Relative pleopod length as an indicator of size at sexual maturity in slipper (Scyllarides squammosus) and spiny Hawaiian (Panulirus marginatus) lobsters
Body size at gonadal maturity is described for females of the slipper lobster (Scyllarides squammosus) (Scyllaridae) and the endemic Hawaiian spiny lobster (Panulirus marginatus) (Palinuridae) based on microscopic examination
of histological preparations of ovaries. These data are used to validate several morphological metrics (relative
exopodite length, ovigerous condition) of functional sexual maturity. Relative exopodite length (“pleopod length”) produced consistent estimates of size at maturity when evaluated with a newly derived statistical application for estimating size at the morphometric maturation point (MMP) for the population, identified as the midpoint of a sigmoid
function spanning the estimated boundaries of overlap between the largest immature and smallest adult animals.
Estimates of the MMP were related to matched (same-year) characterizations of sexual maturity based on ovigerous
condition — a more conventional measure of functional maturity previously used to characterize maturity for the two lobster species. Both measures of functional maturity were similar for the respective species and were within 5% and 2% of one another for slipper and spiny lobster,
respectively. The precision observed for two shipboard collection series of pleopod-length data indicated that the
method is reliable and not dependent on specialized expertise. Precision of maturity estimates for S. squammosus with the pleopod-length metric was similar
to that for P. marginatus with any of the other measures (including conventional evidence of ovigerous condition)
and greatly exceeded the precision of estimates for S. squammosus based on ovigerous condition alone. The two
measures of functional maturity averaged within 8% of the estimated size at gonadal maturity for the respective species. Appendage-to-body size proportions, such as the pleopod length metric, hold great promise, particularly for species of slipper lobsters like S. squammosus for which there exist no other reliable conventional morphological measures of sexual maturity. also should be included among the factors evaluated when assessing size at sexual maturity in spiny lobster stocks;
previously, these proportions have been obtained routinely only for brachyuran crabs within the Crustacea
Cosmic ray energy changes at the termination shock and in the heliosheath
Voyager 1 crossed the termination shock of the solar wind in December 2004 at 94 AU and currently measures the cosmic ray intensity in the heliosheath. To better understand this modulation region beyond the shock, where adiabatic energy changes should be small, we review the net effect of energy changes during the modulation process, including adiabatic deceleration in the solar wind, acceleration at the termination shock, and the possibility that stochastic acceleration in the heliosheath may also make a contribution
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea home range and habitat use during the non-breeding season in Assam, India
India is an important non-breeding ground for migratory waterfowl in the Central Asian Flyway. Millions of birds visit wedands across the country, yet information on their distribution, abundance, and use of resources is rudimentary at best. Limited information suggests that populations of several species of migratory ducks are declining due to encroachment of wedand habitats largely by agriculture and industry. The development of conservation strategies is stymied by a lack of ecological information on these species. We conducted a preliminary assessment of the home range and habitat use of Ruddy Shelduck Tadornaferruginea in the northeast Indian state of Assam. Seven Ruddy Shelducks were fitted with solar-powered Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite transmitters, and were tracked on a daily basis during the winter of 2009-2010. Locations from all seven were used to describe habitat use, while locations from four were used to quantify their home range, as the other three had too few locations (<30) for home range estimation. A Brownian Bridge Movement Model (BBMM), used to estimate home ranges, found that the Ruddy Shelduck had an average core use area (i.e. the contour defining 50% of positions) of 40 km 2 (range = 22-87 km2) and an average home range (95% contour) of 610 km2 (range = 222-1,550 km2). Resource Selection Functions (RSF), used to describe habitat use, showed that the birds frequented riverine wetlands more than expected, occurred on grasslands and shrublands in proportion to their availability, and avoided woods and cropland habitats. The core use areas for three individuals (75%) were on the Brahmaputra River, indicating their preference for riverine habitats. Management and protection of riverine habitats and nearby grasslands may benefit conservation efforts for the Ruddy Shelduck and waterfowl species that share these habitats during the non-breeding seaso
Steroid Therapy for Bacterial Meningitis
Routine dexamethasone therapy for bacterial meningitis in pediatric patients is controversial. Two experts debated this topic at the 1993 meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Both experts agreed that for management of Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, dexamethasone significantly reduced sensorineural hearing loss and probably reduced other long-term sequelae. Because relatively few patients with pneumococcal and meningococcal meningitis have been studied, no conclusions could be reached regarding the effectiveness of dexamethasone. Dr. Urs Schaad emphasized the impressive anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone in experimental pneumococcal meningitis and the lack of any adverse events when given to children for 2 or 4 days. He recommended routine use of dexamethasone in treating pediatric patients with bacterial meningitis. Dr. Sheldon Kaplan expressed concern regarding the effectiveness of steroids in treating pneumococcal meningitis, especially when penicillin-resistant and cephalosporin-resistant isolates are present, and he addressed the question of the long-term effects of administration of dexamethasone in children with viral meningitis. Likelihood Analysis of Cosmic Shear on Simulated and VIRMOS-DESCART Data
We present a maximum likelihood analysis of cosmological parameters from
measurements of the aperture mass up to 35 arcmin, using simulated and real
cosmic shear data. A four-dimensional parameter space is explored which
examines the mean density \Omega_M, the mass power spectrum normalization
\sigma_8, the shape parameter \Gamma and the redshift of the sources z_s.
Constraints on \Omega_M and \sigma_8 (resp. \Gamma and z_s) are then given by
marginalizing over \Gamma and z_s (resp. \Omega_M and \sigma_8). For a flat
LCDM cosmologies, using a photometric redshift prior for the sources and \Gamma
\in [0.1,0.4], we find \sigma_8=(0.57\pm0.04) \Omega_M^{(0.24\mp 0.18)
\Omega_M-0.49} at the 68% confidence level (the error budget includes
statistical noise, full cosmic variance and residual systematic). The estimate
of \Gamma, marginalized over \Omega_M \in [0.1,0.4], \sigma_8 \in [0.7,1.3] and
z_s constrained by photometric redshifts, gives \Gamma=0.25\pm 0.13 at 68%
confidence. Adopting h=0.7, a flat universe, \Gamma=0.2 and \Omega_m=0.3 we
find \sigma_8=0.98 \pm0.06 . Combined with CMB, our results suggest a non-zero
cosmological constant and provide tight constraints on \Omega_M and \sigma_8.
We finaly compare our results to the cluster abundance ones, and discuss the
possible discrepancy with the latest determinations of the cluster method. In
particular we point out the actual limitations of the mass power spectrum

