, mid-low and low. Diagnosis of gestational hypertension was retrieved from medical records using standard criteria. Odds ratios (OR) of gestational hypertension for educational levels were calculated, adjusted for potential confounders and additionally adjusted for potential mediators. Adjusted for age and gravidity, women with mid-low (OR: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.02, 2.27) and low education (OR: 1.30; 95% CI: 0.80, 2.12) had a higher risk of gestational hypertension than women with high education. Additional adjustment for substance use, pre-existing diabetes, anthropometrics and blood pressure at enrolment attenuated these ORs to 1.09 (95% CI: 0.70, 1.69) and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.50, 1.58), respectively. These attenuations were largely due to the effects of BMI and blood pressure at enrolment. Women with relatively low educational levels have a higher risk of gestational hypertension, which is largely due to higher BMI and blood pressure levels from early pregnancy. The higher risk of gestational hypertension in these women is probably caused by pre-existing hypertensive tendencies that manifested themselves during pregnancy
Hospitalizations for eating disorders and other mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders before and during COVID-19 in Canada
Purpose: We assessed hospital admission rates for anorexia nervosa (AN)/atypical AN (AAN) relative to other mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders across age groups before and 1-year postpandemic onset. Methods: Using the Canadian Discharge Abstracts Database, we analyzed admissions for AN/AAN and mental, behavioral, and neurodevelopmental disorders in ages 10–84-year-olds, grouped into 10–24, 25–44, and 45+ year olds. Data spanned fiscal years (FY) 2006–2021. Results: AN/AAN admissions increased in the 10–24-year-old group, while remaining stable in older age groups. In FY2019, AN/AAN constituted 2.6% (95% confidence interval 2.4–2.8) of psychiatric admissions, increasing to 4.1% (95% confidence interval 3.9–4.3) in FY2020. Odds ratio for FY2019-FY2020 hospitalizations in 10–24 group was 1.61 (p < .0001), 25–44 was 1.15 (p = .31), and 45+ was 0.61 (p = .03). Discussion: AN/AAN admissions surged among 10–24 year-olds during the pandemic's onset, underscoring the need for early interventions and preparedness to support adolescents and young adults with AN/AAN.</p
Alphaherpesvirus infection in a free-ranging narwhal Monodon monoceros from Arctic Canada
We report the detection of an alphaherpesvirus infecting an adult female narwhal Monodon monoceros captured live during a tagging project in Tremblay Sound, Nunavut, Canada, in August 2018. The individual had 2 open wounds on the dorsum but appeared in good overall health. A blowhole swab was collected, and subsequent virus isolation was performed using a beluga whale primary cell line. Non-syncytial cytopathic effects were seen, in contrast to syncytial cytopathic effects described for monodontid alphaherpesvirus 1 (MoAHV1) isolates previously recovered from beluga whales Delphinapterus leucas from Alaska, USA, and the Northwest Territories, Canada. Next-generation sequencing was performed on a sequencing library generated from the DNA of the viral isolate and the analysis of the assembled contigs permitted the recovery of 6 genes, conserved in all members of the family Orthoherpesviridae, for downstream genetic and phylogenetic analyses. BLASTN (basic local alignment search tool, searching nucleotide databases using a nucleotide query) analyses of the narwhal herpesvirus conserved genes showed the highest nucleotide identities to MoAHV1, ranging between 88.5 and 96.8%. A maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on concatenation of the 6 conserved herpesviruses amino acid alignments revealed the narwhal herpesvirus (NHV) to be the closest relative to MoAHV1, forming a clade within the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, genus Varicellovirus. NHV is the first alphaherpesvirus characterized from a narwhal and represents a new viral species, which we propose to be known as Varicellovirus monodontidalpha2. Further research is needed to determine the prevalence and potential clinical impacts of this alphaherpesvirus infection in narwhals