Spitzer bright, UltraVISTA faint sources in COSMOS: the contribution to the overall population of massive galaxies at z=3-7
We have analysed a sample of 574 Spitzer 4.5 micron-selected galaxies with
[4.5]24 (AB) over the UltraVISTA ultra-deep COSMOS field. Our
aim is to investigate whether these mid-IR bright, near-IR faint sources
contribute significantly to the overall population of massive galaxies at
redshifts z>=3. By performing a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis
using up to 30 photometric bands, we have determined that the redshift
distribution of our sample peaks at redshifts z~2.5-3.0, and ~32% of the
galaxies lie at z>=3. We have studied the contribution of these sources to the
galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) at high redshifts. We found that the
[4.5]24 galaxies produce a negligible change to the GSMF
previously determined for Ks_auto<24 sources at 3=<z<4, but their contribution
is more important at 4=~50% of the galaxies with stellar
masses Mst>~6 x 10^10 Msun. We also constrained the GSMF at the highest-mass
end (Mst>~2 x 10^11 Msun) at z>=5. From their presence at 5=<z<6, and virtual
absence at higher redshifts, we can pinpoint quite precisely the moment of
appearance of the first most massive galaxies as taking place in the ~0.2 Gyr
of elapsed time between z~6 and z~5. Alternatively, if very massive galaxies
existed earlier in cosmic time, they should have been significantly
dust-obscured to lie beyond the detection limits of current, large-area, deep

Modeling atmospheric effects of the September 1859 Solar Flare
We have modeled atmospheric effects, especially ozone depletion, due to a
solar proton event which probably accompanied the extreme magnetic storm of 1-2
September 1859. We use an inferred proton fluence for this event as estimated
from nitrate levels in Greenland ice cores. We present results showing
production of odd nitrogen compounds and their impact on ozone. We also compute

Encoding the infrared excess (IRX) in the NUVrK color diagram for star-forming galaxies
We present an empirical method of assessing the star formation rate (SFR) of
star-forming galaxies based on their locations in the rest-frame color-color
diagram (NUV-r) vs (r-K). By using the Spitzer 24 micron sample in the COSMOS
field (~16400 galaxies with 0.2 < z < 1.3) and a local GALEX-SDSS-SWIRE sample
(~700 galaxies with z = <
L_IR / L_UV > can be described by a single vector, NRK, that combines the two
colors. The calibration between and NRK allows us to recover the IR
luminosity, L_IR, with an accuracy of ~0.21 dex for the COSMOS sample and ~0.27
dex for the local one. The SFRs derived with this method agree with the ones
based on the observed (UV+IR) luminosities and on the spectral energy
distribution fitting for the vast majority (~85 %) of the star-forming
population. Thanks to a library of model galaxy SEDs with realistic
prescriptions for the star formation history, we show that we need to include a
two-component dust model (i.e., birth clouds and diffuse ISM) and a full
distribution of galaxy inclinations in order to reproduce the behavior of the
stripes in the NUVrK diagram. In conclusion, the NRK method, based only
on rest-frame UV and optical colors available in most of the extragalactic
fields, offers a simple alternative of assessing the SFR of star-forming

Historical roots of Agile methods: where did “Agile thinking” come from?
The appearance of Agile methods has been the most noticeable change to software process thinking in the last fifteen years [16], but in fact many of the “Agile ideas” have been around since 70’s or even before. Many studies and reviews have been conducted about Agile methods which ascribe their emergence as a reaction against traditional methods. In this paper, we argue that although Agile methods are new as a whole, they have strong roots in the history of software engineering. In addition to the iterative and incremental approaches that have been in use since 1957 [21], people who criticised the traditional methods suggested alternative approaches which were actually Agile ideas such as the response to change, customer involvement, and working software over documentation. The authors of this paper believe that education about the history of Agile thinking will help to develop better understanding as well as promoting the use of Agile methods. We therefore present and discuss the reasons behind the development and introduction of Agile methods, as a reaction to traditional methods, as a result of people's experience, and in particular focusing on reusing ideas from histor
